I owned a 1978 Niki Lauda Edition Spider which I drove for around 10 years. Out of the 30 cars I've owned, the Alfa Spider Veloce was the most fun to drive. It seemed to have a soul of it's own and the driving experience of such a no frills car was almost like a religious experience. My favorite mode is the one you have with the boat tail. Cheers!
The car almost feels alive. Favorite car I ever owned. Mine was green too. 1967 1600cc. Had it 1980 -85. It was a great tine in life and timeless design. Ran and drove fantastic. Hard to beat for a pure driving experience. Great memories.
My dad had a 1967 Alfa GTV,1974 Alfa GTV 2000, 1972 Fiat Spyder, 1983 Fiat Brava, 1981 Fiat Spyder 2000 Turbo, 1982 Lancia Beta, 1981 Lancia Zagato and none of them had issues other than the Zagato over heated in the Phoenix AZ traffic. Of course nothing rusts in the desert. I currently own a 1986 Bertone x1/9 and a 1993 Toyota 4x4. Guess which one has had a blown head gasket and is rusty.
What's with all the negative comments? Jeez, lighten up 'car guys'! How would YOU do in a similar video, not too well is my guess! Nice car and nice owner, who has the balls to sit in front of the camera and share.
Radios make no sense in open sports cars. The “music” of such cars is the sweet sound of the engine. It will sing to you. It tells you how it’s running.
"badges?! we don't need any stinking badges!" = but that doesn't really matter. We know it is an Alfa and it looks great! I also like the green color + the story. Keith is certainly enjoying it, and that is all that matters. Glad we got to hear the story!
Watching this has given me the urge to get in my '68 912 and drive - I live in northern CT and like to go to western MA and drive it on the country roads there. Thanks for posting this - the Alfa's have always been one of my favorites.
you can get traditional looking radios with modern electronics from certain places. mate of mines got one that looks original with an 9mm jack and a usb in his porsche 356. looks great.
I would like the title logo "A Wide Open Spirit" on a T-shirt, and so does all of the videos' title logo on this channel. Love the design of them!!! Well done.
I love that TopGear like soundtrack playing in the background. ''I love nature...'' i hope the means the scenery, because you won't exactly help Nature driving a car that doesn't even have a cataliser.
Great video +Petrolicious (as always). Owning an Alfa Spider ('81) makes this an extra special tribute. Where was this filmed? Great Alfa roads!! Congrats to Keith Helmetag for maintaining her so well! "Yes I've been stranded on the side of the road, but not many times!" LOL! Likewise, but my favourite is when an Alfisti coincidentally comes to the rescue!
I had a girlfriend who had a simular car a bit newer it had been standing still for eight years i fixed it up to a good nice runner. My self i had ten Alfa Romeo so far
+Chestwards Alfa's from the 60's and 70's had it all. electrical problems, rust, etc. But the Alfa Romeo Spider isn't notorious for overheating. they still did though.
+firebird188 Nope, no such problem with 105s be they spiders, gtvs, giulias or Berlinas. Overheating isn't an issue. I have owned all apart from a spider (and mechanically its no different to the other models) over the past 39 years, and still have a Giulia 1300 TI. Don't know where you got that idea from. As for rust and electricals, sure but not really any worse than many other makes from the time.
+Chestwards I had a few similarly motorized Alfettas (the 1.8) and never experienced any overheating problem. Faulty electrics and that damn 2nd gear, yes, but the engines never failed actually. Pretty rock solid if you take time to warm up.
+Chestwards Yeah I could joke about the rust, but every old car has problems with rust. the fact that I joke about the overheating is that i went to an Italia-Concour last year. On the way to the Concour, I saw 2 giulia's standing on the side of the road with the hoods open and white smoke was coming out of the engine bays. that's the first thing that comes to my mind when I see an Old Alfa.
+Mortalomena ya i was a dealer fiat mechanic from 1969-1975 and none of the wiring was like the repair books .. they used what ever color they had on hand ... and always just enough no room for repair ...
Realise this is in fun, but I owned two Alfa GTV V6 24v's back to back and they required nothing but scheduled maintenance. The noise of that engine was something else too! Enjoyed this video.
Lovely looking car and I would love to drive it on those twisty mountain roads. Character and style and memories why ever sell ? I would agree not sure about the radio in the dash I would have removed that and just had a hidden small unit if anything. Thanks for sharing and nice work on the videos once again !
Love Alfas, but these are a little too dainty for my tastes. A 75 Evo, GTV or Spider with a sonorous Busso V6 or one of their touring car homologation editions for me thanks. That is why I bought my 155 V6 - then I could pretend I was in BTCC at every roundabout!
The Nardi wheel is perfect in this car, and I love the headlight covers. I'm a little disappointed by the CD player in the dash, but I understand the need for a more modern source of music.
