- The dynamic Minister Louis Farrakhan, national spokesman for the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, leader of the Nation of Islam, is the subject of this Black Journal profile, entitled "Minister for Black Souls." (The Nation of Islam is a religious movement whose adherents are sometimes referred to as Black Muslims.)
The episode features an interview with the minister conducted by host Tony Brown, and portions of an address he made to a graduating class at Brooklyn's Boys High School. Black Journal also follows the charismatic leader as he walks near his Mosque in Harlem, talking to people, reaffirming their blackness, instilling greater brotherhood, warning them of the traps set by the white man, and stressing self-help and self-sufficiency. "Why should we get our own food, Brother?" he asks the clustered crowds.
"You know that the white man doesn't love us, and he's got all the stores and selling us the worst meat," he says, furnishing the answer. Minister Farrakhan also defines the philosophy of the Nation of Islam for Black Journal. He notes that it is basic to the needs of the black man - "Freedom, justice and equality.

Yeah, but the people are in way worse shape than in 1971. The welfare system incentivized single Motherhood and took the Father out of the Home. Then what is known as "Black Culture" came in and destroyed every Black community in the USA. You don't have a chance when the culture worships gangsters and criminals and speaking clearly is "Trying to act White". In 1971 Black people were coming to the forefront in Entertainment, sports , and were a huge part of the overall 1970's culture. men and women dressed sharp and went to all kinds of events. We were all Americans working together. In a country that is the most free and welcoming on earth, with 95% of the people going about their lives and not caring what a person's race was. A huge change happened that made people ignore Oprah and Obama , and rather blame White people for the failure of Blacks when compared to other races. It's 100% the culture.

During this time in 1971, I was an 8 year old Muslim child attending the University of Islam on 56th Street and Broadway in Los Angeles. I was attending a graduating class of the older Muslim boys. Back then, the boys went to school from 8am to noon and the girls went in the afternoon. I remember in those days Minister Farrakhan would sometimes visit our Muslim Mosque No. 27 and he was like Royalty. In those days the Muslims taught us that Malcolm X was an evil traitor and deserved what he got. I grew up believing this. I know better now and I consider Malcolm my spiritual father and though I’m no longer a Muslim, the memories of being a Muslim child are still in my heart
