  • 'Tyne Stories' filmed during Winter 2010, documents stories from river pilot's, boat builders tugboatmen and foyboatmen talking about how working on the river has shaped their lives. Highlighted is the work of the Volunteer Life Brigade, Missions to Seafarers and North East Maritime Trust preserving maritime history in South Shields.

    I thoughly enjoyed that video, thanks for making it. I never worked on the river but my family did, my ancestors being Keelmen. I remember a lot of the shops and tugs mentioned.

    Oh.. I remember those tugs so well.. and the little boat that sculled them back and forth.. I used to scull across the river myself.. my father was thrown in the Tyne, from the tug he was on.. as the ropes gave way.. but he survived..
    Oh the Tyne River, has such a history..

    a poem i wrote i stand on the banks of the river tyne reminicing about when it was in its prime shipyards coal heavy industry galore all around and down the busy shore i remember when i was young ships bearthed three and four deep now when i see the tyne all i can do is weep i remember the coal being loaded by the thousands of tons a trimmers work was never done yes its true its the cleanest the tyne has ever been even salmon have been seen but ask any one what they remember best about the tyne and they will all reply when it was in its prime
