      Stamina management is a shit mechanic that forces you to play defensive and drag out fights. Either give me a dodge with a short cooldown that I can manage and supplement with other abilities or let me dodge as many times as I want like Hades and build the game around that. I will say that the monetization is what keeps me from trying MMOs again. I hate game companies selling "convenience" features, selling a solution to a problem they have caused. While MMOs are the most prominent, it also applies to XP boosts to skip long grinds in single player games, like Shadow of War or the recent Assassin's Creed. I stopped buying those games because of that monetization.

    • @PresentDark
      @PresentDark Před rokem +10

      Yup and always so many people defending those practices... "You only pay for convienience" "You only pay to skip some grind" but if game was not designed with having those items in Item shop in mind then they would never make it so grindy. Like you said, they make prolems themselves on purpose (for example astronomical exp requirements to level up) and sell solutions to them for $$ (exp booster, for only 9.99$ a week you can earn x10 experience points).

      One other seriously important thing to point out: MMO's these days are coming out with almost no roadmap or guidelines it wants to follow. For example when Vanilla WoW was rushed out the door, Burning Crusade was just around 1/2 years behind, After that Wrath was up and coming. This got people hyped into the atmosphere of playing the game becuase it almost felt like an endless content machine. People had the same things to say in Legion. People caught with the content in Legion and another patch dropped, extending that game time exponentially (I didnt play this so any peeps who played legion can correct me :P)
      The microtransactions bug me immensely but I assume everyone's already in agreement they suck.

    If the Game gives you premium currency just for Daily login my alarm bells start ringing very loudly. For me that means only one of two things. There's also another alternative to level scaling vs. zone scaling - where the zone generally has a difficulty/level for most of the mobs, while also having areas or enemies that are particularly difficult. If done well, this keeps the lower-difficulty zones alive even for stronger players, meshes well with party play (difficult mobs could be taken down by a single strong player or a group of weaker players) and honestly feels a _lot_ more realistic and immersive. And it gives you the feeling that you should always be on your toes, because you can always encounter more than you're ready for. Of course, this works best with level-less games (Ultima Online often uses this to great effect), but some kinds of level systems also work fine for this (e.g. not the kind where anything 3 levels above you is unkillable and 3 levels below you is worthless :D ). Not to mention the possibility of random strangers helping people who got way over their heads out of a thick spot, though unfortunately that kind of ad-hoc multiplayer almost disappeared from MMOs.

    Sincerely, level scaling helps making every zone in the game still be worth returning to if it's done right, and makes it so they're not trivial.
    And it helps even more, if the game have multiple different paths and maps with their own level ranges.
    Sadly, WoW kinda failed about this for one reason:
    At least when I last played WoW years ago, if your character passed the level scaling range, your character doesn't receive downscale to the level max range, and monsters will be upscaled only up to the maximum level of the range, so if you explore lower leveled maps, it will be more dull than exploring them during their level range.
    And WoW has one huge world that could make use of made right level scaling, even more for explorer players. Like, the base game continent itself is HUGE.

    • @nakano15
      @nakano15 Před rokem

      @@바보Queen I have to add an extra point regarding this:
      Simply adding level scaling to a zone wont exactly make it more worthy returning to.
      If the zones themselves doesn't have something worth visiting again once the player has cleared all content from it and got their character stronger, then the zone will still turn obsolete because it has nothing else to offer, which is also a issue.
      Guild Wars 2 partially solved that issue with some maps having world bosses, where even people at the end game participates for some loot. But on other maps, there's simply not much reason to return, unless you liked to do some specific event, like the wars on Harathi Hinterlands.

