They are fantastic,are they against war,or do they just love history like us.
"Six miles of ground has been won - and half a million men are gone" is probably the single lyric sentence of Sabaton's that has stuck with me the most.
You can try to set the senseless killing into contex, but in reality it is just incomprehensible what humanity does upon itself.
Exactly that line hits hard.

My Maternal Grandfather's youngest brother was gassed in the Second Battle of Passchendaele which was the culminating attack during the Third Battle of Ypres in Novembre 1917 at Hill 60. He died in 1919.

I have 2 descendants fought in 3rd battle at paschendale - 1 died and 1 survived to only die 3 months after he arrived back in England. Never forgotten 100+ years after their passing.
That point you made about "what am I doing here" is excellent. How many young men thought that exact same thing? "What am I doing in this hole in the ground, in the pouring rain? Why am I here getting shelled and shot at?"

My ancestral County of Sussex suffered a huge loss at the Somme called 'The Day Sussex Died' The 11th, 12th and 13th Battalions of the Royal Sussex Regiment, consisting of approximately 4,500 men, were known colloquially as “Lowther’s Lambs”. The 12th and 13th Battalions, supported by the 11th, were sacrificed in a diversionary raid on the Boar’s Head salient at Richebourg on 30th June 1916 in an attempt to draw German attention away from the main Somme battle area further south. The Battle at Boar’s Head lasted less than five hours, but the Southdowns Brigade lost 17 officers and 349 other ranks. Over 1,000 men were wounded or taken prisoner, and the 13th Battalion was all but wiped out. June 30th 1916 was subsequently known as 'The Day Sussex Died'.
Oh my, the second you explained the title my heart sank, I cannot fathom what they went through. I can only imagine what was going through their minds, these men must never be forgotten and always honored. After watching this my first world problems seem embarrassing to me. Thank you for the video and thoughtful commentary, it was alot to unpack but so glad I was able to watch this on this lazy Sunday

The German Labour Unions were strongly opposed to the war and campaigned against it. This was partly why the High Seas Fleet refused to sail again after Jutland.
It doesn't surprise me that these unions were beginning to be highly politicised and sensitive to internationalist ideas.

I'll never understand how this battle is rarely ever mentioned or covered in media. It was one of the bloodiest battles of WWI, and for what? At the highest estimate 850,000 men dead with both British and German casualties combined. A tragic waste of life. Perfectly epitomises WWI.
Yes very true. I imagine that in the popular image it's in the shadow of the Somme and Verdun?
@@ToonStory-fh4gn Yes, among other battles. The casualties are most likely around 500-600k realistically so I understand why there's more focus on the Somme and especially Verdun. Still, a very bloody battle.
I think Passchendaele more so than any other battle throughout the war perfectly sums up WWI. A battle that claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands for very little gain. It did help relieve some strain on the French forces in the south in the aftermath of the Nivelle Offensive but the British ultimately failed to capture the German submarine bases. I can't say it was for nothing. It certainly helped the allies in the long run, the German army took a huge hit that they simply couldn't recover from but I can't help but feel the battle was a complete disaster for both sides.
"Halt in Belgrade" would have been so much better than this.

It's a great movie too,I always remember them saying they didn't nail him to a door,it's just that explosions throw men into awful positions.
