@@gregevigan Ah, I got whooshed. I stand by my response, though!

🤣
I always liked this movie. It's just... fun. The actors seem to be having fun. The special effects crew seems to be having fun. The director seems to be having fun. The writers seem to be having fun. Even the soundtrack is fun. It's just generally a kind of fun movie.
and really I think that is the point of any film within this genre whether it entertains a lot of people or just a few. They have to be fun even the seriously dark horror movies are fun and entertaining.
House II is better still
Sorry but I gotta disagree with you (The first time ever!). I thought it was fun and "Norm" brought a nice real life average Joe kind of charm to the film. The Greatest American Hero vs Bull from Night Court . How could you go wrong?
Yeah, I saw it as a kid and I loved it. For me, the comic elements made it easier to take (because I was a fearful kid). It was kind of my gateway drug to horror movies, and I will always be grateful to it.
"House" is a good movie.
What? A movie that fuses horror and comedy with winged creatures, a fat bloated zombie, and a crawling severed hand? I mean this film was basically setting up a framework for Evil Dead II before there was an Evil Dead II. (And I love BOTH!) House and Evil Dead II are the chocolate and peanut butter of horror films that just go well together.
And House 2 is a completely different beast altogether than this movie.
House 2 is More like a anthology film
and also had another guy from cheers.
I wouldn't call it "completely different"; it was also a fun horror comedy, or, should I say comedy-horror.
This movie is great and fun. It had a big influence on my art in middle school. It's like Flash Gordon. Cheesy, but immensely rewatchable
Necessary Evil 👹👾💀😍🍿😌🤩🙂📼🎥📼
I agree
I loved this movie... and its crappy sequel. This one has Norm, the sequel has Cliff.
And a weird caterpillar dog!
I liked that one too!
Sequel was good, too.
I really liked House 2. It was more like a fantasy adventure romp than a horror. House 3 was more of a straight horror and lacked the comedy aspects of the first two (wasn't it originally _not_ meant to be a House movie? I basically noped out when the teenage daughter got raped)
House 4 was just cack though.
Have you run out of actual bad movies while in lockdown, so you're needlessly taking pot shots at good movies?
House was a bad ass movie. Anyone who remembers the 80's can spot a lot of famous actors. You've got Bull, Norm, and the American Hero for starters. On top of that you got great special effects for the time, and a great plot.
These guys also went on to make NIGHT OF THE CREEPS and one of my all time favs MONSTER SQUAD.
Monster Squad was a work of genius.
Monster squad is incredibly great
yeah I'll definitely give you the one about the neighbour leaving her kid with Roger, that was terrible, terrible parenting, but on the whole it was an entertaining film really. If characters didn't make bad decisions then we wouldn't have horror films.
What? You mean it isn't okay to split up when being chased through a haunted house by a psychopath wielding a chainsaw????
I love this movie! We definitely disagree on this one
This film is full of 80's brilliance.
I gotta disagree, this movie has a distinct charm to it. 8 out of 10 from me :)
Yeah, not a bad movie at all, especially by the standards of this channel.
Rich McGee watch Mac and me it’s the worst movie ever made 😊
For me,Poltergeist just didn't do it for me.I like my haunted houses creepy and subtle, not bombarded with SFX.
I LOVED this movie, Robin :( You're breaking my heart over here. William Katt and George Wendt and Richard Moll? COME ON! Of course I'm old enough to have seen it during its initial release...
So what about House (1977)? Its.. Wild.
The Japanese movie you shouldn't see while stoned, or you'll miss the glorious insanity.
I love this movie, but I enjoyed your review too! "Oh Roger, you've lost another one" had me cracking up.
This movie is pure 80's, it's fun and quirky. I loved it!
Monster in my Closet is another goofy 80’s monster movie.
Kemmdog73 agreed😊
Gotta disagree. I loved this movie when I was a teenager still love it. Looking back it reminds me of a couple of other of my favorites "Evil Dead II" and "Return of the Living Dead". Different strokes for different folks, I guess. "The People Under the Stairs" and "Tucker and Dale vs Evil" were also imo under appreciated movies that were in the same horror comedy style that I love.
Ben?! Bull!
No, really, that's Richard Moll from TV's Night Court as Ben. It's kind of hard to take it seriously.
Don’t forget he was Two-Face in the Batman animated series.
Richard Moll is funny and genuinely scary in this film.
