Julia (Colpo) Grosso's penalty might have clinched it for Canada BUT the greatest penalty in that game by far was Deanne Rose's. She doesn't score and Sweden gets the Gold. Under crushing pressure, she smashed that ball upstairs where Norman keeps his mother...
And how about Goal Keeper Labbe's saves. The cumulative performance of the individuals won the game and maybe the unfortunate mistakes of Sweden gave Canada that Gold.
@@vxenon67 Stephanie Labbe played unbelievably, and successfully got into the heads of the Swedes in the deciding penalties (ie Capt. Seger sending her 'gold medal' penalty kick into orbit...). And Vanessa Gilles was cruel to the Swedes throughout that game. I feel sorry for any opposing forward coming down the pitch toward Buchanan, Gilles, Lawrence and Chapman; they make Labbe's penalty area 'the House of Pain'. Sweden definitely were favored and had the better chances but the Soccer Gods were with Canada that night.

But ya Rose's penalty was sublime, Manuel Neuer doesn't get a touch on that, pure class.

This is one of the greatest moments ever of Canadian sport and so deserved after the referee sell out vs the USA a few years ago when Sinclair scored a hattie . . Remember that Sinclair who is the greatest striker of all time finally got her deserts. Abby Wambach very much to her credit commented when Sinclair passed her on the all time scoring list ... Sinclair is the best ever! I played for a team who scored five goals a game...Christine played on a team who scored perhaps two goals a game. Christine was well past her prime here but her spirit drove this team. And I believe that John Herdman built this team and I mean no disrespect to the current coach.

Then again I think the ref gave Canada an extremely generous penalty to even get to this game. Single handedly gave Canada the game imo.

It’s a shame that no OBS camera was on Christine Sinclair the moment Julia Grosso made the gold-medal winning PK. Seeing Sinclair’s immediate reaction would have been absolutely the cherry on top of the sundae.
My favourite player is Deanne Rose. She so gritty.
I think Labbé's goaltending pressured Seger and caused that huge miss.
I can't believe this happened one year ago today... to me it really was a huge rollercoaster to see it go back and forth especially with the penalty shootout and I felt bad for Caroline Seger when she missed the chance to win it - so experienced. But as a Canadian I'm so happy for Canada getting the gold after bronzes in London 2012 and Rio 2016 where Deanne Rose tied it up to send it to sudden death, and then after the save by Stephanie Labbe, Julia Grosso scored the winner. But more importantly they all did it for Christine Sinclair who wanted the gold so badly and finally got the moment. :)

As a Swede I congratulate Canada from the bottom of my heart. The Swedish ladies have done nothing but complain for years that they have not yet won gold in the Olympic Games. Complaining won't get you gold though, only hard work and sportmanship will, and the Canadian ladies showed that they have what it takes.

Sinclair didn't win, the ref gave it to her. Early there was a handball by Canadian player in the box the ref refuse to see VAR and continued the game.

Such a shame, the olympics don't give out individual awards, because Labbe= Golden Glove, unshakable, cool, calm, collected confidence. If you're opponent keeps smiling despite her teammates missing some of their penalties, you know you're in trouble. Confidence wins matches. (addendum: YAY, it includes the medal ceremony)

Im From Bangladesh But I was born in canada. But What really hurt me was when i went to play soccer all they would say" Your Not Canadian You Cant Play!" Because of my skin they were being really racist.

I paid no attention to sports in general and soccer (football) in particular until I watched this game. I'm a fan. Watching Labbe in goal with her bring it on attitude was truly inspiring. Opposing goalies must quake when Fleming is in for a penalty kick. Amazing!

After 2 and then 3 misses by Canada Sweden looked so comfortable, both players and coaches. BIG mistake. They psychologically took themselves out of the match when Canada evened things up and extra kicks were needed

The CANWNT winning Olympic gold inspired the women’s ice hockey team to win the world championship for Canada, their first in many years.
@@thomashong2938 Congrats to them, but this is my concern with a Women's football league in Canada. The women's hockey league folded a few years ago after investors pulled out, and we all know how popular women's hockey became after they won Olympic gold. So is women's football financially feasible or will it just be a few team joining the NWSL. Also was there any TV coverage of this hockey championship, I certainly didn't see any here in Vancouver.
@@deliman7203 The IIHF Women’s World Championship aired yesterday first on TSN2 and then in the evening on TSN3 and TSN4. TSN1 and TSN5 were contractually obligated to show US Open coverage instead of the hockey game.

It’s interesting to see what went on after the end of the game and before the medal/victory ceremony and how the OBS announcers did the play-by-play and colour commentary in contrast to their CBC and Radio Canada counterparts.
Thomas, do you know of any other feeds for this game (in full) that is available on CZcams (or elsewhere)? It would be great if we could hear how the game was called by Canadian media.
@@DrFlippin CBC Sports posted their broadcast of this game and the semifinal game against USWNT (both in full) and the medal ceremony on their CZcams channel. Both CBC Sports and Radio-Canada Sports (in French) posted videos of the penalty shootout round only on their YT channels. The R-C S broadcast of the PSO was more animated than the CBC one.

Congrats to Canada. I must say, so many chances for Sweden to take the Gold. If they did not penalize, the score would have held. Seger had a wide open goal, if only she kicked it low. Aah the dynamics of Championship games.
Sweden has now lost in the tournament finals of 2 Olympics, 1 Women’s World Cup and 3 UEFA Women’s Championships. That’s partly why Caroline Seger looked so distraught at the end of the game. The IKEA Amazons have come very close to national glory, but have kept failing to seal the deal.

The empty stands helped Julia Grosso make her gold-medal winning penalty kick. She went into the kick trying to pretend it was just like practice. Having almost no crowd noise in a nearly empty stadium would have been a big plus for her.
