      Had she not drawn Graf 10,000 times in Grand slams I think Novotna could have won another slam perhaps. But Graf new what a formidable opponent Novotna was. Novotna often gave Seles and Pierce fits as I recall. I got to watch Jana at Wimbledon for an exhibition around 2001 when I was visiting London. Tried like heck to get her autograph but didn't succeed. Was a highlight of my trip!!

      @Mel1lvar Před 5 lety +20

      I agree completely. It's like Pliskova last year when she smashed the umpires chair, people find anger and frustation more relatable if it doesn't happen all the time.
      I also think that's why people had such a negative reaction to Serenas outburst at the 2018 US Open, the public had kinda seen it all before.
      In her 20 years on court I think this is the most wound up I've ever seen Venus, that's testament to her poise and grace imo.

    • @JCole-fg3rr
      @JCole-fg3rr Před 5 lety +30

      Mel1lvar no people had such a negative reaction to Serena being upset because she’s a black woman. Serena’s only been upset 4 times in her career, and they were all over very questionable calls, in very important moments. Male players go off more than she does and there is never that much backlash.

    • @ronnydraper
      @ronnydraper Před 5 lety +5

      @@Mel1lvar No public hasnt. She actually hasnt gotten that angry that many times during a match. If you watch her play religiously you'd know that. Serena got hate like anyone who has dominated a sport for so long would have because so many want the underdog to win. Its why they still consider Serena v. Maria a "rivalry" when Serena has gotten the better of those matches.

    • @usaskjock
      @usaskjock Před 5 lety +4

      @@JCole-fg3rr it's more that Serena has lost her cool in big matches and thus the public is more aware of it. The 2004 Capriati match was a travesty as was Indian Wells 2001 where Serena was 100% the victim. The 2009 match is an interesting one as we all agree it was a bizarre foot fault call but she handled it poorly. 2011 and 2018 were her fault entirely. Serena is 100% correct that a male player would never be called for code violation for 'thief' esp in a SLam final, never would be given a game penalty.... by anyone BUT Carlos Ramos who is consistently the most stringent ump on tour.

      Aaron Lecciones I love when someone who hasn’t walk in someone else’s shoes nor knows anything about their life or up bringing tries speak on behalf of them. You have no idea what it was like for them being black and trying to make it in a white sport. Nor do you know what it was like for Arthur Ashe or Althea Gibson. Venus felt as if she was being cheated which may have had deep rooted feelings from how she had been treated in previous tennis matches. You don’t know so don’t make judgements. Also this is the most I’ve ever seen Venus get angry she is one of the classiest woman to ever play the game and part of the reason there is equal prize money.
      Before you start judging people walk in their shoes. You do realize the reason there is a challenge system is due to how badly Serena Williams was cheated in a match before right? And all Serena could do at the time was accept the calls even though she knew they were cheating her. Let’s put you through countless situations where you’re treated differently than everyone else and put you under high stress environments where you are competing for millions of dollars and see how well you can handle it.

    I can understand Venus being upset there were some close calls. I got a little ticked when Pam Shriver tried to defend the one that hit the chalk that flew up. Venus was only 18 with immense pressure on her, especially playing someone that has had this much experience and knows the pressures well, I don't think it's fair to hold this against her. And she mellowed out a lot and got more focused. I miss Jana so much, I can't believe she's gone, and yes one of the best net players ever, I agree. Watching these highlights is like going back in time and witnessing a significant change in tennis history. It marks the transition from the serve and volley type of game to the baseline and power game played by most women on the tour today. The two women have contrasting game styles. Jana plays a serve and volley type of game and doesn't even bother to play a flat backhand! She constantly uses a sliced backhand which leads to a low bounce on a grass court and puts pressure on the opponent. It is a breath of fresh air to see a female tennis player play like this. On the other hand, this game style is not very effective on other surfaces and with the courts being slowed down in recent years (so they say) this game style has become quite obsolete even on grass.
    Then again, Venus's power game nowadays has become the norm. When she first burst onto the scene she seemed to be able to sweep everyone aside with her raw power. However, with all the women having similar game styles these days, that surprise element is gone. This may be why she hasn't won a GS since 2008. I believe this lack of variety and depth is also why so many female tennis players have been winning GS in recent years and why it's so rare to see one dominating (excluding Serena Williams). It's difficult to identify a specific game style in most top players since they all play alike.
    One of my favourite players is Justine Henin. She was the perfect combination of old and modern.

      I don't know, it is possible she beats Hingis in the semis but I would still slightly favor Hingis. Venus did not get her first slam win over Hingis until 2000, even though she had many wins in 98-99 in smaller tournaments. The winner of that match would definitely beat Tauziat in the final, the only reason the Novotna- Tauziat final was close is Tauziat was the only one out of Hingis, Novotna, Venus who regularly tried to make Jana pass off the backhand side, which is something she was not comfortable at all doing. I think she didn't realise quite how formidable a player Jana was going into that match. Jana played beautifully.

    Yana's game was so similar to 80s and 70s players like navratilova and evert. Almost a serve and volley and slice game. I think that's why it took her a while to win. It was almost outdated with all the big hitters coming up.

    So unusual for Venus to lose her cool like that. She is normally so classy and subdued. I've always been a huge fan of hers. The calls were close... but not sure I'd say it was rampantly against her. What bothers me most is people trying to say this had anything to do with race. Give me a break... those balls were close and there were plenty of White folks getting bad close calls too that week. Great play from Jana, to be expected on her home court. Ironically, it would later become the home court of Venus. Both great champions.

    That ball Venus questioned was well in . I think she could’ve believe Novotna ability to get to her winners ( shots that would’ve been winners against everyone else) . Venus is young here and her maturity level is where it’s at because Novotna shots keep coming back. She’s 18 but her father taught her that the world would hate them and when things go against her in her mind then boom , my father was right. No one cares about her color. There isn’t a player on the tour that feels they haven’t gotten a bad call. Even though , here, Venus dint receive a bad call. I’m watching this on a very big screen and both in question touched the line. Now the call against Serena vs capriati at open was a true rip off, Serena hit a backhand down the line a foot inside the line and sideline that the umpire over ruled as out. That umpire lost her job forever.
