Parking garage a-hole story from a non-rider: you know they make those arms out of wood? I was in a garage with an unattended gate and the machine wouldn't read my ticket. The screen said "NOT READ - SWIPE CREDIT CARD" and let me tell you, I was unwilling to let them have my credit card info when I had no idea how much they were going to attempt to charge me. Given that another car had queued behind me and those the only way out was forward, I went forward. Pro-tip: you want to inch up to the gate until it just touches the A-pillar of your vehicle, and then drive through as you pick up just a little speed so the arm snaps off relatively cleanly. I'm told.

Guilty as charged! Just last night I went around the parking garage arm. Background: in a crowded part of town. No street parking available, found a garage. Pulled up to the gate to get my ticket…but my K1600 wasn’t big enough to trigger the ticket machine. I tried calling the attendant. No answer. I went around the arm with the intent to pay on the way out. Again, no attendant. I went to a machine and selected the “lost ticket” option …$20.50. Nope. I round out and around the gate arm. I had a BMW dealer replace the rear brake pads on my R1100RS as part of a state inspection. I when I picked up the bike, I asked to see the old pads (since I NEVER use the rear brake) - they told me they had thrown away the worn out pads. I told them there was no way I wore out a set of rear pads in 20K miles (since I NEVER use the rear brake). Forgive and forget is the cry of an A**hole. A person should never carry around the hate, anger of things that have happened to them or been done to them by anyone it is unhealthy. A person should forgive not the person but the action and move on from it for their own well being but that does not mean you have to have that person around you to do it again or to forget it happened and leave yourself open for someone else to do the same thing to you.

As an auto mechanic for over 20 years, shops are not required to hold old parts for a customer unless they request them prior to start of the work. It’s a bureau of auto repairs thing. That being said, I always made sure to hang on to the old parts just in case they wanted them back. Asking for the parts a few weeks later?…no chance. You can’t expect them to just hang on to it that long. The same day you pick it up and for the old parts? That’s a different issue. I think the powersports industry is lacking in oversight from something like the BAR / consumer affairs. Customers definitely need to communicate up front.

Hey, you never answered Samantha's questions, so I will.
    1) Clip-ons are handles used for steering attached directly to the forks (typically on a sport bike) as opposed to one long handlebar.
    2) The number of degrees on a crankshaft (as in 270 deg.) in this case refers to when the combustion strokes occur in relation to degrees of crankshaft rotation. It's one of many things that determine the characteristics of an engine.
    3) A slipper clutch allows for smooth gear downshifts in case your engine revs are not properly matched to the speed of the whole motorcycle. This prevents the rear wheel from locking up on you and increases safety.
    Hope this helps!

@revzilla on topic of going around parking gates, part of the issue here is the sensors (loops) that arm the gates. They may not pick up the motorcycle to pull a ticket, and because these loops also control the gate arm action, there is a risk of the gate arm coming down on a rider. That is the more probable reason for that attendant to direct the rider through the pedestrian walkway. And also why in that particular story, they are not the “A” hole.

im gonna blow your minds here - all of our parking garages here in singapore are built with motorcycles in mind, in one of 3 ways - first, my favourite, the arm doesn't clear the whole gap and there's a tiny motorcycle sized lane marked with paint that we're meant to use to access our (deserved) free parking (usually found at publicly funded infrastructure like sports stadiums, concert venues and rec centers), 2, there's a painted motorcycle detection zone in front of the arm that's specifically designed to pick you up (housing estates, shopping malls, business parks), or 3 (the shittiest version, often in only the fanciest shopping malls downtown) - there's just a big no motorcycles allowed sign out front.

Okay so the hospital near me has bike specific parking with a ramp off the footpath that leads straight to it, avoiding the pay for parking, and the ramp is easily accessible by tbe road, so i and everyone uses it and no one gets a ticket ever. Also, any public parking at shopping centres have let's say 3 hours of free parking and when you leave they read your front number plate with a camera and let you out or make you pay because you've been there too long, obviously that doesn't work foe a bike which doesn't have a front plate. So most places either have bike parking bypassing the boom gate anyway or the boom gate isn't full length so that a bike can get passed

I was actually taught to park on the sidewalk, coming from a hot region, the risk of a kickstand pushing through the asphalt and coming out to find the bike on its side. But, don't park in front of a door, emergency exit, handicap ramp etc. Be smart about it. If the parking lot has dedicated motorcycle parking (concrete) then park in the bike parking area. But even then, if a bike parks in a car spot when bike spots are available, as a facility manager, I have received complaints from that, but is it really different? How about when cars park in the bike spaces when it is snowing and winter, how about in the spring after snow melts, can a car park in a bike space year round? How about end of the parking row, they have stripped round areas that a car can't fit, but a bike does? People get too upset where bikes park to be sure...

