How to Ride the Subway in Los Angeles

- Everything you need to know to ride the Subway in LA! Most people aren't even aware that Los Angeles has a subway, but it does! And it's a pretty good subway too! Well... provided it goes where you want to go. LA doesn't have a very large Subway network, but where it does run it is clean, efficient, and pretty cheap to ride.

Yellow Productions Mention that a day pass is only $7, and a Metrolink ticket is good for Metro and much more. An ML roundtrip ticket is also an all-day ticket on LA Metro and more.
My real question is, how do people get reduced disability Los Angeles metro card? How much a reduced disability MetroCard cost? Because that’s going to be similar to New York.
i have been to LA before also and will go again ..so i am interested in knowing cheap stays over there ..which are near to all attractions
As a new yorker I can say that the stations are indeed clean and beautiful. Even the trains are clean, though the lighting is poor.
Nuper In Nocte they are not clean lol
@@californiamade5608 Compared to mta stations and trains? They are most certainly clean.
1:07 She didn’t TAP!
She didn't have to, but she did have to just so they can know how many people are taking the A and E Line. Those tap machines there don't charge you if you you already paid for the B Line or the station entrance
This video should be shown on a monitor at each subway station in LA because there is no simple instructions at the stations.
They should also have monitors explaining the Fly-Away Buses to LAX.
Thanks! :)
LA's subway may not be too extensive but people forget that LA DOES have a very extensive light rail, some of which runs underground like a subway. Don't discount the light rail!
+RedLight GreenArrow Good point!
RedLight GreenArrow Do those two systems connect with each other, and can you use the same TAP card?
Lucy Foster Buses, trains, and light rail all interconnect and use the same card & fare.
As a person who lives in the LA area both light rail and subway use a tap card so do all the major bus
Errin Thank you!
The world needs people like you
I'm going to LA in a few weeks and have been super nervous about how to get around without crazy Uber fees and spending tons of time in traffic, as well as what to go see, and where to eat. A lot of your videos have been super helpful. Thank you!
How did it go?
I really like your positive attitude! Makes it seem like such a simple and fun thing to do. :)
As opposed to some of the people you have to deal with on those subways.
Why don't locals use the underground? There is so much traffic and traffic jams in LA which could be reduced by using the underground system.
+Tranefine Good question! :)
Tranefine there are a lot reasons why locals don't ride the Metro system. The biggest reason is the rail stations are not located near where most people live or work. So getting to a rail station requires riding a bus for the first and last leg of ones journey- assuming there is even a bus line near where one lives!. Also the buses and trains do not run all day and most bus lines have wildly infrequent schedules. Also buses are subject to LA traffic. Another big reason is LA is a very spread out city, so getting to ones destination will most likely take multiple time consuming transfers. Taking public transportation in LA will most of the time take 2-3 times longer than if you were to drive your car. Public transit in LA is great for short trips but awful for longer trips and given the spread out nature of LA, most people would be using Metro for longer trips which isn't worth the hassle of riding the metro.
Ryan ThemePark Exactly. L.A. is just simply too flawed in terms of infrastructure. If L.A. kept its streetcars. If would probably improve public transportation.
JRT Unfortunately all those streetcars were replaced with highways and now we have traffic in LA all days.
Sprawl is the reason. It's not feasible for govt how rich it might be to construct a metro to where people actually live when the density so little. Trams might be a right balance but LA is too big to travel using trams.
As a non car drive living in LA for 3 decades, I agree ridriding train is easy because there are not many choices anyway. Transfer buses because there are not many anyway. Except Downtown LA, finding the bus stop n station is always easy because lack of choices
I have came to downtown LA all the time, I always have trouble finding bus stop or train station. Funny the train system is very simple. I always catch train at union station.
In your video, I notice there are no one in the train. I say it is very normal because LA does go anywhere
I used to take goldline to Pasadena every weekend up till 2007. It was empty. Then I rode again in 2011 during weekdays, ok it was crowded.
