The Porsche Macan: Mass car production with a level of customization that comes close to manufacturing.
The Porsche Macan: the most successful horse in the stable of this legendary sports car manufacturer. A compact SUV, combining off-road qualities and everyday versatility with the DNA of a sports car. In its Leipzig factory Porsche produces with 4,300 employees over 90,000 Macan vehicles per year. Every single vehicle: absolutely individual and bespoke manufactured to order. A masterpiece of logistics and engineering design. Retaining their outstanding quality and delivering volume - a balancing act.
Everything begins with the fabrication of the body. Eight hours is all they need for the entire production of a fully galvanized aluminum-steel car body. On more than 35 thousand square meters, a 400-strong robot army supported by people turn pure sheet metal into sub-frames. Around the clock. A perfectly synchronized spectacle with the precision of a clockwork in perpetual motion.
Each individual Macan car body is checked with utmost precision. The same applies to the paint surface and the assembled car. The extent of the individual quality control is unique in mass production - and for Porsche, an absolute necessity.
Since the opening of the Leipzig factory, Porsche has invested over EUR 1.3 billion in this facility - and it is always constantly expanding. Protecting the environment is one key aspect of the investments. Energy is saved in the halls through efficient robotic use, and produced on the rooftops from natural solar energy. The photovoltaic system consists of more than 17,500 modules. Immediately behind the assembly halls and the company's own circular track, there is an entirely different world! Here, Porsche has created ecological compensation areas for the sealed ground space. 25 Exmoor ponies and 75 aurochs graze on this managed eco-system.

I love my Macan. I've driven BMW, Mercedes and Audi, but the Macan is the best car I've ever owned.

Recently gir my first Porsche - a Cayenne twin turbo 4.5 v8 monster and I absolutely love it. You can tell it's much better put together than just about any other car I have had - that includes Mercedes, Jaguar, Range Rover, Ford etc etc. It's quite old now but still no nasty rattles or other problems. I hope to keep it for a good while, unless I win the lottery, in which case a Macan beckons.

Great video. I'm a happy Macan owner. I think 911 and Macan are the best cars made by Porsche now. After 9 years, there is still no sporty suv as well rounded as my 18 Macan GTS. Adding air suspension to a small suv is magical. If Porsche decides to make another generation of ICE Macan, please make it lighter and with stronger timing cover bolts and transfer case.
That small suv to have a v8 seems like it’s fast and you are enjoying given to Porsche driving experience and engineering.

the transfer case issue was fixed in 2019 i believe. The 3rd gen Macan S/GTS with the 2.9 is also amazingly reliable - and sounds amazing as well :).
Porsches are my cars no matter what been always driving Porsches and will never change.
Breakdown all the time and expansive parts and hard to fix, Mechanics called European cars are endless money pit.

I own a 2016 Macan Turbo. It is 7 years old now with 90,000 miles. It drives and feels as nice today as when I bought her 7 years ago. Fun, quiet, comfortable, fast, gorgeous, and really well made.
I just purchased a 2022 Macan with the Premium Plus package and some other bells and whistles that it was spec'd with. All the car I could want and need as a daily. Even just as a base. I'm enamored by the craftsmanship.
Recent owner, glad to hear yours stays beautiful long into ownership, they really are amazing.
America could learn a lot from this factory 😏
Why, the U.S. has shipped all its manufacturing to Mexico or China, so those countries could learn a lot form this factory not the U.S.
Equally unreliable cars
This just made me realize that Robots are not taking our jobs but actually helping us to perform dangerous tasks. For example welding alone is harmful to your eyes even if you use protection, even the welding smoke harm your lungs.
It's like the tech that we use everyday. It's simply a tool for us to make our lives easier.
Not saying this is quite the same, but when steam engines were introduced in the weaving (clothing) industry, there was an upset and riot from workers.
What we ended up with, was a much larger demand and a lot more workers in the industry.
Tesla needs to watch the Documentary
My 2016 Porsche Macan S is sublime. All my friends with new vehicles and Teslas are envious. Porsche (and the rest of VW AG) makes Tesla’s build quality look like something made by Fisher Price.

Reminds me of Le Mans blue on the 69 Corvette. The car the astronauts on the Apollo program drove. My mountain bike is a similar color. Might be buying a Macan GTS in this color.
Very impressive specs of both car and assembly. Truly a work of art and science. An assembly line which doesn't stop for a break. Only blemish I can think of is whether the robots were instructed to install cheat software by the humans.
There is no Diesel option on the Macan, so your precious trees are safe from cheats.

What if these robots stop taking orders, re-program themselves, and escape from the factory? this is a dangerous precedent.
Thats why there are people like me, Industrial Automation and Controls Engineers. We keep the robots from taking over the world. Or, program them to be our mechanical minions, depending on the pay.

Thanks for the GREAT video. My Macan GTS is currently on the Sunshine Ace Car Carrier in the North Atlantic and scheduled to dock on 4/20. It was amazing to see all the steps it took to build one of the best Sport SUVs in the world.

I think lexus allow the production line to be stopped if they see something thats needs improvement because quality comes first. Porsche quality is also very good , but lexus production is also very good.

Hmmm....I find it fascinating when you compare this "automated factory" with the facility used to build the new Bugattis, especially the awesome Chiron Super Sport 300+. They are entirely hand built and the performance specs are out of this world. The videos are available here on CZcams, along with the one of their breaking of the 300 mph barrier for production sport cars. (490.5 kph=304.8 mph)
When Porsche starts selling their vehicles for more than 2 million per vehicle, they too can afford that level of attention.

What… The interior quality is night and day compared to a Nissan. The Macan’s drivetrains are masterful, and I can say the chassis is the best handling of its class. And I dare say that the Macan is the best value for money compared to its competitors. A specced up Macan S generally costs less than an X3 M40i and GLC 43. Are you really comparing a car that does 0-60 in 4.1 seconds, tops out at 170mph, to sh*tboxes that do 0-60 in 10 seconds, and can barely go past 100mph?

OBK That’s for the robots.
They never stop the production line. So either they only make perfect cars or don't much care if they make faulty cars. They check one car per shift very closely and feed back information to production. Clearly they are not Toyota who will stop the production line immediately if a fault is detected. They have checks all over the production line. They won't start the line up again until they are making correct cars. After a couple years of making only perfect cars, they don't make too many mistakes or stop the line very often. Eternal vigilance is the price of quality. Porches are still a whole lot of fun!

Yeah, but by the time a worker gets to the cafeteria, gets the food, pays for it, and finds a table, he/she only has 3 minutes to eat then has to run back to their work station or they will be late.
