You are absolutely right. It was the decision of One more brainless leader Mahatma Gandhi otherwise Sardar Patel was reccomended by the congress working committee at that time. But Mahatma Gandhi insisted on stupid Mulla Jawahar LAL Nehru. Which was a biggest mistake of that time for which the people of India still suffering due to Jawahar LAL Nehru wrong policies and wrong decisions.

Nehru's understanding of geopolitics might be nieve But He is reason India is still democracy ....All IITs ISRO and scientific advancement in future was because of initial steps taken by early prime ministers .... India was such a mess at a time of Independence illiterate population internal divisions poor agriculture ....Many countries which got independence along India went under dictatorship civil wars later but India is still standing high because of morals of constitution makers ....
He himself was a chosen one in the congress party, not the elected one. So, it would be better to not talk about democracy in the context of Nehru.
PS: Similar or better steps would have been taken by Sardar Patel(had he been PM) or Bose(had he been alive)
Thanks @ARJUN M for saving my time. I was about to comment the same thing. Everyone knows one side of the story ( Distorted one) but no one wants to listen this side of the history. Religious people often hate the leader who has Scientific , Rational Temperament & progressive mindset. No wonder Majority of Indians hate him. I hope one day we Indians will appreciate him for his contributions to India & upcoming generations.

If Nehru gave so much to the country or laid the foundation of India, built democracy, then the same Nehru made such blunders in the country, which the country has to pay even today. And the condition of the country would have been much better if the leader of India was elected democratically in the true sense, apart from Nehru or Gandhi family in Congress, there were many capable leaders who were more patriotic than them but they put their own family before the country. By counting some good deeds of someone, the blunders committed by them cannot be hidden.
