    Wow Thing 1 is a determined bird. Good that he can flight a bit. Your pigeon feed is great. Is it for all year round or better when training?
    Thanks

      @RFRP  Před 3 lety +3

      Yes, He is determined!! Glad I saved him! This feed mix is mostly for my Breeders. The young birds will get the same but I will lighten it with barley and safflower.

    How many times do you feed them a day and how much to keep them in condition and shape love your content ❤

    • @RFRP

      Thanks for the kind words! That's a Great question! The breeders I feed twice a day and typically give them all the food that they can eat. They need to have as much as possible while they are feeding youngsters.
      Young and old birds that are flying only get fed one time each day, after flying, and I don't feed them very much. You don't want them to get fat. I currently have 12-14 yearling cocks and they get 2 cups of feed per day total. the type of feed is another factor. Right now I've been feeding a heavier mix (Versele Laga Champion), which is great for the breeders. Birds that I'm trying to get into race condition will get a much higher percentage of barley and other lighter grains. Hope that helps!!

    Hey James. Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this video. I loved the slo-mo effect, it was great but I really like the still shot in the beginning too. What a great idea. Was it planned or did it just happen?
    Have a great day.

    • @RFRP
      @RFRP  Před 3 lety

      Aww thanks!! Glad you enjoyed the slow-mo! I’m going to try and do more of that especially with their flight. As always, thanks for following!!

  • @loubozzelli4740
    @loubozzelli4740 Před 3 lety +1

    Good evening Dr James. Firstly, why do pigeons blink when eating? Easily noticed in the great slo-mo feeding/breeding video.
    2nd question is what would you differently with the broken wing bird that you repaired?
    Cheers from Canada!!

    • @RFRP
      @RFRP  Před 3 lety

      I think the reflex of their blinking when they pick up a seed is for protecting the eyes. Pretty interesting to observe; I hadn’t noticed this behavior prior to making this slow-mo. I also liked seeing how they first grab the seed, then stick it to their tongue to pull it back in.
      Not sure I would do anything different with binding that break. Sadly the beak was right before the joint which on birds most often heals as a solid node. Sad, but at least he can now use his wing to fly up 4-5 feet.
      Thanks for the questions!!

    How many days do you have to wait to put the bands on the youngsters?

    • @RFRP
      @RFRP  Před 3 lety +3

      About 7 days, but it depends on their size and how big they are. You have to watch them so you don’t miss the window of time
