I'm managing type 2 diabetes with food journaling and using a "macro budget" to be mindful of carb intake (doc wanted me to watch overall carbs, not net carbs). I've been using whey protein isolate as way to get a protein boost in my macros and nothing else -- add it to some 2% Fairlife milk and a little of their chocolate milk for flavor (which seems to have a lower carb count to other lactose free milks), and it's become a significant macro balancer for me. 24g Isopure, 150 mL 2% Chocolate Fairlife, 350 mL 2% Regular Fairlife = 346 cals, 17g carbs, 47g protein, 10g fats. Tastes good, and along with mixing up other breakfast goodies depending on what I've got at hand (sometimes eggs, sometimes fruit, etc.) it seems to make for a solid start to the day. A year later with this strategy, doing much better.

On a price/gram of protein basis, the difference in cost between isolate and concentrate is negligible. Then consider the amino acid profile of iso vs concentrate. Iso usually (always?) has a higher concentration of BCAAs than concentrate. Finally, consider the easier digestibility of isolate - I think isolate becomes a better choice than concentrate, from a muscle building perspective, at least.

In short: Isolate Whey Protein is by far the healthiest choice. Higher concentration of BCAA's, lower % for daily cholesterol intake, WAY less sugars and fats, little to no lactose, less dairy struggles, easier digestibility, much more protein per scoop, overall a lighter supplement except where it counts! You really get what you pay for.

I would argue that isolate is a little bit better if you're trying to not gain size and bulk. And concentrate is better if you're bulking and wanting to put on mass. Only a subtle difference but if you're a serious trainer and you buy a 5kg of whey and it's 80 percent protein then 500 grams of that is carbs and sugar. So worth noting.
