Old U2, back when they were really young, was so serious, solemn, grave and earnest. They seemed wise in their innocence. They were kids, almost like me. And their music felt... somehow like winter, or autumn: cold, but beautiful, raw, thoughtful and spiritual. They seemed to have such an untypical perception of the world for being young people, which some could find rather depressing or sinister, but I relate to young U2's sound so very much. I relate to feeling old as an adolescent, and everything else expressed through their songs. Their sound was so special, dreamy, magnificient, transcendent, reverent, out of this world. Not just "sad" at all. It makes me believe in the wonders of this world again, makes me remember the unpretentious and pure happiness of a child and the pain of realizing that some things are just gone forever. Now, as they have become actual "old" men, it seems like they've ironically moved on to summer: their music is upbeat, pop, too happy, too polished. I relate way less. But I'll never forget what their music has done for me, and love them so much for this that no others bands could ever come even close. I am eightteen, between the two worlds of childhood and adulthood, melancholy is my main state of mind, and young U2 just seems to get me.
As soon as the album gets to the part where An Cat Dubh goes into Into the Heart, you lean back, take a deep breath, smile, and realize you are listing to greatness!
A stunning piece of work indeed! From a band that was still creating and forming their sound. I've said it before and I'll say it again... 1980-1988 were the glory years.
begged for the cassette for Christmas one year...got it...went out into the garage, sat there in my parents' Delta 98 listening to it on a cold Chicago Christmas. One great memory.
I saw U2 in Fall 1980 at free concert at San Jose State University student union with my dorm roommate. We knew "I Will Follow" from radio play. I will forever remember the electricity in the hall when they started playing An Cat Dubh. We knew we were present for something truly special. The concrete floor of the hall flexed to the beat of the crowd in synch with the band. Roadies sprawled across the amplifiers to keep the stacks from falling over. Absolutely the best concert I've ever seen - period. Amazing memories...amazing band - U2

One of the greatest bands ever. Such talent & class. Never any bad press; no drunken or drug fueled destructive behavior, (which was pretty much standard in the 80s & beyond) just consistent great music. Saw them live 5 times, always mesmerized. Everything: vocals, guitars, percussion, songwriting, melodies, sheer brilliance & bliss....
Picked this up on a whim because of one song and became hooked and fell in love with the music. This was their coming out party and they show and proved. Music...Good music has no boundaries whatsoever!
An incredibly emotional song. It simply doesn’t get any better than this. I fell in love with u2 upon hearing this. My soul rejoices whenever I hear this. It’s the greatest travesty in all of rock that they turned into a pitiful puppet for the left.

I have loved💕 U2 for nearly 40 yrs. Not appologizing for shit cuz they r the greatest band ever! Their music is the soundtrack to my life. Starting with my love of rock to discovering sexuality for the first time into becoming socially aware of the world around me and learning what it is 2 b a responsible human being and actually enjoying my life, my spirituality and cherishing those things I hold dear. When Joshua tree came out thats when the band changed for me loved all there stuff up untill then the whole feel of the band changed then the music did not have the same impact on me as the stuff before .and the stuff before that album did something to my soul i felt everysong to the core of me
That change happened for me with that 'Rattle And Hum' album and (even more so) movie BS, when they suddenly decided to be a Blues band and to sound like all those artists they'd originally set out to differ from. Luckily they did recover for a while, when 'Achtung Baby!' was released (30 years ago!!), but it didn't take very long before I lost interest in what used to be my absolute favourite band.
I bought every album up to and including Rattle and Hum. Then I jumped off the bandwagon. Those first 3 albums were still the best. Then it started going downhill, at least for me anyway.
I recall hearing them at a college dance in 1984 for the first time, and everyone (I'm talking 1500 kids) stopped dancing to watch the video. It had to be taken seriously not danced to. Amazing.
I bought this (LP) when it came out , this was the song that told me I will see these guys into the year 2000 and beyond. Out of control also gave that feeling. Then I saw them on the Boy tour....Drums on a riser w lights, the Edge all echoing and a simple white flag Bono ran thru the entire stadium with. first time tears of joy came just from music. They have gotten close to this ambience but it can not be duplicated. genuine genius.
Wished they still sounded like this. As a musician, I understand the need to grow and experiment musically. All my favourite bands did it. But I admit that I lost track of U2 after Zooropa, which I thought was shite. When I heard Achtung Baby, I could tell they were losing their Irish rock sound, becoming more Americanized, but the album did grow on me. Saw them on that tour and they pulled off all the classics with that signature sound. Sometimes it takes more than one listen, I suppose...
On New Years Day 2022! Playing this with them It’s the howling for me 😂 We need to belt, I love all belting songs Especially this hauntingly beautiful one It’s supreme for me 😘 love ❤️ love it Yes black girl 🇺🇸
I've only seen U2 once and it was just a few months after 9/11. One of the best concerts I've ever seen! I so wish they would go on tour in 2023 but heard that Larry Mullen is having major surgery 😥
Right you are, bassman! After some thought on my previous comment, it seemed to me that U2 began losing their signature sound on Rattle & Hum. But well, you know, every musician has the right to experiment, so long as they don't turn Hollywood. But hey, I still love U2, as a musician and as an Irishman...
Haven't listened to much of this for quite awhile, and I admit that although I love the band, I've never been a HARDCORE devotee. I don't know what R&H was intended to be, but when they went from With Or Without You, Still Haven't Found, Streets Have No Name to Desire, Angel of Harlem, Love Came To Town etc, it was obvious something was changing. At least, with Unforgettable Fire and the others you mentioned, they still sounded like the band we all know and love. Guess ur a bigger fan than I.
Bit of a glitch there, in the first half of 'Into The Heart' 😉 Anyway, it's probably thanks to that sustaining keyboard sound (or is it a guitar?!) in the right channel, but to me the atmosphere here is similar to David Bowie's song ''Heroes'' 🙂
Wasn't 'Rattle & Hum' ('88) meant to be an homage to Americana? What about the bluesy country feel of 'The Joshua Tree' ('87)? What about the title 'Wide Awake In America' ('85)? Two references to MLK in 'The Unforgettable Fire' ('84)? 'Under A Blood Red Sky' ('83), live at Red Rocks? If you ask me, the evolution started much earlier. I think 'Achtung Baby' & 'Zooropa' were a conscious attempt to get back to their geographic roots. They lost a lot of their appeal in the U.S. after Zooropa...