Chris Kuers; to me they look like magnesium wheels from Cromodora. I have the same on my Alfetta GTV. Besides.....I think, they are a little too modern for a car from 1969. These wheels are more mid 70th. Same goes for the radio ..... being much too modern though. All in all a very fine car ! 👍

This is the kind of car I want Alfa Romeo to be building today. Simple, beautiful & wonderful.
Incredible car from the finest manufacturer in the world.
*second finest
:)
+Bavarian Banshee who's the first ?
+Bruno Miguel
Lancia.
For me are both, and Fiat also :D
Bruno Miguel :D
that shape... good lord. Incredible.
No amount of money can sway you from your beautiful car clocking miles on twisty roads and racking up precious memories.
the way he speaks im sure he was a surf/beach guy, like talking slowly and chill, cool guy :-)
These videos make me want to go out to my garage...
+XLPCX mfw my garage is literally 2x the size of my house haha
+ut2k4wikichici lucky!
+XLPCX Me too. Except I still don't own a car...
***** Someday!
HERE IN MY GARAAGE
What's with all the negative comments? Jeez, lighten up 'car guys'! How would YOU do in a similar video, not too well is my guess! Nice car and nice owner, who has the balls to sit in front of the camera and share.
lamonstra
Bravo!!
I am not a designer by trade but I am by heart and I agree with everything Mr Helmetag said. Thanks for the vid!
beautiful car but that modern radio is a punch in the face
Radios make no sense in open sports cars. The “music” of such cars is the sweet sound of the engine. It will sing to you. It tells you how it’s running.
That car is you sir. Congratulations. Totally approve the colour. Alfa Romeo "La meccanica delle emozioni"
Had a chance to own one very similar about 25 yrs ago. Settled on a 68 TR-250. Wished I owned both...
More of a work of art than a lot of "art" is.
Ahh '69 is such a great year. I have a '69 Giulia Ti 1300 in red and a '69 Fiat AC 124 sport (also red). Such wonderful cars from this era.
"badges?! we don't need any stinking badges!" = but that doesn't really matter. We know it is an Alfa and it looks great! I also like the green color + the story. Keith is certainly enjoying it, and that is all that matters. Glad we got to hear the story!
What a beautiful roadster! 🦅🦅🇺🇸
Watching this has given me the urge to get in my '68 912 and drive - I live in northern CT and like to go to western MA and drive it on the country roads there. Thanks for posting this - the Alfa's have always been one of my favorites.
The Alfa Romeo Spider, also known here in Italy as "Osso di seppia". My dad had the "restyling" model with the 2 liter engine
You're a lucky man Keith and I appreciate why you would never want to sell it. Some really wonderful touches made to an already stunning design.
One of the loveliest convertibles of all time
1980 alfa romeo spider, my dream car
"It's not easy being green..." Great looking car.
I appreciate all the Alfa love on petrolicious
wait, is he a designer?
+krodista lol i thought the exact same thing. Guy comes off as a bit of a douche, pretty full of himself
What a great looking Car, Thanks for sharing ,
Hot damn, I love that Alfa.
One beautiful car. I could really enjoy a car like that! 👌
I can hear those lovely throatie Webbers sounds and look the boom colour is different nice
It's an awesome car with an awesome color and an awesome owner, but that radio is just out of place.
My thoughts exactly.
+Matej Morgan I think the same^^ i really hate modern Stereos installed in a classic dash :(
you can get traditional looking radios with modern electronics from certain places. mate of mines got one that looks original with an 9mm jack and a usb in his porsche 356. looks great.
+Jack Shepherdson i know ;) I use a Blaupunkt Aspen in my 78 RR .... It's from the mid eighties but still proper working
sweet.
new petrolicious video = day gets 10x better
WONDERFUL...!
A beautiful car.
Beautiful car
PS: And that boat tail is gorgeous. Altho' personally I'd keep the twin headlights. Each to his own. 👍
that guy loves his car. enjoyed his story telling.
I would like the title logo "A Wide Open Spirit" on a T-shirt, and so does all of the videos' title logo on this channel. Love the design of them!!! Well done.
As the Top Gear saying goes, you aren't a real petrolhead unless you've owned an Alfa. This is a great example!
he must be a Landscape architect...?
+1 For the opening experimental typography! Your Designer is on point.
I love that TopGear like soundtrack playing in the background.
''I love nature...'' i hope the means the scenery, because you won't exactly help Nature driving a car that doesn't even have a cataliser.
Beautiful color-the best Spyder Alfa Romeo ever made. I would have personally kept the badges. Petrolicious thank you once again
Spider
The badges are on the right place.
Michel QV the owner stated he removed the badges
I don't care how much success you have, you deserve more.
Wonderful car, cool owner. What is the cool jazz music in the background please?Thank you for the nice vids anyway
A friend of mine bought a gen.3 Alfa Spider as a running fixer upper. He`s crazy now
Love the smooth lines of the body! The back looks amazing :)
Great car, fantastic you are living what so many dream about.
