  • The stage is set for the start of the English Test summer as the action kicks off with the Richards-Botham Trophy between England and the West Indies. There couldn't be a better venue to start the summer of Test cricket in England than Lord's with Trent Bridge in Nottingham and Edgbaston in Birmingham hosting the second and third Tests respectively.
Named in honour of legends Vivian Richards and Ian Botham the previous edition of the Richards-Botham Trophy which was also the first took place in the Caribbean. As a result of the West Indies winning that three-match series 1-0 they currently hold the trophy. Talking about legends England's James Anderson will bid farewell to international cricket after this Test marking the end of an era for one of the greatest fast bowlers in the game's history.
With 700 wickets to his name Anderson is perched at the top of the wicket-taker list for pacers and third in the list of all bowlers. With Stuart Broad hanging up his boots last summer and Anderson following suit now it is time for the next generation to take over and it is reflected in the squad composition. Matthew Potts just six Tests old and the duo of Dillon Pennington and Gus Atkinson find a place in the squad.
As has become a tradition England announced their playing XI a couple of days before the start of the Test. Atkinson has been picked ahead of Potts and Pennington joining James Anderson and Chris Woakes in the pace attack. On the batting front England have made some tough decisions dropping Jonny Bairstow and Ben Foakes with Jamie Smith set to debut and don the gloves. Ben Duckett Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope retain their places from the side that lost the Test series in India while Harry Brook who missed that series due to personal reasons is back in the mix.
Joe Root and Ben Stokes stand tall as the batting mainstays for England yet again with the latter having gotten quite a few overs under his belt while playing for Durham and might feature with the ball as consistently as he did before his knee troubles. On the other hand Kraigg Brathwaite and his men have set foot in England in their quest to retain the trophy.
As part of their preparations for the series the West Indies played a practice game against a County Select XI that ended in a draw. In the batting department only Kraigg Brathwaite was present the last time the Men from the Caribbean toured England for a Test series highlighting the inexperience in the lineup.
However Joshua Da Silva Alick Athanaze and Kirk Mckenzie impressed in the tour game and the time spent out in the middle will put them in good stead heading into the series. The West Indies think tank has a decision to make at the top of the order regarding Brathwaite's opening partner with Zachary McCaskie and Mikyle Louis being the two contenders. The other experienced name for the visitors is Jason Holder who has excelled for Worcestershire this season in Division 1 of the County Championship with a century and nine wickets from five games.
The seasoned all-rounder will have a pivotal role to play with both bat and ball in determining the West Indies' fortunes in the series. With Kemar Roach unavailable for the series due to a knee injury Alzarri Joseph will spearhead the pace attack. Jayden Seales Shamar Joseph and Jeremiah Louis are the other seam-bowling options Brathwaite will have at his disposal this tour. In the spin department there is a toss-up between Kevin Sinclair.
Gudakesh Motie but one feels that given his batting credentials Sinclair is likely to get the nod. It is set up nicely for what should be a cracker of a Test series and a fantastic curtain-raiser to the English summer. It was the perfect swansong for Stuart Broad against Australia last summer. Can England rally and give Anderson the perfect send-off or will the West Indies spoil the party?