Red line is always crowd
Blue line is crowd during rush hour. I rode 20 years ago during lunch time.
I took Green oine to Downey's 6 years ago in the early morning. It was crowd, but everyone got seat n there were some empty seats.
I took Expo on the first week. It was all empty.
Just MTA proud said people can get seats because not many people take. RED LINE is different because you don't need CD bars once you get out Red oine stations.
Most require cars.
During rush hour, the train is pack. Even with that it is sardine fish crowd. I had to catch infrequent buses to take green line. For car drivers, by the they reach train station, they may as well driver further.
Oh in La, there bus riders vs train riders. You don't hear that in Japan , Taiwan, Euope. Not even DC NY, SF.
the reasons it is do inconvenience for non car drivers to catch trains. For example, Expo stopped at USC, Google map advice CD ed taking buses. I did additional research, its faster to take buses.
Even people working along red line don't know about train. I got couple interview near red stations. The HR told me they don't parking. I said I take train. They didn't know it. 2 minutes later, they checked Google map n saidafter get out ssd's ts th in just walk couple hundred feet. Despite bad traffic in LA, people still drive n don't bother to figure the public transit.
I end taking bus because it is easier.
In La, never say you take bus during interview. You automatically disqualify job. Taking train is ok because people ass6 you have dars
Thanks for the extra detailed tips!
The name of the subway is not Metro. LA Metro is the collective name for the entire system of buses and trains in its net work. When we locals talk about using Metro we're collectively talking about the subway, bus and Light Rail lines.
+Derik De Baun Thanks for the clarification :)
This was awesome!! Thank you for this video
Very informative and helpful.
nice presentation... thank you for your help!
Great into to the Metro which I will be using exclusively when I stay in WeHo later this year.
Thanks MD!
Great video. This helped a lot!
My pleasure Alex!
I didn’t know LA have a Subway! Thank You for this Video. I’m leaving Jakarta to LA this September for 5 Months. This helped me a lot because I just want to avoid using Taxi to go around LA lol
Awesome! Enjoy Elfin!
There's NOTHING wrong with L.A's taxis.
You’ll most likely end up using a taxi. As the metro is limited.
@@Gemashke No there's nothing wrong with Taxis in L.A. , but it does sdd up and very quickly to go fron LAX to Long Beach or LAX to the west side same thing with taking Lyft and Uber. So it's cheaper to either rent a car or take public transportation.
Does these tap cards good for transfering from rail to bus for a week pass? And when is the last metro rain run at night? I need to drop off my rental car before midnight in downtown, then take the metro rail back to Melrose ave..
great tips, thanks
Thanks Shane!
I think you should also make a video for how to ride the BART, Caltrain, Muni in SF and other
transit systems as someone who lives in the Bay Area
Thank you so much for the info. Helped me a lot to plan the trip to LA
My pleasure Mackenzie! Enjoy your trip!
i have watched your other videos too !!!
My lay out is... i figured i can take a 20 min bus ride to my hotel in inglewood from LAX...but from the hotel I want to go to santa monica pier and the hollywood highland center...possibly down to manhattan beach area too. Would you say I would be better off using the metro or doing a Lyft or Uber since I will not be renting a car???
This video is really very helpful .. visiting LA next month . Hope everything goes well.. still scared a bit bcoz my mom is physically disabled n I just hope she doesn't have to walk a lot .
I'm sure you'll find plenty to do with your Mom!
Hi Chris
Just a suggestion, with the extensions of the Blue (A to Azuza} and Expo (E to Pasadena replacing the Gold line) line, opening of the Crenshaw -LAX(K) line last year and the opening of the Automatic People Mover which the K line will link up to next year, and the regional Connector, would you consider doing an updated series on the LA Metro system? Of course a large part of all of the extensions and opening pf new lines extc is due to the city gearing up for both the 2026 FIFA World cup and the 2028 Summer Olympic games? Just asking.
