  • No other car captures the essence and optimism of the 1950s quite like the 1959 Cadillac Eldorado with its “Jet Age” styling and massive proportions that remain astonishing today. Available in Biarritz convertible and Seville hardtop forms, along with the hand-built Brougham four-door hardtop, the Eldorado series was Cadillac’s undisputed image leader for 1959, represented handsomely by this example finished in Olympic White paint over red upholstery, complemented by a power-operated white convertible top and red boot cover. Abundant standard features on the Eldorado included a heater/defroster, fog lamps, air-assisted rear suspension, a radio with rear speaker, power windows, a six-way power front seat, power door locks and whitewall tires. Power was provided by Cadillac’s 390 CI V-8 engine, delivering 345 HP with a trio of two-barrel carburetors and teamed with a 4-speed Hydra-Matic Drive automatic transmission. Just four options were available for the Eldorado, including air conditioning, cruise control, the Autronic Eye automatic headlight dimmer and E-Z Eye glass, along with a no-cost bucket seat option for the Biarritz. Both the Biarritz convertible and Seville hardtops carried a lofty base price of $7,401 when new, and as such, only 1,320 examples of the Biarritz were produced for 1959, including the example offered here. In addition to the Eldorado’s renowned ride quality, comfortable cruising is assured with power steering and power brakes, as well as desirable amenities like a pushbutton-operated radio, in-dash clock and the optional Autronic Eye automatic headlamp dimmer atop the dash. In addition to a nicely presented engine bay with proper finishes and components, the carpeted trunk houses a covered spare, roadside jack and boot cover with storage pouch. Riding on a set of period-style whitewall tires mounting steel wheels with Cadillac’s dramatic full-size wheel covers, this rare and immensely collectible 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Convertible enjoys consistent collector demand and instant recognition.

I had a 1948 Buick Roadmaster Convertible that had power windows and power bench seat. Each window had a hydraulic cylinder that had tubing to one master hydraulic pump and fluid reservoir. When you activated the switch for that window it eclectically started the pump and opened a valve at that windows cylinder raising the window. Two heavy springs were attached. When you lowered the window the same valve opened and the fluid was forced back to the reservoir by the springs pulling the window down. The seat worked the same way. The top had it's own hydraulic pump and system but the left and right cylinders had tubes going to the top and bottom of them. When top was put down fluid was pumped in the top valve of Cylinder. When put up fluid was pumped into bottom valve of cylinder. Some early Cars had AC too, I think some late 1930's Packard's were first but how long it worked and efficient?? I'm not sure.

Instead of working out the bugs from first production run and having the second year be a better product. No auto parts suppliers can keep parts on the shelf for different cars annually, that makes the product junk really quickly with crazy depreciation. I'm not saying I love rebadge engineering but way more beneficial to everyone in the long run if some parts are shared. Just doesn't work making something that complex with no parts overlap every year.

General Motors called it -----Autronic Eye. It was an electric device that lowered the Cadillac's high beams (if you had them on high) to low beams automatically when it sensed an approaching car's headlamps in the front. After it sensed the oncoming car passed it put them on high beam again. You could turn/adjust the knob on the back of it for distance/sensitivity. I had one on my 63 Cadillac that also lowered them if I came upon bright street lights. Most luxury cars today still have them (my wife's Mercedes does) It has those HID headlamps and the device is a must. The sensor is in the front Grill/headlight area someplace (I think, could be behind R V Mirror) not on the dash anymore.

7:34 Yes, these cars were over the top. But it's striking how much better the extra chrome of the Biarritz package looks on the smooth body of the '59, compared to the angular lines of the '75-78 Eldorados, which were, in my opinion, just about the ugliest Cadillacs ever offered. The '59s had style, maybe not everyone's style and they certainly had their critics when they came out, but they eloquently reflect a mindset we may never see again in this country.