Great car and video
This is one of those cars that NHTSA regulations just ruined. From the streamlined headlamp covers to the horrendous enlarged bumpers.
I like the streamlined headlights...reminds me of e types
The car looks great.
keep cruising that beautiful thing!
Very nice review. Thank you.
I had a girlfriend who had a simular car a bit newer it had been standing still for eight years i fixed it up to a good nice runner. My self i had ten Alfa Romeo so far
This is the same car Dustin Hoffman drove in the movie "The graduate." His was a '67.
Ahh the Alfa Romeo Spider. The car for the men who wants to drive automotive perfection in style... for 30 minutes before it overheats.
+Chestwards Alfa's from the 60's and 70's had it all. electrical problems, rust, etc. But the Alfa Romeo Spider isn't notorious for overheating. they still did though.
+Chestwards get your head out of your ass every once in a while man.
+firebird188 Nope, no such problem with 105s be they spiders, gtvs, giulias or Berlinas. Overheating isn't an issue. Beautiful Ride. I've got a '73 Spider myself
My love for Alfa went out of the window when I tried to hunt down some electrical problems from them.
+Mortalomena ya i was a dealer fiat mechanic from 1969-1975 and none of the wiring was like the repair books .. they used what ever color they had on hand ... and always just enough no room for repair ...
+Mortalomena Spede beard :D
Makedeth master trole :D
Keith, buddy, How about we stay on our side of the road in blind turns, OK?
Just a friendly thought from the guy coming the other way on a motorcycle.
Alfa, flick the indicator switch and your toilet flushes back home : )
+1
Realise this is in fun, but I owned two Alfa GTV V6 24v's back to back and they required nothing but scheduled maintenance. The noise of that engine was something else too! Enjoyed this video.
Alfa romeo is the greatest company we own one of these and and a giulia saloon
What gorgeous vehicle. Do you think that Petrolicious will be doing a Fiat x1/9?
poetry in motion
Fantastic video as always :)
Not one of my favourite Alfa's but nice video none the less.
Love it! I had a 73 spider
Beautiful car!
chrome emblems are sweet and those foggy lens are looking like Ferrari wantabee
Dodge Hemi ; they are original though - here in Europe. They were not allowed in the US. Due to light reflexions
The perfect road for driving.
Getting ice cream with the family... In a Spider... Ok
The kayak's of motor sports. Narrow beautiful the earlier the better
Lovely looking car and I would love to drive it on those twisty mountain roads. Character and style and memories why ever sell ?
I would agree not sure about the radio in the dash I would have removed that and just had a hidden small unit if anything.
Thanks for sharing and nice work on the videos once again !
the dashboard is very '60's ........except for that cd player....but what a great car
As a designer, I design designs, so I designed a design to pay homage to the design as it was originally designed
Sublime!
Alfa planned to put a rotary in it. So a 13 b turbo swap is legit. Let's say make it a beast with 500 hp ? UUUUÄÄÄÄHH!!!!
They aren't much alike, but this video reminds me of my TR6, probably because of the ways the owner talked about it.
124 fiat spider needs to be done
Marelli Electrics makes Lucas electrics a "reliable" smart choice.
Beautiful car and great video! On what road was this video recorded?
Nice wheels.
Those alloy wheels are from a later model.
I had a Giulia spider - the fuel tank got corroded by rust, Alfa Romeo had no thanks to replace the original.
That's a nice miata.
+Chestwards Yeah, I think the "Alfa Romeo" is Mazda's new brand for the Italian market.
+Chestwards Spyder =drop top w/2 seats.
i.e. Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder
+_踊り Alfa was born in 1910, Mazda in 1920. Don't be in confusion and don't mix diamonds with glasses.
Tiziano Palumbo I am not mixing diamonds with glasses mate, I am mixing diamonds with diamonds :).
CD player/radio on the dashboard doesn't really match his interior. I would just keep original radio. Otherwise, nice alfa!
Hey look, another Petrolicious piece over an Alfa; how original...
"I'm an eccentric" woah there buddy don't break your hip.
...and the winner is...
...and the winner is...

Grazie per ì.
Beutyful car, I'd love to own one myself
Good looking car? Great roads too?
anyone know the music?
Just stumbled upon your video- great car do you still have and may I converse with you? Thank you
The front lamp reminds me of the ferrari gto.
beautiful car, I know how you feel about not wanting to sell. I've had my m3 for 5 years, and it would be extremely hard to part with it.
Delortos or Webbers? I took the leaking Spica injection pump off my 2000 GTV an put Delortos om easy conversion. Would love a boat tail spyder.
Designer who put a radio from k-mart into his car... 😂
the two best car companies that Fiat killed. Alfa Romeo and Lancia.
They are back
*1969. The radio plays vinyl 45s.*