@@kemmdog4444 you beat me to it! he was also in a great movie called the sword and the Sorcerer
Hey as long as you don't have to pay rent or a mortgage I'll put up with a few ghosts and past suicide in my new house.
I ain't afraid of no ghosts and bustin' makes me feel good
and who needs a wife and kid hanging around!!!
This is far from a bad movie. Not complaining, I’m happy to see anyone talk about this franchise! House is my all time favourite horror film! It’s crazy, goofy and the fx are great! Just wish the franchise had a bigger legacy! Also, there’s a few ghostbusters connections in there across the franchise.
I was eight when this came out and the tv ads really freaked me out. When I finally saw it about seven years later, I was massively disappointed by how silly it all was. It really should have been a straight horror movie. House II: The Second Story was marketed as a horror-comedy and I absolutely loved it.
I love this crappy movie. It's just weird and I love it
Agree with your point, the movie was quite uneven in its horror/humor mix, as if clueless about what it was doing; the sequel was in a similar vein. As for not liking a popular movie, I've never understood the critically acclaimed status of 1977's Suspiria, which I find to be a silly, unscary witchcraft movie accented by a gaudy high-fashion-influenced set design and cinematography that merely calls attention to itself without heightening the scares.
I'm totally on board with you. Suspiria is dreadful.
I can't fault your reasons for not liking the movie, but I grew up with it and learned to look past the extreme tonal shifts that occur throughout the film. I loved the actors in the movie and the practical effects for the most part were pretty amazing. The 2nd film really moves into the comedy area way more. The 3rd one has nothing to do with a haunted house, and the 4 is just dreadfully boring.
The "review" is idiotic. Of course a reviewer must take into account that it is a horror COMEDY.
This is the most controversial Dark Corners review there has ever been :) It's up there with dissing Rocky IV - you've got the Lockdown grumpies haven't you ;) Still I can't argue with your logic but this is House - logic be damned. When watching this at the Kings Cinema in West Brom in 1985 the last thing I wanted was logic.
Slamming the so-called "Bram Stoker's Dracula" was probably pretty controversial. But we shall have to see how the dust settles! :-)
Actually Zardoz is probably the one we get the most backlash on.
@@DarkCornersReviews Blimey!
I was about to bring up Coppola's Dracula as well but that was a few years ago now. I still think they're pretty wrong on that one too.
@@DarkCornersReviews Seriously, that movie was complete shyte.
If you saw it in the 80's as a kid you would have loved it. Missed the mark on this one.
House walked so that Evil Dead could fly
I haven't seen this film since the 1980s but I loved it when it came out. The main reason is it is so insane. It's the first haunted house movie I remember seeing where the house was actually haunted and was entertaining. I mean, okay, The Shining, right, well, at it's core The Shining is a psychological horror movie and you could argue that the ghosts are incidental to the plot and what really is happening is a marital breakdown, essentially, Kramer vs. Kramer in an isolated hotel. And then there was another one that popped into my mind while writing but it popped back out again, therefore, it doesn't exist.
From your review, it seems like this movie started out as a Shining Clone but became so much more entertaining by going a bit mad and letting the house be haunted, letting the psychological horror be brought out as actual ghosts and laughed at.
Of course, House 2, a movie I do not like, took the slapstick to extremes and forgot the horror. And then there was House 3, a movie I still haven't seen except in the callbacks in House 4, which is a movie that still makes me afraid of delivered pizza. But those are different stories for different comment sections.
That was the very first horror movie I ever watched and I still love the mirror breaking scene.
I love the first two.
I fell asleep watching this channel on auto-play and now I have no idea which ones I've watched.
Go back and start again. You don't want to miss anything.
I loved this movie as a kidd lol 'House'
Don't agree, this was a great scary fun film from the video store back in 1985,8/10.
Really, this was a great time of a movie, even with the illogic. Though, I must say, I remember being similarly concerned with the points you bring up. But, if the movie's good points outweigh the bad, it gets a pass from me. Kinda like the Bond film "The Man with the Golden Gun"; a lot of fans slam it, justifiably, for a middle act full of pandering silliness, but, an awesome concept, great locations and Chris Lee in one of his quirkiest roles with Moore at his best elevates it above "Octopussy" and "A View to a Kill", virtually any Brosnan film (except "Goldeneye"), "License to Kill" and Quantum of Solace".
Good review. But I actually enjoyed that movie (nitpick - "hanged" - not "hung" - sorry, can't help it)
Wow. I completely forgot the comedy parts. All I remembered was that Roger is tormented by Ben.
