If this game came out 2-5 years ago, it would probably be a moderate success. However, coming out with a live service looter shooter in 2024 is like starting a disco band a few years after the "Disco Demolition" in 1979. They followed a trend that had already died by the time they got to it.
Looter shooters aren't the issue. It's the lazy mindset of releasing it incomplete and tacking on soulless micros transactions. If another borderlands came out it would be widely accepted. Looter shooters are cool and totally valid.
Although this game certainly is polished and pretty content rich so far.

No it wouldn’t have. The campaign missions are awful, the bosses are awful. The endgame is just replaying missions with different modifiers. The UI is garbage.

Bud, Agents of Mayhem came out 7 years ago. And that game flopped.
It's literally same game with same tasks and ideas with minor difference at the end of the game (Babylon using all bosses on you while Brainiac is being the Flash).
It wouldn't be successful because how boring and repetitive game is.

Who wants to play a game with bland world that is filled with so much repetivity and same tasks while company is charging you 70$ for that experience?
Especially with DLC characters that adds nothing good in the story.
Live Service is just the AAA way of saying "Early Access" and I just want a complete game when I purchase it.
AAA live-service now is just putting your soul in a dying body at this point.
Which wouldn't be so bad if more "AAA live services" had a) the uniqueness and surprises to have real staying power, and b) no cover charge or paid battle pass.
Games like these need to give more than they receive. They need to empower players to not pay, rather than have their hand out constantly and expecting people to defend their own bad purchases.

i mean they are giving you a story, open world, 4 characters to grind up, and a End game all at launch. NO battle pass or season at launch as well. And all seasons are completely free, with battle passes being yours forever once you buy them no FOMO. Seriously what else do you want them to do lol if you dont like the story or gameplay thats totally fine
The Hud is distracting. It looks worse than getting a headshot in Call of Duty and all the medals flashing across the screen.
Tbh it sounds like most rpgs and looter shooters just aren't for you. The HUD is there for contextual information. You aren't supposed to constantly be looking at it.

Datto never played any of the Arkham games?? Holy shit. They were SO good. They actually revolutionized modern brawler combat. Not to mention the stories were excellent for all of them, even Origins.

This is an interesting situation. Unlike Anthem, Redfall or Cyberpunk 2077 at launch, it is not a broken game. But they have made such nonsensical decisions when it comes to story and game design that it has managed to tarnish the reputation of the developer and tainted the Arkham franchise (by claiming it to have taken place in the same universe).

I played and loved it. I’m a big advocate for destiny 2 having the option to display all buffs at the same time but d2 is an iPad baby game and most people can’t pay attention to two things at a time ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@thefunny3320the irony of calling D2 an iPad Baby game when comparing it to this one is nuts. The amount of screen effects, flashing colors, and UI clutter in Suicide Squad is off the charts comparatively. Has nothing to do with being able to pay attention to multiple things.

I'm super in it for Datto Does Reviews, I actually thought this vid was uploaded to his second channel.
A buddy of mine was playing the game. In the middle of a boss encounter and as he is halfway through, he gets kicked offline for server related issues and had to redo his mission. That, is one of the main reasons I won't pay $70+ for the game or why I'm not interested and I LOVED the Batman games. It being a live service game hurts it. I'll wait for the game to be free on Game pass or something to try it but I've had no intrigued in this game unfortunately.

I mean this could happen with a crash in a non live service game too. I don't know why it's any different here. If Elden Ring crashed mid boss fight it's no different than what happened to your buddy.
Whats funny is that each JL member has an execution animation for when you die to them. We needed that for each of the SS members when they kill their respected hero or whoever. Theres alot of lore components the game coudve tapped into but they just didnt. And they had the nerve to charge 70 usd for it
You always start these non-D2 videos with “I’m not as good as other people when it comes to critique” when I know I’ll always appreciate what you have to say. You have a great knack for expressing your feelings on games and have some of the best speaking cadences out there for video essays.

