    I loved Top Gear. Clarkson, May and Hammond made the show. I'm a fan of all of them. But objectively, he had to go. He assaulted another employee and shouted sectarian abuse at him. In any of profession, that would be grounds for immediate dismissal.
    All the petition showed was that people will excuse inexcusable behaviour for the right people.

    • @Muck006
      @Muck006 Před 8 lety

      +Sean Ó Briain Nope ... the thing is that you do not solve problems by "letting people go". The BBC never even made any attempt to "calm Clarkson down" after the "N-word incident" (which should never have been an incident at all, because whatever Clarkson sings is his own damn affair). They put him on final warning without making him visit a counselor or hire someone that keeps him in line ... and they never made any attempt to include mitigating factors in the punching incident.

    • @AnGhaeilge
      @AnGhaeilge Před 8 lety +17

      +Muck006 Oh please. He assaulted another member of staff. In any other field of employment, it's grounds for immediate dismissal. You're exactly the type of person I was referring to when I said people with excuse inexcusable behaviour for the right people.
      Your employer doesn't owe you counselling, not least in the case of assault. Don't want to get fired? Don't assault someone. Easy.

      @breadonitsown8950 Před 8 lety +8

      +Muck006 I agree with Sean. It's a double standard to say he shouldn't be sacked, because whether you admit it or not, the reasons we try and excuse him are all boiling down to "it's CLARKSON, we love him" - no. It isn't even the first time he's brought the BBC into disrepute. It was definitely time for him to be moved on.

      your right in your observation that it seems top gear isn't doing nearly as well without him. However, it's rather that the presenter SHOULDN'T be bigger than the show. top gear seemed to me to be centered around the personalities of the presenters so that probably explains the ratings drop since their departure. riverman83 sort of agree with you there, since Hammond and May also followed Clarkson out the door (as well as Hillman) I think we will see that 'one (or three) presenters are bigger than the show.' I for one will not be watching a Chris Evans led Top Gear, and probably the saddest part is, another great BBC institution is being let slide by the wayside. None of the above commentators actually answered the question, of course the BBC will survive without Top Gear, but it will be far worse off without it, and another nail in the coffin of this once great establishment. If Match of the Day was to go they may as well close up shop. I'm sure I remember Clarkson making reference to the current state of affairs at the BBC during his time on Top Gear, perhaps his actions were borne out of frustration....

Not very good presenters, the so called humour was forced, unlike the real TG where it was all friendly banter between mates, and Chris Evans RIP (from the show) was like an excitable puppy running about yapping. Plus all the segments in the show were all done far better in the real TG, and is just plain boring to watch. I watched a few episodes on iPlayer which meant I could skip all the boring bits (which was most of it) reducing the run time from about an hour down to about 10 minutes or so. Also, it is not as if JC punched the bloke during a show, whatever happened was all behind the scenes at the end of a days filming.

    If you don't like Jeremy Clarkson, youre not English. Its an undisputable fact, because Jeremy is the last great public figure to represent the intrinsically English wit and style, the old-fashioned grumpy dog-person intellectual that has made England so influential in the modern world. He is the heir to John Cleese, and if you don't like John Cleese, again, you are not from England. John Cleese is the heir of Oscar Wilde, and if you don't like Oscar Wilde, again, youre not from England. The sort of person who doesn't appreciate the cultural importance of JC is the sort of Americanized twat who listens to Beyoncé Knowles and Lily Allen, likes Judd Apatow films, reality TV and trash like BBC News, The Inbetweeners and CSI, whio worships political correctness, New Labour, Facebook and iPhones, and who lives for the sole thrill of accusing people of racism. That's not English. Have some respect for the culture of your country.
    Also, as much as I like Ian Hislop, I find it a bit odd that both Angus Deaton and Jeremy Clarkson were both sacked from the BBC after appearing on his programme. Especially after he surprised me by not defending his colleague.

