    This song brings to mind this very famous quote.
    “Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
    Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
    Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
    Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?” - Epicurus

      In Christianity's context, Yahweh gave men free will hence evil can be committed on Earth as all humans are sinner. Hence answering to your question "Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? " If he interferes with worldly affairs humans no longer have free will. Put it this way, he is willing to watch humans harm our counterparts but not willing to interfere as it will be taking our freedom to choose between good and evil away.

      zhen yu But you're making a pretty big assumption there that free will even exists. If it doesn't, then the defense that it would be interfering with our supposed free will doesn't hold up. And if a god doesn't exist, then why do we think all the other fun supernatural trappings like free will exist? It seems like to the neutral third party observer that free will was thought up to provide the perfect defense mechanism to not allow the brain to discover the possibility that a god simply doesn't exist. Each time we get close to figuring it out, humans import something new to create the lie our brains are most willing to believe.

    For all those people who think this song is about beliving in god.
    This is a cover, I believe XTC made it. This is apperently actual words they've said about the song "it failed in part, because it wasn't as caustic as I would've liked it to be. It should've been a nail in throat of the public, but instead some took it as a declaration of faith when I wanted to make it clear that I don't believe in God - and that even if there is a He or a She they have nothing to do with organized religion." So there you have it, It's about not beliving in god. Or at least having a harsh view on religion today. Basically the song is atheist agnostic.

    The whole song feels like a journey. 3:27 to the end is my favorite part and is amazingly suited to the previous lyrics. It makes me feel just how I did in my short but huge momment of tears and anger, when it finally clicked and I mentally + emotionally decleared to myself that I had lost faith in this religion (Islam) that I had spent my whole life dedicated to. The rage, frustration and hurt are blended together so perfectly. But at the same time it felt like being born again, being born into reality and/or finally having a thick sheet torn away from your eyes. It's incredibly beautiful, and I am extremely greatful for this piece of work.

      I am a Christian, but I also like it. I grew up in a very toxic religious situation and became more agnostic in college especially while grappling with the question of theodicy. I obviously returned to my faith (not to the same tradition and a lot more open-minded), and of course I struggle with doubt especially with all the suffering I see and have experienced myself. So I empathize strongly with the sentiment of this song, and definitely go thru periods like this still. It definitely can be and probably is (tho I don't know the artist) an atheist writing the song, but I can also imagine a religious person angry at the injustices of the world and yelling at God or someone who wants to believe but feels they can't because of the question of why suffering happens.

    • @SaberRiryi
      @SaberRiryi Před 2 lety

      @@evandugas7888 Atheists are far more diverse than that. Just like any large group of people. There are atheists like myself for example, who were raised Christian. Held the beliefs firmly, had no problems with any of it even into adulthood. Loved the god we thought existed, prayed daily, etc. But then discovered people who didn't believe and began studying and listening to philosophers that also don't believe. Began listening to arguments for and against. And now personally, no matter how much I might like to believe in a benevolent creator.. I can't force myself given what I've learned. Those people like myself, while ex-Christian... don't hate god anymore than we hate big foot. Hard to hate something you don't believe exists in the first place. I feel fortunate to have taken this path though, because it means I've kind of lived on both sides of the believing/non-believing fence. I can more readily empathize with believers and listen to them with compassion. Which honestly I think is useful given how frequently polarized things become.

    There are some interesting comments here I agree with, but haven't seen one explaining something like this; Maybe there is a God. But what this song is trying to explain (in my opinion) is that this God, is not the God portraited in any religion. Religion is an invention of man. Maybe he exists, but not the way you think. Think about it like this, he created a seed and that's it. He planted it, took care of it as it grew, watered it until it grew into a tree. From that point there's no need to take constant care of it. He loves the tree, but that was the fruit of his creation, the whole tree. He is not taking care of every single branch, every single leave, every single cell or every single atom of this tree. He is taking care of the tree as a whole. So maybe we are not even the quarks of the atoms of this tree. That would explain why there is hunger, death, and other mallices in the world and why He doesn't "acts". It's because He is just not taking care of that particular little atom where all of this is happening..
    Or if you'd like, think about Him as a watchmaker. He created the watch, all its tiny pieces and made it work. Once it started ticking, that's it. It's working. Now he just leave it there to work by itself. Sure if some little piece stop working he can make an intervention on it and fix it, but he made the watch so it can function by itself. He is not moving the clock hands by Himself.

    I love the original XTC version but have to credit this atmospheric version, they have really done something different with it. The original has a bridge which modulates to a major key which the arranger here as avoided (understandably, it would have ruined the scary vibe). Still, I hope XTC have received good royalty payment for this. They deserve it!

