    notice they couldn't side palm the ball back then? pistol pete would easily do every crossover there is if he is allowed to carry like today's players

    • @bassman5123
      @bassman5123 Před 3 lety +35

      Today's players? The ball carrying epidemic started in the early 1980's. Magic being the main reason for it. You see, for the first time ever, officials had to allow a 6'9" man to play point guard. And everything changed after that. From that point on, carrying was a lot less likely to be called. Then, in the 1990's it became even less likely to be called. And it the 2000's even more so. This is what opened up the door for all of the cross over/ankle breaker flash players (Iverson, Hardaway, Williams etc). Now of course, Pistol, Dr. J, and MJ did most of those tricks before any of guys, but unlike them, those legends had games that didn't depend on dribbling tricks (I mean, some of those crossover guys' entire games were based on tricks). But those guys did take "tricks & traveling" to an entire new level. However, MJ always got away with massive amounts of carrying, especially when he played guys 1-on-1. This is one of the main reasons why I don't think he's the GOAT!

      @@bassman5123 to play a devils advocate, rules did change and players just follow the rule. MJ with his massive hands was no doubt a cheat code. but MJ really wasn't a ball handler. he was just so efficient. and never stalled the offense with excessive dribbling unlike today's leading man who is chasing MJ's ghost.

      @@joec.5009 Pete played before the “Shamgod crossover” even existed. Some of his passes are so inventive they have the same effect, the defender thinks the ball is in one location when it’s already moving in the opposite direction. As for palming, I do think there is more palming and three step traveling than before.

      @@bassman5123 now you just sound like a pissed MJj hater at the end of your comment, he didnt travel at all lol, palming the basketball isn't traveling and if you even watched jordan play, you knew most times he didn't even have any fancy dribble moves and he had straight fundamentals when dribbling the basketball. Nice,crispy and fundamental handle with the ball in his hands.

    Ball handling, hand-eye coordination, hand quickness, dexterity, creativity... simply at a crazy high level! That stutter-dribble was one of Pete’s best moves, he really mastered that to perfection... That’s a tremendous move to have in your arsenal as a pro basketball player, no matter which era. That’s the move Joe Johnson used when he got Paul Pierce to fall down.

    A lot of people may not know this but Pistol Pete's dad, Press Maravich used to tell him "you have to think 3-4 plays ahead of the game in order to keep your opponent off track".. He was a master at handling the ball and was definitely ahead of his time. If his career would have lasted longer, he probably would be the all-time assist leader. He was Magic before Magic. Pete's homework basketball drills did a good job of giving some things you can practice to master the basics. he showed that its not about having fast feet or fast hands, or being overly athletic, you can get a lot better just doing basic drills as long as you put the work in and commit to it.

      Lots of stats are heavily skewed to favor the modern day simply because they didn't record them yet. Like how blocks/steals weren't a documented Stat until the 1973-74 season. The season wilt retired. If his blocks were documented, he'd be at the top of that list. Same with 3 point shooters of the past like you mentioned. Anyone before 1979 might as well have never shot a 3 in their life in the eyes of the NBA. Kareem may have made more than 1 3 in his career. But his first 10, they weren't documented. So we'd never know anyways.n

      @@ron88303 You have to look at the game as a whole. Basketball skills like your shooting abilities, ball handling/ dribbling, high IQ, and elite defense. You don’t have to be the best at every category but you do have to be almost good at everything. You need to know and have the ability to score effectively. Knowing the right plays such as whether to score at this moment or right time to pass the ball. For example, to quote Phil Jackson comparison between Kobe and Jordan “when things are not going well, Kobe tends to force the action. Michael would switch to defense.” You also have to be unstoppable on offense and of course clutch. Accomplishments matter within context. Most importantly it has to contribute to winning championships. There is more that I can listed but if you take everything from what I said then Jordan is the GOAT. He was a well rounded player with almost no weakness other than 3 pointer maybe (note he played in an era where’s 3 weren’t heavy used and he didn’t go for much). Anyways he was unstoppable on both ends of the court. Multiple god level performances and moments especially the in the finals. If you look at his 6 finals. Each one other than 96 had a memorable performance. 91 game 2 11 consecutive points and switch hand layup, 92 the shrug, 93 55 points, 97 flu (food poisoning game), 98 45 points the last shot. There is no GOAT; there are a herd of goats. And you can't compare between different positions; a guard is different than a forward, which is different than a center. Different skill sets; different roles.That said; here are some comparative guard numbers, based on avg per 60 minutes played (regular season):
      Points generated (scoring + assists): Magic 41.1, Curry 39.5, Stockton 38.7, Jordan 38.2
      Rebounds: Magic 7.1, Jordan 5.9, Curry 5.0, Stockton 3.1
      Steals: Stockton 2.5, Jordan 2.2, Magic 1.9, Curry 1.6
      Turnovers: Jordan 2.6, Stockton 3.2, Curry 3.3, Magic 3.8

      Bird got a lot of his moves from Pistol as he played his last season coming off the bench only a shell of his prime yet he avg 23 points/game. Most the players on that team said Pistol shot them into the playoffs coming off the bench! Magic will admit he stole a lot of his moves off the pistol! Only now is he getting the recognition he deserves since U tube that will make him immortal-his college record will never even be approached! Only one Artery-that was a miracle in itself-he shouldn’t of lived past 20 and that’s just being a regular guy. My nephew was called a miracle baby and only made it to 24! Amazing! Though I’m an atheist his finding Christ & peace he was looking for his entire life made me not a believer but respect what it can do for some people! RIP PISTOL!