    They don't explain the context. Yes we're aware that he's a bigoted old man from the 80s and that's not acceptable to behave in that manner. Referring to Asians as slanted for example is nothing but empty racist humour. He says controversial things to get attention. It's less that he finds the statements funny themselves but more that it provokes a reaction from people when he says them. He shouldn't be a person of admiration for those reasons.
    However, we all overlook the events leading up to his outburst. It was almost exactly a year since his wife of 21 years divorced him. That's on his mind at the time and she's not around to help him. "Help him with what?" I hear you say? The death of his mother. His mother died a few months before the incident with the producer. She died of cancer after fighting with it for 5 years. Shortly before his incident, he got a cancer scare himself, which I can only imagine to be horrific for any person but would be deeply personal to him with his recently deceased mother, which isn't easy, particularly as he was close to her. His 5 month girlfriend at the time had left him and so he had none of his usual supports. Be it his ex-wife who was his rock (21 years, close, his first ex-wife was his best friend and she too was described as his support when they first split), his girlfriend or his mum. He was recovering from smoking and alcohol abuse (put himself in rehab) and that's a constant struggle to overcome and maintain a healthy lifestyle whilst ignoring the cravings.
    Then add to all that being old, with a bad back playing up after a day's filming and being told there's no hot meal at the end of it. He flipped. In addition to the punch, it's worth mentioning that he swore and ranted for 40 minutes. That's not mild irritation or child-like annoyance at not having what you want. That's venting. The guy had been put through a lot. It doesn't excuse being violent because the producer didn't deserve anything but it helps us understand why he did what he did.
    So for him to lose his job over it, I find it difficult. It conflicts because he is a bigoted old git and is unapologetic about it even when he "apologises" for his misconduct. He just loves the controversy of it. The n***** remark was not planned by him and so was not his usual spiel of saying something deliberately in the moment to gain notoriety. It was old footage and so unplanned by him to garner attention, meaning it was more of an ordeal for him because he didn't mean for it to get out and wasn't part of his usual jollies.
    The media really went after him with the track record but they glossed over entirely his state of mind, which I believe caused the outbreak more than anything.
    Not a figure of sympathy, i just don't believe he deserved to lose his job over it. Furthermore, I find it baffling that the BBC let their best assets leave subsequently. "No presenter is above the show", Clarkson took Top Gear and turned it from a boring car tutorial/review show into a comedy that became the most successful car show in the world (and I think biggest show in the world also). He wrote nearly everything for it. If he is to be admired at all, it is for being the chief brains behind Top Gear. He wrote everything, including the riffing that he did with Hammond and May with the back and forth. Most of that was pre-prepared by him. It would not be unfair to say that he was the show for many years. May and Hammond did come into it eventually but nobody was involved at the creative level Jeremy was. The proof of the BBC cowing to overwhelming media pressure to sack him was stupidity from a business standpoint. The new Top Gear is abysmal. The ratings prove it. Even without the bias against a seeming replacement for the old trio, it still wouldn't be on a par. Abstractly it wasn't a good show after that. Now the BBC has lost one of it's few big earning products, putting them in a more precarious position for the future.
    A clever bigot or a stupid genius. Either way, I don't think the right decision was made. Certainly for the BBC it was the wrong one.

    • @carbon1255
      @carbon1255 Před 7 lety +2

      It was double entendre where the humour came from the ambiguity between something innocent and something extremely taboo (in this case a racist word). I think it is slanderous to say he was refering to asians as slanted, which is inacurate. He said "There's a slope on it" [the bridge]. He as much said there is an incline on the bridge (which there was) as much as referring to the Burmese man. The racist interpretation is in the mind of the audience, damned by their own racist idea of associating the term. Other than that you make some valid points, but I will say that neither the joke nor Jeremy Clarkson was racist in this instance, and only by abstraction and not quoting correctly do you condemn him here. It is very disingenuous.

Not to mention the millions who enjoy the show. I personally think it should've been handled differently. And the statement, "Frankly my dear I do not give a damn," says it rather well since it had truly had absolutely nothing to do with anyone except the people involved.