Hi Danielle. Yes. I'll add it to my video idea list 😀
wow You like your video about LA Subway . I never been to LA Subway in Downtown Los Angeles @ Yellow Productions .
+Eric Chiu Thanks Eric :)
WOW! The METRO works similar to CALTrain and BART System in San Francisco and the Bay Area
Misael Maritnez Exactly what i was thinking! Metro subway is like Bart, Metrolink is like Caltrain, and Metrorail is like Muni in the Bay Area. That's crazy, never knew LA had a similar system as the Bay.
Hello Adi yup. I agree. San Francisco’s is way more efficient though and used more.
Both Metro and Metrolink are fair based not mile based systems.
love the video i am a train spotter and the video is very informativs
+Aw Clement Thanks Aw Clement!
I used it when I took metro from my hotel in downy California to universal Hollywood
Hi, there! Great video, thank you for posting it!
When you were in L.A., did you find that bikes were allowed on the subway? I've been trying to find out online somewhere, but no luck yet.
By the way, great tip on the bathrooms! That's never important until it's REALLY important, haha! :D
+Zora A My pleasure. Yes.. bikes are allowed on all LA Metro trains. Subway or above ground.
lots of people bring their bike to the subway.
It looks empty but very clean compared to NYC Subway lol
what happens if you use your tap card in a bus, but it doesnt have enough for the fee? can you pay the rest of it with money?
Broo we need this in NYC
Can I use the app in my smartphone? Hoy good does it work?
Can those same cards be used on the bus too?
Hi thanks for th video. Can get those cards at lax?
Not at LAX Airport itself. But you can at the closest metro station Aviation/LAX on the Green line
How’s the Red Line up to North Hollywood, is it sketchy at all??
It is 100% fine. It is loaded with commuters and tourists. Some of the stations are interesting too.
Oh iyaa.. If i will going by bus, tap to go " in " and tap to go "off" also??
Certainly I'll go by subway in LA to lots of places...it's really similar with trains we have here in São Paulo Brazil! One question: do we pay again If change the train line (ex: change red to purple)? Thanks!
Yes... you can transfer lines within 2 hours of first "tapping in" -- this is what LA metro's website says about it in more detail "To use the free two hour transfers, single fare riders will need to use a pre-loaded TAP card. When the card is tapped at the first boarding, the two hour transfer period begins and transfers will be allowed from one Metro line to another Metro line. Riders must still tap their cards at each subsequent boarding and the TAP card system will recognize if the user is within the two hour transfer window. Riders will be able to transfer an unlimited number of times from one Metro bus or rail line to another within the two hour time frame. For example, a passenger could transfer from the Metro Gold Line to the Metro Red Line and then to the Metro Expo Line all on one fare."
@@YellowProductions wow, great! This way I'm pretty sure that my decision of not renting a car it'll work during the 4 days I'll stay in LA. Thank you!! Success for you and your useful YT Channel!
thanx alot buddy traveling to LA in 2 weeks and im on a budget 😂
Nice!
How did it work out?
I enjoyed your video. It would be helpful if someone made a in-depth video explaining how to ride the subway/light rail in a wheelchair. I am going to visit LA at the end of summer(2018)and would like to see a video of something beside just the trains or stations.
Thanks Robert! Not sure I'll be back on the LA Subway anytime soon to make that video. The LA Subway is pretty new so I would imagine everything should be wheelchair accessible
Helpful and informative. Will be using the metro to get about when we are on holiday next month from Scotland. 🏴🇬🇧 So many places to visit and cheaper than Uber’s everywhere!
How did it go?
@@jamesparson ..didn't get the metro....got uber everywhere..lol! Hoping to visit in 2022 so will try again then!!
Stuart Miller Hopefully travel will be normal by then
Most of what you said is accurate. I do not find the trains or stations clean at all. I ride the trains about two times a week and find a lot of trash. Since I have a grabber to pick up recyclables, I also help them out by putting some the garbage in receptacles.