Mainstream reviewers suck imo. They're either a Gen-X British guy talking in nothing but word salad and puns (IGN), or really lackluster surfer dude talking like it's his first day (Falcon from Gameranx/BeforeYouBuy).
They also have mainstream opinions, which is really annoying to me.
They don't represent the ppl imo, when they get a hardcore fan to review a less popular game, like a strategy game, that only a select few will be interested in.
THEN they get someone who hates third person looter shooters to review Anthem. Idk, I just think it's unfair to Anthem- the gameplay was *fun*.
And it feels like a recurring theme of reviewers, which to me is sad.

Up top; I would indeed enjoy more review content from you. This was informative and non-sensational and answered some questions I still had about what’s going on with this game’s live service and looter shooter elements.
This sounds like a game that’s worth getting on sale, and possibly a jumping off point for Rocksteady to really polish it up and make something cool (not that it isn’t already cool, but cooler).
my thoughts:
1) Even before the video, I knew it was live service which was a negative, but also it looks like the gameplay is fun which is a good sign for me.
2) It costing £60 means currently there is *no goddamn way* im buying it if its not on sale, especially for a game that I won't be able to play if my internet drops.
3) Love the "this is here on purpose" block, idk what its blocking but I just think its funny

I think if they made it a story game, great. The concept of the story was enough to get me to buy it and play it through. And I had a good enough time with the story. But man, add some god damn ceremony. I also thought I accidentally skipped a cutscene when I killed Flash. Wonder Woman got the most ceremony out of anyone and she wasn’t even an enemy.
I literally do not care about the “endgame” I just wanted story. And the story is incomplete because they want to drip feed it over time, but it wasn’t good enough for me to come back every 3 months for a new piece of story. Hearing that DLC will be free, I might come back once I hear the story is actually complete and play through it, but if I also hear future story got the same dry treatment as killing the justice league did, it’ll be a hard sell

might not be a bad idea to disclose at the start that they sponsored your stream to play this at some point. May not change perception, but may save a lot of trouble in the future if these videos become more common

No, they are brain controlled and genetically altered members of the League, not copies.
they explained that by saying when he was controlled by braniac it changed his DNA which is why the kryptonite does work. The copies theory is just that, a theory.
I’m tryna spread this info to as many people as I can since i really don’t want people to give up on this game. They aren’t clones, but they aren’t going to be “dead” permanently, they’re regenerating on the skull ship and will be rescued over the seasons

I enjoy hearing your thoughts on this game. You addressed a lot of the concerns I had with it. It always amazes me the lack of creativity when it comes to weapons. Why can't we have crazy guns? Like a gun that spits out tiny green sharks/fish sounds awesome!

I kind of enjoyed the gameplay - is there a better looter shooter example? It’s the first time I played one and it was pretty fun but I got bored of the exact same mission types repeatedly.

So I was initially going to buy the game (I like comics, I like looter shooters, my bar was not that high). Then I watched skill up’s review and crossed it off my list entirely. After this vid, I think I’m more willing to give it a shot in the future, if it’s not dead.

You could do a review these types of fronts, explaining the good and the bads, on why it was a success or why it failed. May I suggest, review ghost of tsushima online mode. Its not a live service, but it has amazing foundations

Ok, I'd like to say this from the jump before I get any farther into this video. Are the other characters bad? Every reviewer I've watch so far has been using the shark. Is it just shark + minigun = cool pick that or are the other characters just so bland that no one picks them?
No they are all the same it's just he is the least annoying
all characters play differently.. Deadshot has a jetpack, Quin has a swinging mechanic and Boomerang zips around the battlefield. to me they all have different playstyles

