  • In this video, we have Jimmy and Alvaro troubleshoot a propeller vibration using the techniques in our first prop balancing video. Jimmy then fine tunes a prop for a Sport Copter.

I remember Alvaro from the AirGyro videos a while back. Nice to see him again and it's nice to see folks from different channels just getting together as a community. Unrelated question, what's going on with the Frankengyro?

Thanks for watching. The frankengyro is still here. We've been busy with other projects and the flight school portion.. we are planning on putting a 916 in her. We'll be putting some content up about frankengyro soon!

Jimmy nice to see you using the Smart Avionics PB4 balancer, as you may know unfortunately it is no longer available.
    A few comments!
Good to see that you’re checking blade pitch first, many don’t realise how important that is.
The difference between the angle that the PB4 tells you and where the actual imbalance is not because of gyroscopic precession. It is called the phase angle and is due primarily to damping in the support system.
You say that the rotors come from the manufacturer statically balanced, I’m sure you’ll find that most will dynamically balance them before shipment.
At about 22 minutes you counted the bolts in the direction of rotation but the PB4 counts the bolts (weight sites) in the opposite direction.
You don’t need to try to work out where to put the first trial weight. After your initial run to measure the imbalance just stick a weight on any bolt (counting in the opposite direction to rotation) and enter the value and position in the PB4, it will tell you after the second run how much and where to put the correct weight.
You say that the rotors come from the manufacturer statically balanced, I’m sure you’ll find that most will dynamically balance them before shipment.
I’m looking forward to see how you tackle the rotor balance.
    Mike

Thank you for addressing this, expect soon to see all your flying videos with bugger all stick shake. This is a topic rarely covered.

Thanks, guys. I like your mech. videos. I did this sort of thing on fighter jets in the Navy. I'm looking forward to the engine mount change video. Be safe.

If you think Dave’s Sportcopter sounds like a Honda…. It’s because it IS a Honda! 😜

I am curious to know what the price is to balance prop and rotor?

I think Jimmy charges $250 an hour.. that's if he's already in your neighborhood.

Engine mounts need to be replaced. Far too much movement