Thanks for that perspective Keith. I made this video when the subway was much newer. I agree the cleanliness has fallen off
The LA subway system looks very efficient, and it looks easy to use! Thanks for the video!
+Scottman895 Travel It is pretty good.. IF it goes where you want. That's the big IF :)
I'll keep that in mind IF I decide to use it, lol.
Scottman895 Travel again they do have a very extensive light rail system. Subway may not go far but light rail goes a lot of places.
Metro is the whole system...subway, light rail, BRT and buses. So it's an error to say IF it goes where you want, because the whole system does cover the entire area.
Thank you so so so much! im traveling to L.A next year
My pleasure Jan! I hope you enjoy your trip to LA!
do tell me over here in one line ...how can we reach to universl studios hollywood , walk of fmae and disneyland using a metro !!! Thanks
Hi Rakesh... LA Subway goes to Universal and Hollywood. It does NOT go to Disneyland
@@YellowProductions any cheap way of reaching disneyland other than bus !!!
Is there any tip to San Francisco - LA car travel ?
There's the "fast" route down the Interstate 5 freeway. It the scenic route along the coast via the 101 and the 1. If you've never driven the coast route I'd suggest that. Its beautiful. Note that the 1 is closed at Big Sur due to land slides.
thanks
My pleasure Odin!
Does this metro actually get you anywhere besides downtown? From what I've seen, everyone in LA lives in a random suburban sprawl with no transit in sight.
You can take it from Downtown LA to the beach in Santa Monica

@@Loangles right?? Like what’s the need??
I want to explore downtown LA coming from Downey. I want to use public transport only. Where are the best areas to get the most out of on a visit to downtown LA using the subway? Don’t want to be travelling around all day but travel to best areas and explore by foot
You can do all the stuff in this video just by walking around: czcams.com/video/xUWwBi_mGdk/video.html
Yellow Productions great. Thanks for reply
L.A.'s subways are surprisingly delightful.
is it safe now?
Do I go up a level or down a level if I’m transferring from blue line to red line? Also, are there elevators, because I’ll be taking my bicycle (: thanks in advance to anyone who chimes in!
You would go up a level if you're transferring from the red to the blue and down a level if you're transferring from the blue to the red. But pay close attention cause the purple line rides on the same track as the red line, they go in the same direction but they split eventually.
Lol, last time I was in LA, we purchased tickets from the machine and had to keep them visible at all times for inspectors or transit police to see when they walked about the train. I think that was back in 2004.
+Ken Dufresne I think it's a little bit better now :)
Is there a station close by the Westin on S. Figueroa St.
The Pershing Square Subway stop is about 4 blocks from the Westin
@@YellowProductions thank you so much for the reply and help.
could you do your house tour video ? :)

How about the train. Is it a lot longer a?
There are 2 types of trains in LA. Amtrak, the US national rail, and Metrolink, the LA commuter rail. Amtrak is good for long distances, like going from LA to San Diego. Metrolink isn't really good for tourists due to the infrequent schedule
you are the best
Awww... thanks Sebastian!
will it be safe enough riding the subway for me and my teen as we travel from our residing near the lax to the hollywood area
Hmm.. that will be a really long metro ride. 90 minutes at least from Aviation LAX station to Hollywood and 2 transfers. I wouldn't want to do that ride
That is a long trip. LAX is really not near Hollywood.
no
Is it a long trip from LAX to Griffith Park?
LAX to Griffith Park is 19 miles. Which could be 30-90 minutes driving depending upon traffic
how do you get from LAX to the subway? Is it connected directly?
Hah! You'd think it would be right? LAX is connected to nothing. If you are going to downtown LA you can take the "LAX Flyaway" bus
The Flyaway bus is with a pass, right? Where exactly can I buy one? I'm going to travel alone so the more I know, the better
@@darlenesantana6759 why dont you research yourself!!!