To be fair to the end game experience, there is a new type of mission introduced that wasn't already treaded in the campaign: Killing Time. It's an endless survival type thing that gets progressively harder as you keep killing enemies. It's not a new concept they introduced to the genre but it is another activity to break from the monotony of the 3 cycle experience.
I'm personally having a lot of fun with the game, the buildcrafting is surprisingly deep for what the game is and the characters feel very different to play which is nice. I'm maining Harley right now because she feels really well-rounded (no pun intended) and it's just generally a good time. They did a good job with the itemization as well, if you get a bad roll of a notorious/legendary item you can craft another one or reroll it so you don't need to farm endlessly just for an item, you can farm the resources instead to help get your build online quicker than other games I think.
I wish more people would give this game a shot, I think it does what it was trying to do decently well and is fun on it's own merits
It just doesn’t do enough that’ll pull people away from even better and cheaper (sometimes even free) looter shooters. I’d honestly rather play borderlands 3 if I want loot drops or build crafting. Plus with rocksteady alienating their own fans from the jump with its story and its disrespect of dc comics and their money maker character they basically shot themselves in the foot. While I agree there’s a solid foundation and it may even grow to be one of the all time greats in the loot genre it won’t matter cause nobody even wants to play this. I got to finite 3 before calling it a day cause I knew all that was waiting for me was another brainiac fight that’s not even brainiac. I’ll play it again when season 1 drops but if it’s not amazing it’s probably safe to say this game is going into the same hole as outriders, wonderlands and anthem.
Im sure it has fun aspects, just not enough to get me away from the games im playing already

My problem is the fact that its a generic looter shooter with a mid 10 hour story, which also has surprisingly terrible repetitive gameplay. There is a reason why 100 people left the company. This game model is exhaustingly overused and needs to stop.
Destiny 2 has had the same repetitive game play loop for 20+ seasons and it hasn't stopped people from playing it.

Live service/looter games is a thing of the pass for me.
2500 hours on D2 on PC and probably another 1000-1500 on console. I can’t go the daily task of grinding loot
I'm having fun with it. Mission structure is ass though. Actual gunplay and movement is fun
Same with me and the Avengers game and people were shitting on that. I really just liked the laid back fun game play in the super hero world around it. I didn't care if it wasn't PERFECT it's a game and I enjoyed it. People always act like video games have to be Elden Ring or God of War.
Similar to how I felt killing Adam Smasher in CP2077, just flopped down and shot him in the head, no cut scene, no big moment to bring on the gravitas of the situation. didn't feel like it mattered at all.
Lightfall's story walked so that SS: Kill rocksteady's story could fucking piledrive itself into the ground

This doesn't look like a "Redfall" situation where aspects of the game were released missing or broken. On the other hand, "Suicide Squad" is limited, and boring and the "live service" side feels wholly unnecessary giving the system a big flaw.
It says something when "Avengers" is full of the same "live service" crap but SE did it better by simply having more variety.
Me personally i think it was a missed opertunity to have each character have their own playstyle/skilltree sorta like Borderlands/warhammer darktide

I feel like there really isn’t much that can be done differently in the Looter Shooter space in terms of gameplay / mission types. At this point the differences are all just gonna be aesthetic and wacky weapon variety I think?
The boss encounters are fun aside from I kinda wish there was a second part to the Batman fight, the characters dying don’t need to be ceremonious, like it’s not like you’d be talking to “them” anyways, you’d literally just be talking to a brainwashed supe, Superman’s death was pretty cool where it kinda seemed like he was panicking while he died but aside from that his fight atleast utilized a lot of his powers like the cold breath and heat vision and

Me being a mainly pvp video game player for the past 15 years with the exception of destiny 2 pve I’m actually having a ton of fun on this game, I don’t understand all the hate for this game, when I have tried to played the most hype game of the year games and found them boring, but that’s me personally I don’t really care for story’s in games, when I’m playing a GAME I’m more interested in GAMEPLAY if I cared about cinematics and story that much I would just watch a movie lol

I think the deaths are unceremonious because they aren’t really dead and they are coming back - but the issue was we don’t know that until/if it comes out so unless you assume it’s not permanent (which makes you not care about any of it) and it also made it so some (it would seem many) people didn’t buy and I feel like you shouldn’t write your game in a way that meks people not want to buy your game when it comes out (at full price).

I watched 3 hours of story cutscenes on CZcams and it's actually pretty entertaining... I wouldn't play it but I'd actually watch it again.