    Love this cover, but it cuts quite a bit out from XTC's original bridge. Here's the missing lyrics, starting after the third verse:
    I won't believe in heaven or hell
    No saints, no sinners, no devil as well
    No pearly gates, no thorny crown
    You're always letting us humans down
    The wars you bring, the babes you drown
    Those lost at sea and never found
    And it's the same the whole world 'round
    The hurt I see helps to compound

    To me, this song talks about a person that used to believe in God, but got disappointed with all the silence for too long and thought God had abandoned them. I feel it because I were in this situation far more than once, but I never lost my hope. Nor I will.

    • @troy6646
      @troy6646 Před 6 lety +3

      Friendly Engineer well even if you ignore the fact that god "was silent" there's still not really any solid evidence that points to "only god" as a conclusion, then they'd the fact the bible is flawed, and that ppl of the same religion can't agree on the same thing and that god as a character(and person) doesn't make sense so...while some are able to convince themselves that everything is god, some don't wanna keep lying to their selves. plus it's annoying that wherever any good thing happens "thank God" byt wherever a bad thing happens "oh, it's not gods fault"

    • @guilhermeroyama8842
      @guilhermeroyama8842 Před 6 lety +1

      bearer of bad news(troy) God became an icon of hope to most of humanity. And that is actually a good thing until people start killing each other over it. I'm an agnostic theist, I believe in God even though my point of view is not a part of any religion. As you mentioned, some people view God as the whole cosmos, not a person that can be defined in some few words like the Bible does. That is basically exactly how I see him. And the fact that people thank God for everything but do not blame him for when something bad happens partly comes from the "black and white" human ideology. Even though nature itself is completely neutral, we like to have idealistic points of view like Good and evil, Law and Chaos, while in the end, if not for one, the other would have never existed. Who are we to say what is wrong and what is right? Why my society's morals are right and the others are all wrong? Am I better than them? Friedrich Nietzsche wrote about these questions often and in a time when society was mostly ruled by dogmas. Humanity always feels the need to find heroes and villains to their causes but in the end we find none. So, we invent them. Simple as that.

    • @troy6646
      @troy6646 Před 6 lety +2

      Friendly Engineer yeah pretty much. I don't Mind god being a symbol of hope, that's great but as you said, people get a little carried away. personally I don't see a reason to believe he exist. but if he does I doubt he's like the bible says and I wouldn't mind if he were real. but everyone sees the world differently and you can't really do much about that.

    This song isn't about anti-god or atheism, it's the exact opposite. The singer prays to God to put blame on him but by doing so, he/she already acknowledges the existence of God. It's like an oxymoron. "Dear God" and "I don't believe in you" are contradictory and it shows the singer's struggle to understand God's apathy towards humanity but at the same time still needs Him. It's a clever song to describe the constant see-saw battle between our logical sense and emotional needs. We blame God for what happens but in face of desparation, we still go looking for God because we're powerless over what we can't control.

    • @mrmvpvip
      @mrmvpvip Před 7 lety +10

      JAD's MV's If she thinks "prayers don't work", then why does she actually pray to tell God about that? Notice there's a line saying "I know that ain't true and so do you", implying the singer knows that God isn't what the Holy books described Him as. The singer stop believing in the interpretation of God from humans, not God Himself.

    • @HimanshuRohela
      @HimanshuRohela Před 6 lety +4

      It is about being agnostic and then complaining to him of World Problems. Most people stupidly call themselves to be Atheist but in actuality they are usually agnostic.

    • @tinabrandt1571
      @tinabrandt1571 Před 6 lety +8

      You seem to use the terms wrong yourself. Being agnostic means not KNOWING whether there is a god; being atheist means not BELIEVING in a god. Knowledge and Belief are not the same thing. The terms Atheism and Agnosticism are not mutually exclusive, and in fact often go hand in hand. By not believing in a god (atheist), you are acknowledging not knowing there is one (agnostic). By claiming to be agnostic, you are saying you do not know there is a god, which doesn't directly rule out belief in one, but most theists falsely equate belief with knowledge, and would not acknowledge that they do not know whether there is a god, meaning most who claim to be agnostic are also atheists. In truth, all people are inherently agnostic, because nobody has factual scientific evidence of the existence of a god, as well as no one having the ability to prove that there isn't one, and everyone is by default BORN atheist, because beliefs are not hardwired biologically but learned and developed during life.

    • @tinabrandt1571
      @tinabrandt1571 Před 6 lety +4

      People will take different meanings from a song, not always the same one and certainly not always the meaning intended by the artist, but that doesn't necessarily make those interpretations invalid. My personal interpretation of this song has always been a mockery of prayer and religious ceremony, taking the moment to criticize the concept of Abrahamic theism, its origin as a HUMAN concept, and how, if god did exist, he would be one not deserving of prayer, because he does not answer them.