Does the subway go from l/a airport to downtown thanks
No.. not yet. It is under construction. Right now your best option is to take the "LAX Flyaway" bus to Union Station in downtown LA
No it does not but there is an extension that willis going to open up in 2021 that will take you to the airport. I am not a person that speaks for metro but if you want more information go to Metro.net.
If i buy day pass a tap card for one day,,, i need/i must tap the card if exit?
Yes
@@YellowProductions thanks a lot...
The LA Subway is one of a very short list of places outside banks where you can get your hands on $1 coins - get them from ticket machines.
+Anthony Kernich Good tip! I like dollar coins.. fun to spend!
On this list are also vending machines at Calstate LA and Santa Monica College.
The Boston Subway does the same.
Anthony Kernich also, the self car wash...
That’s not bad $1 for a TAP Card in the Subway in Los Angeles that’s better than paying $2.75 for a Regular MetroCard in New York.
Can you get to the theme parks such as Disneyland and universal studios via the subway?
Universal Studios yes. There is a subway stop right in front. Disneyland.. no
Yellow Productions Disneyland is actually located in Anaheim, Orange County so it’s in a different city
In theory one could ride 460 bus. And even though it uses freeways, it is slow. And there is freeway construction, so it is on detour so it is even slower.
Thank you. By the way.
My pleasure!
does this subway running 24/7
Nope. Generally it runs 5am to midnight... up until 2am on Friday/Saturday
Delhi metro is still, even though it's crowded

Hey subway, metro, bus n public transportation in Los Angeles all in one card???
Yup!
@@YellowProductions thanks a lot of your information..
Ohw one question again.. In San Francisco the same?? Like LA? All in one card public transportation???
Different card in SF than LA. In SF its called the "Clipper" card.. but yes..that one card will work for all public transit in the SF Bay area.
I have to learn this if I’m visiting la for the first time. No rental car btw 😂
Enjoy LA!
@@bernz23 why not?
How did it work out?
the subway needs to be expanded to go to tijuana and riverside. destinations should include all local universities, disneyland, all theme parks, hollywood, san diego marine world, and san diego zoo.
Jarrod Yuki do you even know how far san diego is from LA
Metrolink goes to Riverside already.
Tijuana? are you nuts it is over 140 miles (260km) away. And the border crossing is slow.
@@jamesparson manifest destiny.
lol it's so empty, do LA residences aware that they HAVE a subway system?
They must. They voted for the taxes to pay for the expansion.
Los Angeles is such a large city very much spread out in so many directions , that is why cars are still the preferred method of transportation. There are so many freeways all over the Metro area so you can drive just about anywhere you want to go . But yea, the Sub Way in LA is very nice modern and clean.
I used it the other day
And what'd you think?
@@YellowProductions I can't wait for the purple line expansion to be finished. I use them anytime I travel out there
A lot better than the train or subway system of NYC which looks more like an old coal mine to me. The most perfect or excellent subway systems are those in Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo, Singapore, Shanghai and Beijing.
Wrong, London Underground is the greatest metro system in the world...
@@charliewright4044 Wrong Brit, been to London, Asia, and live in America. And Asian countries like China and Japan have a WAY better transit system by far. Literally incomparable.
Holy shit I am 43 years old and have visited LA since I was a kid and I had no idea!!!! Seriously!
I believe you! :)
La only got subway 25 years ago, so when you went there as a kid, it probably didn’t exist back then
Wtf.....? How have I never heard about this?
Hey, LA has a subway
old and beautiful
Not a lot of people call it the Subway in Los Angeles.
I'm going to risk riding the dirty ass blue line tomorrow!
wish my luck.
Good luck!
thanks Ill need it lmao
Just checking in... are you still alive? :)
boi he ded
Is this the one that goes to Santa Monica?
lol he said they are clean hahaha
They are
Jesus, the Boston metro is more complicated then this
los angeles train stations are cleaner than new york city subways
Specially bed bugs not recommend riding the bus ride a bike
How is the subway so clean but the streets are dirty
the blue line and red line are the weirdest trains to ride, dirty and have loonies on them, others playing loud music, some meth or weed smoking, it's an experience. and why doesn't LA metro have public bathrooms? so uncivilized.
