This was the most fitting ending for the quintessential Doctor Who companion. My first memory of Sarah Jane Smith was watching 'The Ark in Space'. My Mum & Dad bought it for me for Christmas, and it was the very first Doctor Who I ever watched. Immediately, I fell in love with the show and that was largely to down to her and her legendary dynamic with my personal favourite Doctor, Tom Baker. I had also watched The Sarah Jane Adventures religiously every autumn that it was broadcast on CBBC; quite possibly the best show on CBBC. Hearing about Elisabeth Sladen’s death really affected me when I first heard the news. A character that I really adored, a part of my childhood, was suddenly gone. Elisabeth Sladen had so much more to give as Sarah Jane, and if she was still around with us today, not only would The Sarah Jane Adventures still be continuing to this day, she would've most likely have been in the 50th Anniversary special and had a few good adventures with the Twelfth and Thirteenth Doctors. It’s heartbreaking that Sladen never got to continue that journey with Sarah Jane as she meant a lot to so many people. She’s the reason why many kids grew up to be fans of Doctor Who. It was such a great part of my childhood that I will forever cherish. She will never be forgotten and I genuinely hope more people and generations will discover Sarah Jane and grow to love her in the same way we did as children. #FarewellSarahJane

Only managed to bring myself to watch this today. It's been 11, nearly 12 years since she passed, and I've held off watching the SJA series 5, and then this, because then it really would be the end of the story. Sarah Jane was a role model to me when I was growing up, watching her adventures with the Doctor on PBS. She was still a role model all through SJA when I watched it in my late 20s/early 30s. Elisabeth Sladen brought such life to Sarah Jane that I was afraid of ever meeting her at a convention, even though I desperately wanted to (and never got the chance), because I knew I'd be that weird lady who, despite being good with other actors and separating actors from roles, would just be, "Oh my gosh, you're Sarah Jane Smith. Did you know you're Sarah Jane Smith?" and entirely tongue-tied. But, as she said years ago, "Everything has its time and everything ends". So today, a week before Christmas, I decided I needed to see the end. And I'm still crying as I type. This was the goodbye Sarah Jane deserved, with all her friends celebrating how wonderful she was. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this (not that you'll ever see this comment). Thank you all so much for honoring Elisabeth Sladen and Sarah Jane this way.

I was an extra in Sarah Jane Adventures twice - firstly in April 2008 and then again in April 2010. And both times at Cardiff High School in Cardiff, where they filmed the school scenes. The first time round it was the episode from series two with the clown. Then the second time round, it was the 'Nightmare Man' one. Anyway, I met Elisabeth Sladen during the filming of 'Nightmare Man'. Before we filmed the scene where we all ran outside with our A-Level results, which took three hours to film by the way, they had a coffee machine on a crew table outside the school. I think I was going to get a drink before we filmed the scene and Elisabeth was by the table. She was struggling with the coffee machine, so I showed her how to use it even though I can't stand coffee. We talked for a bit before we had to go to our positions ready for filming the scene.
Then inbetween one of the takes, a number of us were sat on some sofas inside near the school entrance. Elisabeth sat with us and spoke to every single one of us. She thanked me again for showing her how to use the coffee machine and she asked us where we were from, how long we'd been doing supporting artist work and what time we left for Cardiff that morning (as I'm from Swansea, which is about an hour away). We were all so deep in conversation that we got shushed by one of the crew as they were about to go for a take. Even including Elisabeth herself! She was very friendly and down-to-earth. No pretentiousness or arrogance whatsoever.
That's why her death came as a huge shock to me. It was so soon after her diagnosis and having met her and been in her programme twice! :(

