Ehi Annapurne by Padmashri Awardee Sangita Kalanidhi Smt. Aruna Sairam

Today I share with you the song ‘Ehi Annappoorne’, a composition of Muthuswamy Dikshitar, in Raga Punnagavarali. This was performed at The Music Academy in 2019 for Athulya Assisted Living, an organisation that does a great service to Senior Citizens. The song addresses Goddess Annapoorani who adorns the temple at Varanasi.
The preceding shloka from Annapoornashtakam means “Please sustain me with nourishment and food”. Many people chant this shloka every day before having their meal.

*About Aruna Sairam*
Aruna Sairam (Padma Shri) is a Carnatic vocalist, composer, collaborator, humanitarian, and speaker. In addition to her performances in India, Aruna has taken Carnatic music to the global arena, at prestigious venues including the Royal Albert Hall and Carnegie Hall. Currently Vice Chairperson of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, Delhi, she was appointed in 2008 by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu as Advisor to the Department of Culture. Aruna works towards the musical education of underprivileged students, through the Nadayogam Trust, which she founded in 2011. Aruna is grateful for the training she received under her mother Rajalakshmi Sethuraman and the legendary T. Brinda, and the mentorship from several masters throughout her musical journey. Her music erased geographic borders when she was the first to incorporate Abhang, a Western Indian musical form, into a traditional, South Indian concert.

The Essence of the Punnagavarali is perfectly rendered and the goddess Annapoorani will be much pleased with her sweet voice, she will be showered by blessings , sure.. very soulful & touching rendering

What an amazing performance. For a non Indian with no knowledge of the language, then the cadence, the interlink between instruments and the singer’s voice made the experience a whole but with Aruna there is more, such love and passion I got captivated in a new level of understanding of karnatik music. Thank you mother Aruna because you are nurturing me with new life

The entire time I was not just listening her.I was getting the entire feel if this devotional song.I was getting goosebumps listening to the variations that she was singing.