I've lived in California for 20 years and I never knew Los Angeles had a Subway wtf
Hah! Glad I could share something new :)
What part of California?
Ive been to LA without using a car and i can say that there are many LA neighborhoods where subways and trains are easily accessible...Not as good as cities like NY or Chicago but enough public transit where a car is not needed. But the key is, you have to pick the right area to stay in..And there are PLENTY...Not just the down town area of the city...From what I understand, many more expansions and train lines are being constructed as we speak and in the next 5 to 10 years, MOST of the city will have access to trains....I cant help but to laugh at the morons that claim that "You NEED a Car to Live in LA"......These people either have never used public transit or are smoking that good sh*t
> It is clean
The hundreds of people I've encountered smoking weed, fighting, passed out drunk/high, begging for money and selling things in the subway cars would say otherwise. I swear there are a total of 3 cops who patrol the entire system. The emergency intercoms don't even work - guess how I know.
I think that's by comparison. I've heard that even w/ all that, it's still a lot cleaner than NYC rail. They have rat infestations and decades of grime.
What line did you ride? A Line (aka Blue Line)?
LA obviously went around the world first and took all the best ideas before building their subway system. NYC just did what they wanted.
Hmmm? How?
@@MariaDiaz-zp3fr NYC is the worst underground transportation system anywhere on the planet. If you need convincing visit London, Berlin, Paris, Tokyo or any major conurbation with a subterranean transportation system
dan taylor nyc is one of the best. It’s one of the world’s most extensive, plus it runs 24/7
I thought I was watching a video on Los Angeles not New York😂😂😂
“Clean, fast, modern and efficient” how many millions did they pay you cuz that’s cap 😭 I like riding in Metro Rail but they’re definitely not clean they’re always delayed they’re kinda old especially the red/purple line and as for efficiency goes well it’s alright 🤷🏻♂️ but that’s pretty much it 😭
You have to remember I made this video many years ago when they were newer and likely cleaner
Who thought "the honor system" was a good idea? The transit agency must lose huge amounts of revenue!!!!
Some of that has to do with how stations on the light rail segments are built. In some cases there are not enough room for turnstiles to be installed at some stations. :( Its crappy I know, instead we get police officers or metro security roaming stations checking fares
You might get lucky, but by the amount of times they check when security/fare inspectors scan your card, your luck will run out within a couple days. By then, the fine will be the equivalent of buying a several month unlimited pass, so the MTA wins. Also, the red and purple lines are totally enclosed with turnstiles, so unless you jump them, you do need a valid TAP card. All the other lines have most stations above ground. It's very easy to walk on board without a valid TAP card, but those trains have more fare inspectors.
The Honor System is No Longer in effect. Each Station has gone to turn styles.
Three simple rules riding the LA Metro Rail.
1. Don't forget your pepper spray.
2. Do not make any eye contact.
3. Have an escape route ready.
Who is paying this guy saying they are clean and efficient? Get real .
IT is not clean and dangerous not even a week ago me and my friends got held up with a dude with a butcher's knife.Theres always so many homeless people on drugs and pee everywhere
Ok only on some, ive never encounteres homeless people and not certainly not serial killers. Ive been riding in metro for years. Im 11 now and i know they may not be clean but there cool.
Security has been VASTLY improved on the Subway and Light rail lines in Los Angeles since the Los Angeles Police Department has taken over law enforcement within the city making the trains safer than ever. I am a daily rider and have seen a tremendous improvement.
Geshmake Woah! I hope it has improved
People actually think that there is craziness everywhere on the stations, but really. There isn't. All my past trips were calm. Down there the stations are calm as fudge. The only voice I hear is when the train is arriving. "The train to Union station is now arriving. Please stand back from the platform edge"
Another thing that they have is mentally deranged people who harass you.
+clevelandphil Hah! That's an added bonus! :)
