  • Screw fasteners are available in fine pitch and coarse pitch. But do you know which one is best. First, we should know that, bolts with coarse threads have a larger pitch.it means number of threads along the bolt length are less as compared to fine threads.
The coarse threads profile has a greater height and hence, a large volume of material is available in thread flanks as compared with fine threads. This is why coarse threads offer great resistance to thread stripping and are thus more durable.
In applications where the length of the thread engagement is short, coarse threads are preferable due to their higher stripping strength. It should be noted that bolts with diameter one inch and over should always have coarse threads.
Coarse threading is also much less likely to gall then fine threading. Because fine threading requires many more turns per inch which generates more friction. Excess friction dramatically increases the chance of galling in fasteners.
A bolt with fine thread is stronger than a coarse thread bolt of same diameter. This is both in tension and shear because of their larger minor diameter.
Fine-pitch threads are stronger in torsion, which means that they can be loaded to higher preloads before yielding. They also resist self-loosening under vibration or shock, and resist stress corrosion cracking, better than coarse-pitch threads do.
Fine threads are more susceptible to galling than coarse threads. They need longer thread engagements and are more prone to damage and thread fouling.
Fine threads are used where fine adjustments are required because fine pitch fasteners have small lead.
For most industrial applications, coarse threads are generally better than fine threads.
So, which is best. the answer is It all depends on the application. Each has advantages over the other.
