GAME RECAP: Penguins vs. Lightning (04.06.24) | Malkin Nets Two In 2nd

- Saturday afternoon, the Pittsburgh Penguins hosted the Tampa Bay Lightning. With plenty of motivation, the Penguins came on fast and with a purpose. After poking the puck away from the Lightning in the Penguins zone, Bryan Rust collected the puck and skated up the ice with Crosby for a 2v1. Rust held onto it, forcing the defender to go long body and freeze the goalie. Seeing a narrow path, Rust passed the puck perfectly to Sidney Crosby on the backdoor for an easy tap-in to start the scoring. The 1st period ended with a single goal for the Penguins. Evgeni Malkin scored a goal of his own, tipping Erik Karlsson’s shot from the point to start the 2nd period. Tampa Bay responded to Pittsburgh with their first goal of the afternoon. The Penguins kept battling and scored two more goals before the period was over. Kris Letang and Malkin lead the charge to add to their lead making the sore 4-1 to end the 2nd. The Lightning were not done yet. Scoring three unanswered goals in the 3rd period to tie the game late. Making a gritty play in front, Michael Bunting stuffed home the go-ahead goal for the Penguins. The game ended with a score of 5-4 and the Penguins are still in control of their playoff future.

When the Pens enter 3rd period with 3 goal lead, you just know it will be interesting 20 minutes.

The way Bunting plays, not just with his production but with his low-slot battling, reminds me of when Patty Hornqvist was at his best for us.
At least he got Geno playing again. They have been a great duo during the win streak.

exciting for next season too...imagine if they get a 30-40 goal linemate in the offseason (young guy with speed preferably) ...that line will be ridiculous
@@johnnythunder196 Honestly, even if they were to get someone who could net 20 goals and be a set-up guy who racks up assists, I'd take that in a heartbeat.
That last minute 6 on 4 was the most edge of my seat moment this season. Pens may make the playoffs yet.

@@wolfmauler He has a more realistic shot of getting to 500 before the season ends than Crosby (590 after that game) does of getting to 600.
The way he's playing he has a good shot at 4 in 5...would not be surprised at another 2 or even 3 goal performance

Remember when the Blues went from last to first and won the Stanley Cup? I hope Ned keeps standing on his head and we keep getting the bounces.
I also hope the referee is doing better. He was down for awhile.

Saw a little bit of the slumping pens in that 3rd giving up all those goals. Glad they got momentum back later and scored the go ahead. What a ride it's been these last 2 months
they're tired...been playing every other night (and sometimes back to back) for 5 weeks...terrible scheduling

@@elitetrader5468I’ve truly felt like he’s fine on defense when he’s not paired with graves. Pettersson-Karlsson was such a sick pair to start the year and I still feel like it should’ve never been broken up. He gets caught up ice a lot, but I think his actual play in his own zone is often overblown.

This streak is also proof of how pitiful Graves has been. They needed to bench him 1/3 through the season as it was obvious the clown was killing us nightly.
