    Alright, so it has been about two years since I have watched this video. I wanted to offer some insight for anyone outside of the desert.
    This advice is solid. I have been trying to plant fruit trees since 2010, but every time I failed. That is until I watched this video. My trees have been going strong for about 1.5 years now. However, just know that if you are in the Midwest, you will not want to water as much as Shamus does. This will cause mold, or could drown your tree if you have heavy clay (like I do). For the last year, I have just let natural rain cycles do their thing and my trees are vibrant.
    Hope this helps.

      UPDATE: Crazy how time flies. It has now been 5 years since I watched this video. Trees are still going strong, we are just now getting our first yield of pears. We matched Shamus on his mulching methods and it paid off ten fold. MATCH HIS DIGGING METHODS VERBATIM! A 2x2 hole is labor intensive I know, we ended up cheating and buying an auger for our tractor. DO NOT SKIMP OR GET LAZY ON THIS! I am telling you, compromise elsewhere if you have to, break the task up over a longer period of time if you have to. The hole size, soil ratios and amendments are like the dream team.
      The soil around my trees are unlike anything our land has seen in decades if not centuries (pure speculation based on the heavy clay and rock). Other spots on our land were tested and are completely void of any nutrition (NPK) and is just compacted clay. The soil our trees are planted in is like an oasis. We did not fertilizer or do feedings like we should have, which was totally our fault.
      One piece of advice that can not be overstated is pollinators! We had no cross pollination going on. We planted an entire field of wild flowers and BOOM a massive yield of pears and peaches. Red clover is a nice field cover if you have the spare land.

    This is also why permaculturists plant a ground crop to suck up extra nutes and then the cover crop is mulched in before planting the intended plants.
    It ok to just play in the dirt a while....its natural😉
    Good lawd i cant wait to bring some of your trees home to the new farm!

    If you're preparing so far in advance how about building a compost in the pit. layer in your leaves and waste you can even through in fish heads and fun stuff like that if you are going to fill the whole hole in right away. In a few months time it will all be broken down into safe goodness.

    I learn a lot watching these. Thank you. It makes sense to me, and in fact I've had a dead tree look like it was planted root bound. Maybe the roots grew around a round hole surrounded by caliche clay. I'll start digging square holes.

    I think it's important to let people know in all your videos where this is taking place. For instance, I live in south AL on a ten acre wetland and would not be able to plant like this. For southern CA of course this is excellent advice but you need to explain that to your audience. Keep up the great job!

    Hi Shamus, Do you think any of these trees would live in California City, California? Our soil content is like hard clay and very alkaline. I think there was once a lake here. It gets very hot in summer, this year it got up to 119° f, and in the winter time it can get to freezing. My husband and I just bought a house here and the only tree on the property was a Chinese elm. We are both seniors and don't know what would survive out here. Were on a fixed income and would love to grow our own food. Thank you. Great video. I do think that since Jake is so strong, he should have been helping. Many hands make work light. Lol

    please keep in mindil that it is highly unlikely that the native soil is anything like the soil or growing medium that the trees is in now. So it probably doesn't matter weather is that mix you got or the native soil or a mix of both, if there's going to be any shock it's going to be the shock between the existing plant soil and whatever fhat us going into beit 100% native soil 50% native soil or 100% mix of non-native soil.

      I've never used it and my trees do great. May be a good idea to use such stuff but far from absolute necessity. Granted I have world class loam soil many meters deep.

      @@Mrbfgray you do right. most of this stuff are moneymaker and do so little. somebody makes a market for things nobody need. if your soil is clay you just need to add sand. it's all. mulching is useful if you planting a non-native tree.

    • @Mrbfgray
      @Mrbfgray Před 4 lety

      @@mortezap7596 Mulching is highly desirable for several reasons including reducing my water consumption by maybe 3 to 4X. I get truck loads of wood chips plus detritus from my big redwoods and so on. I have been using the mycorrhiza in recent months just to cover my bases.

    16:16 min in. That’s a new thought that goes on this list of extremist vegan thoughts. If you’re vegan that’s cool but plants like the nutrients they like. Plants like what they like.
