Russisch (Soviet) gevechtsvliegtuig schendt nederlands luchtruim, een verslag van de crash van een Russich gevechtsvliegtuig in Belgie op 4 juli 1989
Vanuit de Zulu hangar op de vliegbasis Soesterberg werd door het 32e Tactical Fighter Squadron van de Amerikanen (1954-1994) het Nederlandse luchtruim bewaakt met inzet van 2 QRA F15 vliegtuigen.
De QRA stijgt binnen enkele minuten op om een ongeïdentificeerd toestel te onderscheppen. Tegenwoordig wordt deze QRA taak door twee F35’s gedaan vanuit Nederland vanaf vliegbasis Volkel en Leeuwarden. De F35’s van de QRA worden begeleidt door het Air Operations Control Station (AOCS) in Nieuw Milligen. De QRA taak wordt op toerbeurt door de Belgische F16 collega’s uit Kleine-Brogel en Florennes uitgevoerd.
In de periode dat de QRA nog door de Amerikanen vanaf de vliegbasis Soesterberg werd uitgevoerd stort tijdens de laatste maanden van de Koude Oorlog op 4 juli 1989 een Russische MIG 23 gevechtsvliegtuig neer in Bellegem in Belgie.
Het toestel was om 9.14 uur voor een trainingsvlucht opgestegen van de luchtmachtbasis Kołobrzeg in Polen. Het kreeg al snel problemen met de motor. De piloot, kolonel Nikolai Skuridin, heeft het vliegtuig daarna met zijn schietstoel verlaten. De verwachting was dat het toestel zou neerstorten in zee. Dat gebeurde echter niet, de MiG heeft zelfstandig nog zo'n duizend kilometer afgelegd over Duitsland, Nederland en België.
Om 9.30uur werd het vijandelijk toestel voor het eerst waargenomen op de radar van de NAVO in Lüchow en op de radar van een AWACS vliegtuig. Twee Amerikaanse F-15's, die om 9.42 uur voor een onderscheppingsmissie waren opgestegen van de NAVO-vliegbasis Soesterberg, constateerden om 10.05 uur dat het om een onbemand gevechtsvliegtuig ging. Wegens de grote bevolkingsdichtheid onder het vliegtraject besloot de Nederlandse en Belgische legerleiding samen met de diverse ministers om het vliegtuig pas boven de Noordzee neer te halen.
Boven Bellegem, vlak voor Kortrijk, was de brandstof van de MiG echter op, waarop het toestel zich omstreeks 10.37 uur op de grens van Bellegem en Kooigem in een woning aan de rijksweg boorde. Een 19-jarige student informatica, Wim Delaere, kwam om het leven en de woning werd volledig verwoest.

From the Zulu hangar at Soesterberg air base, the American 32nd Tactical Fighter Squadron (1954-1994) monitored the Dutch airspace using 2 QRA F15 aircraft.
The QRA takes off within minutes to intercept an unidentified aircraft. Nowadays, this QRA task is carried out by two F 35s from the Netherlands from Volkel air base and Leeuwarden. The QRA F35s are guided by the Air Operations Control Station (AOCS) in Nieuw Milligen. The QRA task is carried out in turn by the Belgian F16 colleagues from Kleine-Brogel and Florennes.

The aircraft had taken off from Kołobrzeg air base in Poland at 9:14 am for a training flight. It soon developed problems with the engine. The pilot, Colonel Nikolai Skuridin, then left the plane with his ejection seat. It was expected that the plane would crash into the sea. However, that did not happen, the MiG independently traveled about a thousand kilometers across Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.
At 9:30 am the enemy aircraft was first sighted on NATO radar in Lüchow and on the radar of an AWACS aircraft. Two American F-15s, which had taken off from NATO's Soesterberg air base at 9:42 a.m. on an interception mission, determined at 10:05 a.m. that they were an unmanned fighter aircraft. Due to the high population density along the flight path, the Dutch and Belgian army leadership, together with various ministers, decided to only shoot down the plane above the North Sea.
However, above Bellegem, just before Kortrijk, the MiG ran out of fuel, and the aircraft crashed into a house on the highway at around 10:37 am on the border of Bellegem and Kooigem. A 19-year-old computer science student, Wim Delaere, was killed and the house was completely destroyed.