The possessed sword fish is really funny and the baby sitting sequence is hilarious! Fun movie all round.
Crazy coincidence! I just watched this last night for the first time ever. I remember seeing the trailer when it was first released but never got around to it until just last night. I liked it, but cringed at all the places you obviously did. But we can also just shrug and say, "It was the 80's..."
HOUSE was a part of classic triumvirate in the vein of facetious ROTLD & Evil Dead 2.
I liked this move as a young teen. Still like it.
Even though his aunt killed herself there, even though his son mysteriously disappeared there, even though it is certainly haunted... still a bitchin crib with a whack pool! I liked this period of practical effects and tongue in cheek horror films. Not as classic as Beetlejuice or Ghostbusters, but up there with the Waxwork series.
I really enjoyed House as a young teen. I still think it's a fun haunted house movie. It kind of has all the elements you'd want. But I won't defend it as a great film.
Hey DarkCorners. I really appreciate the recommendation. I've been seeing this on Prime but now I'm actually gonna watch it.
7:47 -> Come on Mr. Bailes ! This movie's silliness is what makes it so lovable !
House, a great popcorn flick sit down, drink a beer, have some popcorn and enjoy movie night with friends.
Love House. Great starter horror movie for kids. Not too intense but nice creepy moments. Big Ben's makeup FX still looks great. Roger's ultra deep V sweaters are a hoot. And....Norm!
I’ve been devouring your content randomly. A few a day, and I’ve seen tons of videos.
A can only think of one so far that you guys liked. It’s funny to me; you don’t seem to really like genre pics. Oh well, still enjoy the reviews.
As far as house. It always reminded me of an EC comic story. Something that would have been in the vault of horror. They took really serious subjects and added gallows humor to it.
Our streaming reviews are more positive. There are lots of genre pics there. Thus strand in general films that we can make jokes about, so we might secretly like more than we let on.
Overall silliness I just figured was the point, like Evil Dead, army of Darkness. I liked that you just did not believe what would happen next, just a fun movie with some gore.
I agree with your questioning murder , suicide and Vietnam as slapstick material .
I knew someone who committed suicide some years ago and no one was laughing at the funeral
Linda Easley Not everyone deals with their the inner trauma the same way. You’re looking at the experience from the outside in. Roger’s dealing with his form inside. Some people need humor to deal with what they have experienced. To there’s nothing funny about anything means you don’t understand the power humor has on us a species. There’s some serious writings on this topic by world respected authors.
@@lordoshower3478 I dont believe it's appropriate to look at personal tragedy in a humorous way and dont believe in the " we all deal with tragedy in different ways " thing . Some cry , some withdraw but get a laugh out of it - that's messed up . Theres a 1960s song by the Birds taken from the Bible book Ecclesiastes - To Everything there is a purpose .A time to mourn , a time to laugh , a time to die ..Dont want to get into it , really but it's in my view ,sick and disgusting to feel happy about death
@@lindaeasley4336 Oooo. I'll try to be brief, coz this is all too personal, but I got the giggles while leaving one of my parents' funerals. Luckily, only a few close friends were nearby at the time. Looking back, I think it was hysteria? A release of the pressure of not acting crazy at the actual funeral? I remember thinking people must thing I'm awful, but it wouldn't stop. Point being, laughter doesn't always mean "happy". It can sometimes mean "you might wanna keep an eye on me for a few hours, coz I think I'm losing my shit here".
Oh wait. One other thought... When I was a really little kid, I had to interview my grand-father about WW2 for a school project. When I asked him his worst experience (which I won't get into) he laughed while discussing it. When I asked his best experience (which was obviously "coming home") he sobbed uncontrollably. I was confused as hell, asked my mum about it later. She just told me to turn a blind eye, and that emotions can overload and come out wrong sometimes.
I'm no expert. I guess the term "gallows humor" is an olden-days term for how some people use humor in their darkest hour. I'd suggest pretending not to see if someone laughs when it's really inappropriate, coz they're prolly as unstable as f***.
Thank you for confirming what I always thought - that it WAS a straight horror, clumsily retro-shoe-horned into a "comedy."
Thanks again dark corners 👍👍
Popular movies that I think are overrated: Labyrinth, Grease, The Warriors, Hereditary (I actually like it, but I don't think it's as good as a lot of people say), Blade Runner 2049, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Con Air.
