  • Contemporary, rebellious, a combination of arts and history: this is Museum De Lakenhal. You are your own guide in this restored and modernised museum.
Museum De Lakenhal is the museum for arts and history of the city of Leiden. Like the city, we combine a classic look with a contemporary and rebellious character. The broad collection ranges from highlights of ancient art with Lucas van Leyden's Last Judgment and modern classics of De Stijl to artworks created by contemporary artists such as Claudy Jongstra and Atelier van Lieshout. The city's eventful past is also highlighted in the various collection presentations.
The 17th-century Laecken-Halle in which the museum is housed and our name refers to, has been carefully restored and modernised in recent years. The reopening in 2019 brought a transformation both outside and inside; with a renewed public approach and presentation. Old elements have found a new place and together form a new whole. The renewed building invites our visitors to explore the different facets of Leiden's art and history. And to let themselves be suprised by the many layers that can be uncovered.