    Phantasy Star Online 2 has the option to pay for more inventory space.
    In PSO2 base you really did need it, playing without extra space was cumbersome because you only get 30 slots by default and 1-3 of those are taken up by your outfit, 1-4 of those are taken up by your weapons and weapon camos, 5 slots taken up by armor, so that's already around 1/3 of your usable slots and the rest are gonna' be taken up really quickly, especially if you haven't also purchased Material Storage for stuff like Grinders and ingredients.
    Thankfully, in NGS this was massively improved. You can still buy inventory, but your default is now 100 slots, you have 100 slots of temporary storage in case you go over that, you can access all of your storages at any time, and your outfit no longer takes up inventory space. I'm super glad this change was made. Even if your inventory fills up faster, it's now way more manageable.
    There's auto-sell now too which helps, but it is mostly a paid feature. Just like most stuff in PSO2 you can still save enough Star Gems, the semi-premium currency, to purchase a limited-time auto sell but it's really not super necessary unless you know you're gonna' be doing some hardcore grinding.

    Honestly, it sounds like it's just going to be the same schtick we always get from Korean games recently. It'll be really good at the start, then die out when the game gets top heavy and people demand excessive gear levels for trivial content. Or it'll randomly ban players because their anticheat systems tend to be pretty bad like Blade and Soul had a pretty nasty issue with theirs that would sometimes not even let an antivirus be turned on to be able to play in some cases. Another major issue with these games is, well, huge hype leads to full servers, then hype ends, 90% of population leaves, then they don't do server merges, so the game feels dead no matter what level you are. Kinda like Lost Ark right now, which may not have leveled zones so to speak, but zones are story based, so it feels dead and could actually be dead since no server is ever 'busy' and most posts about server population hubs are from last year when there was 200k players and now there's 50-60k players and slowly dropping more and more.

    I prefer level scaling personally. It's more efficient on the content. Games with fixed levels keep having the problem where 80 to 90% of the zones become worthless and then everyone spends all their time in 1 or 2 zones. Creates a situation where most of the dev time is spent on things no one plays, but players overplay content that is only a small fraction of the dev time invested.
    I think it mostly comes down to the scaling algorithm ( see Diablo 4) on the bad feeling. Having too much of the player power in stats and just broadly scaling it, never works out well. Leveling up should grant you more mechanics, which then you have to master, and in turn grants power. You scaled down to the monster, but you became better as a player and can now trivialize content.

There is sure to be rare drops that you can farm afk from low level mobs, and do you really want to do that manually? I remember what it was like to mindlessly kill low level trash for weeks on end to get a rare drop and feeling the fraustration of seeing others just botting it. This is a reasonable approach to making the game fair to all players. It will also be nice to see so many characters out in the world doing things, even if they are afk auto batteling. In theory its good so we will have to wait and see as its not been well tested yet.

  • @benballerdidthechain9095

    What are your expectations regarding the cost of running MMOs? Do you consider them to be cheap compared to other games like League of Legends and Valorant, which can generate revenue through esports and sponsorships?
    The sustainability of MMO business models is questionable for several reasons:
    To keep the player base engaged, MMOs require regular content updates. Without new content every few months, players tend to become bored and lose interest in the game. This means developers have to continuously expand the game. In contrast, offline/online AAA games typically require minimal post-launch development, resulting in lower costs compared to MMOs. MMOs, on the other hand, need to invest more in developing new mechanics and classes, which is considerably more expensive. Developers themselves are costly resources.
    In the gaming industry, it has become acceptable for players to spend small amounts of money on cosmetic items like skins. However, when it comes to purchasing power or advantages in the game, some people are critical. This distinction is puzzling because both types of spending inherently support the developers. Although some players take this to the extreme, it ultimately comes down to personal spending habits. Blaming the game for it is unjustified.
    Let me share my personal experience to illustrate this. I have been playing MMOs for over 15 years, and the one I disliked the most was MapleStory. Recently, Lost Ark helped me realize the importance of a "pity system" when spending money. Therefore, having a fair system in place is crucial.
    If you choose to play MMOs completely for free, you should still have access to all end-game content by investing your time. As long as this principle is upheld, there should be no room for complaints. If essential content is locked behind paywalls, then there is a problem. It's important to have reasonable expectations when playing games for free.
    If you cannot come to terms with these realities, MMOs may not be suitable for you. Perhaps AAA MMOs like Elden Ring might be more fitting, but online MMOs are designed to reflect a real economy, which necessitates these elements.