The thing about the House movies, at least the first two, is the tonal shifts are just plain annoying. I guess the second embraces the silly and weird right off the bat, so it's not as jarring. But horror comedy works best if you walk the line juuuuust right. And if you slip too much one way or the other, you've lost it. Especially if you veer into the comedy too much. The Evil Dead original trilogy for instance. One leans into the horror more. It's an awesome horror flick with just a taste of horror. Army of Darkness leans way into the comedy, which is probably what keeps it the black sheep of the family. I love it, but I can see why some fans aren't as keen on it. The second one completely nails the horror/comedy aspect, but it's a rare thing. House....Just didn't manage to get it in the right neighborhood. They tried to go too dark in places for a horror comedy. And too danged silly in others. Your movie has to try to keep the same tone within itself. It can shift from film to film, but if it's changing from scene to scene....Not so good. A popular movie I detest? Saw.
I am surprised that you obviously did not get that this was a comedy that did not meant to be taken serious. I like it very much. Its trashy, well played and much fun...
This movie is not at all on the same level with those demolished here.
And the war demon in the closet is very convincing & not laughable at all.
this was a good movie. I guess it looks cheesy now and have some mistakes and inconsistencies....but we loved it.
House 3: The Horror Show
Richard Moll from Sword and the Sorcerer. Now there's a cliché movie just waiting to be reviewed. 😅
That has recently been added to our list, so look out for it in a couple of months
Yeah, this a confused mess that needed to pick a tone and stick with it.
I can't understand why Titanic is popular, it is just a by the numbers trashy romance novel that throws in the real life deaths of 1500, why do people think this is good?!
it would've been better if at the end all those dead people began to rot before the old woman and as Leonardo Di Caprios face fell off he said "welcome home, We have been waiting for you!"
Agreed whole heartedly about Titanic. It is a cheap trashy romance movie. I watched it once and knew that was the beginning of the end for James Cameron, or at least my appreciation of his work. I will probably get trashed for this, but the tiresome boring preachy epic that was called Avatar sealed the deal for me with him.
@@scotsmith2391 Yeah, I walked out of the theater wondering why I had paid $13 to see a nearly four hour long remake of Ferngully, when I didn't like the original when I was a kid.
I think Alita proves maybe he should just stick to co-writing scripts that other people direct and write the final drafts of from now on.
Can't believe he is wasting his talent on Avatar sequels of all things.
@@Mattfromthepast I saw the Imax version and it was pretty but I actually fell asleep. Somebody kicked my seat from behind and it startled me and I looked up at the screen and thought "Wow this is still going on????", LMAO
Even though I do have love for the camp of 1986 House, I think the House aka Hausu from 1977 is a better movie of the a similar name. Definitely love to see your take on it!
I love House. You are out of your mind lol
Definitely the last review I'd watch from you 🙄
If you thought that was all over the place, you should watch the second one......Dinosaurs, a zombie cowboy, and Cliff from Cheers!
I saw this movie at the theater when it came out. I was 14...I remember thinking it was pretty shitty back then. My opinion hasn't changed! House 2 on the other hand...yeah, that sucked too.
House opened in 1,440 theaters on February 28, 1986
C'mon, Vietnam and suicide are two of the most comedic subjects ever.
Just ask american comics.
BRB, just going to watch it.
Some good, some bad. A bit like a Tim Burton film in terms of being over the top and silly, without the Burton style. Bit like Bad Taste with more money. As soon as the old lady smiled at the cop I was hooked.
saw this movie as a kid, its great!
This review is clever and funny. Especially about the real estate agent, actor Michael Ensign, (Ghost Busters references), having the worst luck with haunted properties and then there is Norm. 😆😆😆😆😆😆
Very well done. I've never seen this movie but you convinced me it's bad. 😉👍
The thing about House is that it seems to be the one film non-horror fans have seen, probably because of the sitcom stars. Matinee also seems to be popular with non-horror fans.
@1:35 Must be filled with too many fond memories to let a little thing like ghosts and monsters warn him off!
There's something I always remember about this film and that's one of stills on the back of the VHS case. Amongst other scenes from the film, there was an image of Roger apparently hugging the fat, bloated ghoul his wife turned into.
This leads me to think that there was a bit cut off the end of the film. As is, the film ends with Roger and his son leaving the House and being greeted by Roger's ex wife. His son runs to his mother as Roger looks on with an exhausted smile. Freeze frame, fade to black, credits. However, that still seems to suggest that after that smile, Roger goes to his wife and reconciles with a hug, only for it to be revealed that... Dam-dam Daaa! she's actually the bloated ghoul.