@@citrinedragonfly - It's a pleasure. I'm happy to be able to share it. Kathleen, she really was special and more. I remember being struck by how real she was. When we were chatting, it was as though we were two old friends catching up and having a gossip rather than the main actress of a programme talking to an extra she'd met just seconds earlier. As I said, there was no pretentiousness about her. And it's clear that Tommy Knight, Daniel Anthony and Anjli Mohindra thought the world of her. I worked with those three a lot more because I was 18 at the time, so I was playing a sixth-form pupil. I appeared on screen a couple of times during the scene with Luke's surprise party, which again took hours to film. In the final edit which was broadcast, the song playing at the party was 'Untouchable' by Girls Aloud, but in real life we were actually dancing to 'I Gotta Feeling' by Black Eyed Peas. They had to play it about 40 times for takes, camera angle changes, etc., so by the end of the day I became sick of that song! Which is why when the episode went out, I was shocked to hear 'Untouchable'. But the best were the bits when Tommy, Daniel and Anjli had dialogue. In those instances, we had to dance in silence, so after the director would go "action!", we'd just be there dancing in silence while Tommy and Daniel were in the corner filming the part of the scene where Luke and Clyde are talking about who's idea the party was and how cool Rani is. And this again was done many times for takes and camera angles. It was so funny and many of us said that it was like being at a silent disco. :')

And Clyde and Rani would be there, and maybe Sky as well. And if we need a "supervising adult", why not have Alan and Maria move back? Obviously their old home wouldn't be available, but Number 13 looks a big enough house.

    Before David Tennant regenerated in 'The End of Time: Part 2' 10 years ago, Russell T. Davies had the opportunity to have his FINAL say on the show. To say what meant the most to him. And the last lines of dialogue of the Russell T. Davies era are;
"This song is ending, but the story never ends."
    "I don't want to go"
The last line is heart-breaking, but the one before?...I don't think it was until this touching tribute that I TRULY understand what Russell meant by that.
Because the world of 'Doctor Who' is a massive, complex, insane family. A family that's always growing and its legacy is passed on all through our lives.
And even though Elisabeth Sladen may be gone, her legacy and her story NEVER ends.

But everything about Sarah Jane made me curious about her adventures with HER Doctor (or I guess I should say Doctors) and then the other companions I wasn't aware of and obviously I couldn't just jump into Pertwee's final season. I had to start from the beginning. But just starting from Pertwee's first season isn't enough. How did he become the Doctor? And how did the Doctor before become the Doctor? And before I knew it I was watching "An Unearthly Child".

I have always loved Martha too. I just don't understand her unpopularity. And beautifully acted. Saved the world three times over, from The Master, the Daleks and not using the Osterhagen key. Mickey...... well, my problem with him was the first episode, Rose. He was just an awful character and so badly acted. And the special effects for plastic Mickey were terrible. All of these put together made me dislike the character immediately. But to Noel Clarke's credit he's did say in an interview in DWM that when he took on the part he didn't think Doctor Who would have taken off like it did and he thought he would only be in that one episode so he didn't take it too seriously. He realised his mistake, apologised to the producers and went on to make Mickey so much more than "the robot dog". I'm glad Martha and him got together but wonder what happened to her engagement to that dishy doctor! And I wonder if there's a reason they called their kid August. Any ideas?

Sarah Jane is the First Lady of space...... I think about her at times as I think about my own mother both departed just months apart.....she’s with my doctor now traveling in space and time.

I remember when I found out about Elizabeth dying. I was in my local shop getting some afterschool sweets to go home and to watch the season finale of Sarah jane adventures. I was waiting in line to pay when I saw the newspaper stand. I saw them mentioned Sarah jane then I saw "Elizabeth Salden Sarah Jane Adventures star dies at 60" I remember leaving the line and standing staring at the page reading the article. I'll never forget the feeling that I just lost a part of myself.

    Alternative:
“As Clyde, Luke and Rani left, they failed to notice a figure still standing afar from the church. The figure waited until the car had driven off and made its way inside the churchyard.
The Doctor stopped halfway amongst the gravestones thinking of what she should say. A billion things ran with such speed through her Time Lady mind. with it then made up she continued walking past all the others. She did not need to look for Sarah Jane’s final resting place. She felt drawn to it as if being called.
Both her hearts beat faster than they ever had before. The Doctor had travelled to the furthest reaches of reality and went up against some of the most unspeakable evils both ever possible and impossible. At those times her hearts indeed beat fast. But not as fast as they were beating then in that moment. The pain felt worse more than every regeneration she ever went through.
Stopping at Sarah Jane’s grave she read the epitaph. The tears seemed endless as they poured down The Doctor’s flustered cheeks. She did not however cry aloud, She instead stood there and silently reminisced about all the trials and challenges their journey together threw at them.
With a sniff and a clear of the throat she garnered what composure she could. Wiping the tears away with the back of her hand she then put the same hand gently on the stone and said “Goodbye... My Sarah-Jane”. And with that, The Doctor turned around and made her way back to the Tardis.
Though the sun shone brightly that day. Not one bird sang, nor did wind blow. It was as if they were also silently in mourning for one of Earth’s greatest protectors.
Complete silence filled the air until it was suddenly broken by what could be said was Sarah-Jane’s favourite sound. The roar of the Tardis engines. They seemed to be louder than normal as if even the Tardis was saying it’s goodbyes. It dematerialised and the day returned to it’s sunny and silent afternoon.”