The thing with parking is that, in many places, you need to leave the ticket "in" your vehicle as proof you've paid - especially parking meter on the street, but I encountered some parkin facilities with the same policy. How am I supposed to do this with a bike? Even if I had tape on me to secure the ticket, anybody could just take it. One of the situations where I feel persons responsible for traffic stuff often simply forget there are other vehicles than cars...

Regarding the question about the parking lot fees: there is an issue here in Romania. The automatic entrances do not detect motorcycles because there is no registration number in the front and because the motorcycles are too small. Also we do not have people at the entrance guarding it. Because of these reasons and the fact that the doors do not open for us, then we have to go around and park in a space which is not a car parking spot and also we do not pay for the parking. This is a corner case that I think is worth mentioning 😊
    Cheers!

Re parking on footpath - I don’t know what law is elsewhere, but in Victoria Australia you’re allowed to park on footpath as long as don’t block the path. Unless specifically marked. It absolutely saves parking spots for cars and I generally feel my bike is a little safer so I love that we can do it. That said, bikers who block the footpath or rev the crap out of their bikes on start up or leaving, they are a holes unquestionably

I guess I can weight in on the parts thing. As a career bike mechanic, I've run into this a few times and just developed a personal policy over time about it. Like you guys said, wear items like pads, chains, sprockets/cassettes, are assumed to be tossed unless they're just a swap to a different component and not necessarily waste. An exhaust I see as an item that is still completely usable and has value or may be something that needs to be re installed at some point. I think some fault lies with the shop in not offering it back, but it isn't reasonable for a customer to expect a service area to be a customer bullshit storage zone, especially for something heavy and ugly that takes up a bunch of space like an exhaust system, tires, handlebars, stuff like that. If days, even WEEKS have gone by, don't expect that to be held for you.

Also parking on sidewalks depending on where you live it might be ok, in my country if you leave at least 1.5m space on sidewalk, you can park your motorcycle.

I have never been there and we both had an excellent time, and Ill turn things back over to the gasholes lol! I learned that driver/rider aid lesson the hard way. My last car had blind spot detection, suffice it to say its no substitute for a head check. #1 If that were my brother would have found himself on the business end of a lawsuit. #2 Nope and you should have sued in small claims. #3 This will vary person to person but I'd say more than casual friends before just doing something like that. #4 Also no as you are not a guy in a circus. #5 I'd say you might be a bit of an AH for parking on the sidewalk but not in a space. #5A lil bit yeah, its called theft of service. #6 I'd say no, your ride your rules. Spurge all chaps are assless as they were originally designed for horseman to protect their pants and legs. I concur with Patrick that Spurge was not the AH in that instance. #7 I'd say Marcy is not but I dont think her husband is either. When it comes to riding with others I need to be able to trust their skills, their judgement, and for them to have very predictable behavior. I’m all for a quick pace through fun roads or being a goon and lifting either wheel when the situation allows for it but if I start seeing over cooked turns, ripping it in areas with side streets/parking lots, or passing in sketchy areas than I’m done. Group ride over. Solo I go yo.

From an European point of view, parking on the sidewalk is tollerated, as long as there is enough space for passerbys.
Parking garages here often have shorter "arms" so that bikes can pass beside them. It's acceptable not to pay as far as I know, especially as you do not take up a parking space.
In both cases it's normal to park on bicycle spaces, which is technically illegal, but ignored as there are not enough parking spaces anywhere and police knows that.

Many parking garages give you 15 minutes for free, incase you don't find a parking space. A quick run in and out would likely be free anyway. But, if you don't take a ticket, they usually charge you for 24 hours, or longer. Best to take the ticket and see if you can weasel out of it later.

Talking about Motorcycle Driver Assistance, remember that many of the cage "assistance" features became mandated. How long until lane centering and self driving are mandated on Monocycles? I'm 58, and have been riding over 40 years and I'd venture a guess that before another 40 years goes by powers that be will try and mandate all kinds of things that take driving out of the motorcyclist's power! They are already restricting power and noise in other countries to the point that those bikes are ending up here. In the late 70s the US Government tried to restrict Motorcycle noise. AMA was their to fight it. I'm excited about assistance that helps the rider, but a lot of times that goes from assistance to mandates.
I joined AMA to help keep our rights and mandates saine. Looking at AMA's last (100) year history they have a done a lot to keep motorcyclists and motorcycles clear from needless mandates. Think about joining if you are a lifelong motorcyclist. Cheers!
