    The term beginner can be difficult, I have found. Someone completely new to Whisky, but who has a very adventurous palate for lots of different foods, wine, and beer can jump into challenging Whisky. Myself I started with Bourbon, and by the time I fell down the malt Whisky rabbit hole was drinking mostly cask strength. This coupled with a lot of research on WhiskyTube had me in adventurous Scotch right away. Great list. Cheers

    I've noticed I tend to like whiskies made with worm tub condensers... often described as meaty, funky or a bit sulfurous. Love the Craigellachie, Springbank, Edradour, Talisker, Mortlach, Speyburn, Oban and a few others. There are less than 2 dozen now that use them.

    Loved this title and theme as soon as I saw it! Totally correct with the concept! I had Springbank's Kilkerran and Longrow (gifted to me by a friend) and they are indeed dirty! Funk makes 'em dirty! I pick up a yeasty note with Bruichladdich and the Springbank lines I have tried. Maybe that is the farmy note? And appealing to experienced whiskey lovers. I LOVE Glen Scotia 12! It's one of my fave single malts. Loch Lomond is an excellent distillery under the radar. Your channel is an ideal whiskey channel, in my opinion. On point across all criteria.

    I could add
    *BenRiach 16* (old bottling from 10 years ago). This is really Springbank style.
    *Ardmore 20* It's dirty with loads of copper pipe smells and flavours.
    *Bruichladdich Octomore x.1* Particularly, the 07.1 was amazing. Dirty engine oil and burnt electric cables, with coal tar soap.

    If you want musty, dunnage warehouse and most definitely dirty, get your hands on an Edradour. Try a cask strength one, but if you can't get hold of that, then the 12YO Caledonia is everything you want from a real dirty sherried bomb. The standard 10 at 40% almost makes the grade but is perhaps a little too low on the ABV scale to really achieve that merit.
    Love the rest of you r list and as I have commented many times before on your channel, that Glen Scotia 8 is a real dirty little dram which I love and was close to being my whisky of the year last year. Another dirty challenger also from Campbeltown is the Kilkerran 8 Cask Strength.

    Great list. Edradour and Glenturret would feature on my list, but I am sure you would list them as the dirty sherry matured/finished whiskies. Although Edradour has bourbon cask matured cask strength bottles, which are pretty awesome themselves.
    Also Loch Dhu black, not a good whisky, but definitely a dirty one. In fact, it is really dirty.
    Speaking of weird, dirty whiskies, I would name a lesser known Bruichladdich. The "Fishky". Single cask sherry and ex-herring cask finished. Yeah, I said ex-herring cask. Dirty whisky for me are basically created when new makes go deep into the feints (aka tails), in other words when the lower cut point is significantly lower than usual.
    Hence Edradour should definitely be on your list, Geoff.

    It's hard to articulate 'dirty whisky' but I think we kind of know what you mean. Here's the thing, Springbank are touted but I really think you should go back to that. I don't think they are any more. The 12 is but that's just because of the strength. The 10 is a very well balanced dram and not 'dirty' at all. I'll add that to all Campbelltown whisky. Talisker 10 is easily as dirty. Here's a dirty one and it's a complete stink bomb which I like - Croftengea. Complete farmyard/ cow pat nose and flavour. It's owned by Loch Lomond and used in their blends. The indi bottles always produce. WT

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  Před rokem +1

      Yeah I agree the SB12 is dirtier than the 10. It's not particularly dirty, but it's got a farmy element that goes in that direction for me. While it's famous for being dirty, it doesn't compare to stuff like Ben Nevis, for example, which is off-the-charts dirty. Yeah I've had Croftengea. Not just owned by Loch Lomond... it's from the LL distillery. I think they've got roughly 8000 brands on the go at this point. Good stuff! 🥃

      @@Gwhisky Talking of Ben Nevis, I've just opened an independent one I've been sitting on. It was bottled by the now defunct 'Exclusive Malts' range and is a 20 year cask strength (51.9%) refill sherry hogshead bottled in 2017. 242 bottles. Despite the very obvious sherry profile the distillery character is also present.
      The official 10 year cask strength (1st batch) was also a complete stunner. I don't think they're likely to repeat a bottling like that again.

    Nice list Geoff. It's so interesting that we all interpret "dirty" differently. For me it means sulfur, flinty, or a certain level (or quality) of peat that fights the rest of the whisky's profile. A bit rough or rugged in some odd ways I suppose which you mention also. Benromach 10 would be at the front of my list as it is flinty, sulfury and has a level of peat that fights the rest of the whisky IMO. Craigellachie 13 also sulfur and flint. Loch Lomond 12 and 18 also to some degree but mostly because of the industrial oil qualities, but Springbank 10 wouldn't be on my dirty list. Springbank 10 to me is more of a citrus bomb than a dirty whisky with very subtle and well integrated peat.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  Před rokem +2

      Flint and sulfur could definitely be added to the definition of dirty. I summed it up as anything that doesn't come off as polished or engineered, so while your descriptors fit that perfectly, I guess I just use the term to cast a wider net than you. Cheers! 🥃
