On my 61st birthday, my mom of 85 insisted she wanted to give me a present besides treating me to lunch. I said "Get me a dog so I have to walk every day." Now, mind you, I said it more for Mom who'd rarely been without a dog, but was afraid th dog would outlive her (which did happen 4 years later.) But I also knew I needed incentive to walk every day and missed having a dog in my life. The dog had to stay at Mom's house as my apartment didn't allow them, plus there was no telling how the dog wouldcget along with my cats. Turned out, they loved each other fine when I had to move to Mom's house in her final days. That dog which we got from a non-killing shelter was the joy of our lives. She just passed last April. I still push myself to walk everyday but it's not the same. I'm thinking of getting a bike since those balance exercises you have keep me pretty well up and steady.

I used a 3 wheeled rollator that weighed 11 lbs when I went to Europe. I was able to do walking tours over cobblestones , grass and dirt. I have a terrible back and problems with balance. It made all the difference and I can lift it since it is so light wt. Folds flat. I have better results than with a cane

I'm 80 years old, and I've been using Nordic Walking poles/trekking poles for over 20 years. When one has learned to bear down on the poles, stress on knees/hips is greatly reduced, and one gets upper body conditioning. As mentioned in the video one gets more exercise with the poles than plain walking, but paradoxically it seems easier than plain walking (to me). I also snowshoe in winter, and always use two ski poles--very stable, and great exercise.

  • @mikekelley9174
    @mikekelley9174 Před 10 měsíci +4

When using the trekking poles, I find that "nordic walking" is best. You plant the right pole as you step on the left foot and left pole with the right foot. Similar to nordic skiing.

Great video. Finally, athletic shoe companies are making shoes with wider toe boxes. Altra was mentioned in a previous video, but other non-zero drop shoes are available. Switching from a high heel drop to a zero drop can be difficult. Also, resistance training helps considerably. I'm 73, and I just walked my first marathon. My time wasn't pretty, but I'm proud that I was able to complete it and not feel totally beat up afterwards.

I have used "trekking poles" for years (I am 68) ... it is not an "oldie" thing at all. If walking on uneven ground/game trails (my situation), trekking poles do a lot: balance, better posture, support on up/down. At any rate, trekking poles are necessary for me to walk comfortably in my rural area.

I just discovered Nordic treking poles this year. I love them. Using the poles really helps me stand taller and gives me just a little extra stability (Arthritis in my spine & left leg caused some gait changes that the poles seem to reverse.) I find I get better results adjusting them 1 inch longer than recommended. At the "proper" length, my wrist would flex just a little past neutral at the end of my downward stroke & this aggravated the arthritis in my wrists. That extra inch took care of that. My wrists now remain neutral throughout the movement 🎉

Sadly I have to hold my doggies' leash in my left hand, so I must use my wooden cane (inherited from my brother) in my right hand when walking long distances (bad right knee). Even with my hand through the leash loop and my hand holding the straight portion of the leash (a few feet from the Y I put in for my two 14-20 pound pups -- two leashes being too likely to get me tangled in it), my right hand is not able to maintain a strong enough grip for long. I much prefer my 15 pound ironwood staff I cut from some cut down brush at the scout camp back in 1975, but I need to pur a cap on the end of it...

I feel awful with exercise intolerance. I wish I felt better during and after physical activity. I remember even at 8 years old, being baffled at recess. Everyone was whooping and hollering, running around being spitfires like they should. What I don't get is doctors tell me exercise give people energy (it doesn't me but I have gene mutations) so why isn't it self perpetuating? Why aren't people automatically drawn towards exercising, walking? Why do they constantly have to be reminded and prodded?

Our bodies are not like metal where even normal move may fasten the wear and tear, but for us, it just strengthen it by breaking it down and recuperate with proper setting.

@@breezybird403 Well I had a discectomy in 2018, at L4L5 from really bad debilitating sciatica. I re ruptured it about a year or so later, so all the pain came back and even worse. I had L4L5 fusion from the back a week later. It did take away the sciatic pain again but never felt right. Apparently I did not fuse so in April of 23 had a revision L4L5 from the front to redo the initial fusion. It is 6 months later and I do feel much better. Did they say what is causing your pain? Any leg pain or just back pain? Are they going in from the front, side or back to fuse you? PT has not really done anything for me since the onset of the sciatic pain. Apparently when they did the surgery they entrapped a nerve in my stomach area and the vascular surgeon that did that part said there is really nothing they can do but I have seen some good videos online where they go in and see the nerves that are caught and release them. Honestly if I had to do it again I would have found a surgeon that could have gone in from the side with a scope and laser and cleaned up the disc and removed it without damaging my back lamina instead of the discectomy. I might have still ruptured it again but who knows. Good luck on your fusion! I know plenty of people that have had 100% recoveries from fusion. So what are they saying is the reason you are having trouble walking? Is it a disc pushing on a nerve?

When I am in an open space, I get panic attacks and freeze up. I'm normally ok on carpet. I don't know what the heck is going on. I can't even walk through a parking lot unless there are cars nearby. Once I get to an open space, I feel panicky and I have to look at the ground and concentrate but again my balance is on my toes. I can't walk through the supermarket without using a cart for balance. Also, that same leg is shorter, since knee replacement, on my right leg. Because of the second toe problem, I had to stop using the quarter inch lift, in my left shoe. My problems are a back issue with minor foot problems. A podiatrist may help and get you custom orthodics. A good physical therapist gives exercise ideas. My goal after back surgery is to get an e-trike. I can ride all year long on bike paths and want to get out. They are expensive. I will need clearance from my physical therapist.

    A Poem for the Ocassion:
Once Upon A Time, Adam & Eve had Two Sons, Abel & Cain
Abel gave us Sugarcane and Cain, gave us Walking Cane
In other words, one gave us Relief and the other, Pain

Wish you had gone a little moe in depth in how to use the cane because I've been using one improperly from watching how you demonstrated. Also my observations of watching older people walk they don't swing their arms and their shoulders and necks are in poor position.

A treadmill is a good idea since you can hold on to the sides. You won't fall down or step into potholes by accident.

Whats the obsession with youth? I'm not young and don't want to be anything but as i am - aches aging and all. Aging is nothing to be ashamed of, afterall we can't control it can we, its Nature! Watching older people telling people to focus on youth is unnatural. Bob for example has no control over Nature it is controlling everything. Our bodies aren't ours to control, only manage, so the youth obsession is unnatural. The time frame of youth is baby to early 30s, after that it starts rapidly declining but we are shamed into believing we are to blame when situations arise.

My artist gramps was still walking to the bus stop to ride to Manhattan at 92 with a cane. He had no sense of smell at all, so when a skunk refused to get off the sidewalk, he shooed it with his cane.
Of course, he got the squirt all over and got right onto the bus🤪; so of course, everyone had to get off the bus and wait for a replacement. True. 🫡
