Heartbreak: Dream Engine Fails Instantly Leaving Us Speechless!

  • This is painful to watch. We helped Daiki build his dream 2.2 liter SR20 engine for his D1 Lights car only for the engine to blow up on the first round. While we aren't 100% sure why it failed we believe we found the issue after looking at the wiring harness.

You know Sam and May are going to be great parents by how they look after Daiki. I'm sure they are already great parents but as a parent with a child who is 17 and in college, you want to help make their goals and dreams come true. The fact they do this for Daiki, just speaks volumes to me. For not just being good employers, friends, but certainly will corelate to parneting as well. Yugo will be albe to follow his goals/dreams and have the full support and help of his folks. (and hopefully Daiki)

It’s also worth investigating the injectors (unsure if you put new ones in with the latest build.) Sometimes if the injector is clogged or for some reason the jets are not producing the correct spray pattern, you can have improper atomisation, lean spots and hence detonation… Injectors with these sort of problems can and will produce the exact symptoms you’re experiencing.
Good luck with the rebuild! Daiki will be up and running again in no time.

U know that in Sweden, where we had a few good high HP SR's we usually machine the head where the valve meets the head, to prevent detonations like this? Its not very common on SR's but i can assure u that machining off those "straight" edges and make them perfectly round makes a huge difference! Not recommended on SR's running 300-400hp tho, as it will lower ur compression a bit too much running stock-sized rods and pistons.

Improper ignition curve, If you are lucky, your detonation will be caused not by auto-ignition from a hot spot in the combustion chamber, but by an ignition curve that provides too much base ignition advance. If this is the case, a simple reduction in base timing will cause the knock to stop. In most cases, however, it will be the disconnection of vacuum advance that will have caused this condition in the first place. This scenario involves an enthusiastic newbie who disables vacuum advance, then advances the base timing to compensate. The whole reason for vacuum advance on a stock engine is to provide enough lead time under light throttle conditions when the atmosphere behind the throttle plate is thin; the engine requires that extra lead time for cylinder pressure to build prior to the power stroke.
    ie tuners fault

7:10 Doesn't the ECU have fault detection? You could on many brands add fault detection to sensors. Like no continuity is a big one. Or the opposite if the sensor reads over value aka shorted.
If the ECU supports these functions, i recommend enabling it.

Sadly it would be very hard to do with ignition. Its basically just sending a signal to fire. It's not looking for specific voltage as you want as powerful spark as you can get. It's possible to setup a knock sensor that may have helped. But the old obd1 engines dont really have it. Still dont know if it would show in this case.

Well guess who put the engine in it. ! That happens to all his cars. Time to go to some one with way more experience if everything Sam touches never lastes 🤷🏽‍♂️

As above i would think it would of been a fuel issue or wiring to injectors or some kind of starvation issue that would make it detonate

Machine shop, new piston & wiring harness. Slap it together and add lots of boost! No biggie, could have been so much worse!

With that much detonation I wouldn’t risk running those rod bearings. They might look good but they can lose their shape so then u run risk of spinning a bearing. For that sake of $100-$150 bearings is it worth risking

please make sure the rods are still straight, round and in spec, crank isn't cracked etc. that level of detonation can destroy all of it!

Sad that people thought Roberto was a clown from detonation causing a bearing to spin. I know it is a diffrent situation. But in both cases the pressure will cause wear and a bearing will spin.

2 things . If the coils were randomly firing yes you would get knock bur Jesus you would have some huge intake back fires and some huge backfires when timing is retarded.
Also . If the tuner setup closed loop knock control you would realise the knock sensor isn’t working . If closed loop knock control wasn’t setup. The knock sensor was doing nothing anyway
