Strasburg Railroad 90 & 89: The 60th Anniversary of Steam - Steam Strikes Back

  • The Strasburg Railroad is a staple of modern American Tourist Railroading, running daily steam operations since 1960. The year 2020 marks the anniversary of steam-powered tourist trains and in celebration of this milestone, the railroad held four photo specials. Strasburg Railroad 90 would be the star of the show, given her long-time residence at the Strasburg Railroad. She would be returned to the paint scheme she wore when she returned to service in 1967, with whitewalls, white pinstripes, gold highlights, and the famous "Egg Logo." Also along for the ride, was Canadian National 89, another long-time resident of the Strasburg Railroad, although not as long as 90. From sunrise to sunset, 90 & 89 took turns pulling both freight and passenger consists, putting on a great show for all photographers.
    Strasburg 90 is the largest, youngest, and most powerful among Strasburg’s fleet and one of the original Strasburg Engines. She was built in 1924 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and is a one of a kind locomotive. The 96 year old 2-10-0 decapod began her service hauling Sugar Beet Trains and by the 1950s, 90 only saw occasional use. She was then retired in 1967, but given new life by the Strasburg Railroad when they purchased her 1967. She has run ever since, becoming a favorite to train enthusiasts, crews, and photographers alike.
    Canadian National 89 is an 2-6-0 Mogul, classed as an E-10-a by the Canadian National. She was originally built in February 1910 by the Canadian Locomotive Company for the Grand Trunk Railway as number 1009. In 1919 it was renumbered 911. In 1923, the Grand Trunk was merged into the Canadian National Railway (CN) with 911 being one of the thousands of locomotives working for this new railroad. In 1951, 911 was renumbered 89. In 1965, she was sold to the Green Mountain Railroad and was then sold in 1972 to the Strasburg Railroad, where she operates today.

      Lol. One funny thing i think worth adding on was how they were blowing the whistle when moving around the yard at 5am: They barely blew it so all i really heard was a little bit of steam shoot out and the weakest/faintest noise of a whistle

    WOW! They even repainted #90 to how she looked from when she first came to the railroad in May of 1967. Although, she no longer has her smokebox extension & rear sand dome but hey; it is what it is. Now all they need to do is repaint the coaches to how they looked during the 70's & 80's.

    • @TrainChamber
      @TrainChamber  Před 3 lety

      She won't remain in that paint for long, it was all done with decals and stickers. I would've been cool to see 90 in the original GW look with he smokebox and other dome but I like the current look better