Loved this movie as a kid
Now I really want to see you do House II!
OH MY GOD I HAVE MISSED YOUR VIDEOS GREAT REVIEW
Be well
Stay safe
Look after yourself and your loved ones in these unexpected circumstances but oh my god have I missed your video
😁😁😁😁👍❤️💕👺👹👿
Tonally it's a mess but such ridiculous fun.
When I first saw Scream when it came out I thought everyone saw it as a comedy parody of horror movies. I liked the movie but I was surprised to find that anyone thought of it as horror.
As far as popular movies go, specifically in the niche of the movies that get reviewed around here? Shin Godzilla, I loathe it with every fiber of my being. such a frustrating experience sitting through it. It's not easy for me to admit it either, i'm a die hard Godzilla fan and have been for 30 years, but my god I couldn't wait for that movie to be over.
There was a House 3 I think it was only called that in overseas markets, but call ‘the horror show’ in the US .
Love this movie!
Nice to know I'm not alone here. I liked parts of this movie on their own, but as a cohesive whole it just left me wanting something more consistent.
IMO This movie was actually super deep while appearing not to be. The only thing that should be taken as definitely real is that he is a war vet with a fractured family who is in the grips of trauma.
Everything else is a question of is it real or delusion or is it him writing and using his writing as the vehicle to explore (and in exploring, to confront) his trauma?
The symbolism of his buddy as a zombie - literally dead but still alive IN HIS PSYCHE, the water he dives into and from which he saves his son, the nearly endless abyss into which the battle against the zombie is forcing him and from which the only escape is to face the zombie directly and without fear... this movie (sub-par acting aside) was a masterpiece. As campy as it is, the monsters are genuinely terrifying and that itself is a clue there is a deep vein of serious underneath the silly.
I would also never shut anyone down for disliking something I enjoyed. I find it fascinating to get another POV. And I thought this review made some great points, especially about how the shifts in tone can be jarring for viewers. And I can see how a film like this, one that’s well made with great creature designs, amazing makeup, good performances, can be even more frustrating than a poorly made hack job.
Not a "great" movie but definitely a good one and a fun movie. I enjoyed how it swung me from laffs to scares and I still re-watch it once in a while. Just watching this review makes me watch to dig it up and see it again.
But it's such a good neighbourhood, great commuter links!
Although it is not your usual Dark Corners cup of chai, I read this morning the "Mel Magazine" article "‘The Big Lebowski’ Has Never Been Good" by Tim Grierson at , and I say, "Amen." (As Bob Denver said in the classic [?] "Gilligan's Island" episode "And Then There Were None," "Sticks and stones may break my bones . . . but please, don't throw sticks or stones . . . please, please, don't throw sticks or stones.")
Robert Chamberlain You, sir, shall forever be on my list as well as the author.
What...? I missed this one (and it sounds like I was lucky.)
Watched enough of Linkara's POWER RANGER videos to notice a resemblance between Ben and one of the big bads from that show.
This movie was great. I bet you liked The Ring
I love the first two films. I didn't know until Arrow Video put out a 4-film boxset that there were two more sequels!
I remember renting this movie in a videostore because I was intrigued by the cover art (horror movies often had great VHS cover art). I liked the special effects that have a Ghostbusters touch. A popular movie that I didn't like? The Lord of The Rings. I felt it was way too long (especially the third part) and it didn't really appeal to me.
I miss those old posters, such great artwork even for the worst film. The poster for this is great, has nothing to do with the movie, but so iconic.
I loved this movie. Just kinda makes me sad you couldn’t enjoy it too. 😔
Was it William Katt's wardrobe by International Male catalog that put you off? I doubt anyone outside of Miami and COLT Studios really dressed that way at the time.
The beginning of Saving Ryan's Pvts put me off a bit. The sound of the bombs going off as the landing craft are heading to the beach sounded exactly like the sound in ESB where the Tie Fighter bombers are dropping(?) bombs on the asteroid. I really couldn't get into the movie afterward. No matter how hard Tom Hanks Hanked.
I hope you guys do a video on House 2 the second story as well this is good stuff! 👍🏻
"The Second Story" is probably the best pun in a film title ever.
I agree. This movie was bad. You should instead check out the sequel, House 2. It has a cowboy, a pterodactyl, a dog-apiller, and Cliff from Cheers (instead of Norm). Now that was a classic.