When I first started watching the sarah jane adventures i had no idea that Doctor Who existed or that this was a spin off, for me she was just Sarah Jane Smith, not a companion of the doctor, she was the woman who I would wait for in the episodes to come and save the day, when she came on screen, I could sigh with relief because she would make it alright, I only found out years later when i started watching doctor who, the slitheen episode made me google the sarah jane adventures and I was shocked! I have been a part of Doctor Who fandom since I was a child and i didn't even know it she was sort of like my first doctor. I have beautiful memories watching this show with my brother, i remember being scared, i remember being excited, I remember waiting everyday for it to come on, i rememeber having a crush on luke and I remember wishing I had the sonic lipstick, I remember loving the fact that there was an Indian girl , just like me, running around, Rani was my favourite, always, and I remember sarah jane smith, always there , brave and smart and beautiful and oh so kind, I remember loving Sarah Jane Smith.

This is the best thing Russel ever wrote. When he’s doing sci fi and he’s got no limits, he’s just out of control. That’s when we get stuff like the Doctor being revived by faith and the Master being a lightning fueled skeletor. But when Russel is writing small, character driven stuff? That’s what he’s best at. That’s what he’ll always be remembered for. The Sarah Jane Adventures weren’t only his best work in the Doctor Who universe, they were his best work period.

Sometime before Elisabeth's passing, my mum saw her a few times at our local tranquility beauty salon in Ealing. She didn't want to disturb her because she noticed that Elisabeth was looking "pale", and had no idea - like us all fans - that she was suffering from cancer. When my mum first told me, she wasn't aware that I was such a die-hard fan of Sarah Jane Smith. Imagine, what happened later:
Everyone was gone. Everything was quiet. The silence was cut with a familiar whir. There was no one to feel the air moving. And then, there it was. That big, blue box. The doors opened, and out peered a woman in a long, flowing coat. She looked around to make sure no one saw her. After making sure the coast was clear, she stepped out, soniced open the door to the house, and walked in towards the memorial laid out. Photos of Sarah Jane with her friends and family. In some of them, there was a man with curly hair and a toothy grin. The Doctor chuckled.
"I looked terrible in that picture."
She placed something on the memorial, a key. One of her keys to the Tardis.
"I doubt anyone will steal it. I wanted it to be left here."
    The Doctor stood there awkwardly.
"I regenerated again. Twice. I'm a girl now, that's fun. Met some new friends, you would've liked them."
She started to choke up, and forced a sad smile.
"I'm sorry I couldn't arrive sooner, but... I really hate goodbyes. I really hate endings. But everything has to end, doesn't it? Even the Doctor and Sarah Jane."
She felt a tear fall down her cheek, and raised her hand to wipe it away.
    "A tear, Doctor?"
The Doctor noticed someone in the corner of her eye, but didn't turn to see. She couldn't handle seeing her, not even one last time.
    "Don't cry. While there's life..."
She remembered saying that to her, back when she was still an old man. That sentence was never finished.
"...there's hope. I'm still with you. You're still here, and you'll never forget me."
The Doctor blinked, and turned. She could've sworn she saw her, her Sarah Jane, for a split second. But it was just her, alone. She thought about visiting Luke, Clyde, and Rani, but decided against it, and left the house, making sure to lock the door behind her. With a snap of her fingers, the Tardis opened.
"It's time we left, don't you think?"
    Beeping was heard inside.
    "No, I'm fine."
The Doctor walked inside and shut the doors. With a whirring sound, the Tardis disappeared, and again everything was quiet.
