  • Watching videos online, you could be forgiven for thinking street dogs are nice, easy pets. And often they are. But they also come with their own quirks and problems.
We sat down with some people who have adopted a street dog to find out what the highs and lows are and some things that make the street dog experience unique.

Rescued dogs are definitely a breed of their own. My dog Kara lived her entire life in a shelter and an abusive home. Because she was returned twice she has a fear that we are also going to take her back. During the first two months, she hardly slept, was scared of pretty much everything, and didn't want to be left alone. But my gosh she is the most loving dog. She still has some things to work through like anxiety, overprotective, and being able to go places without thinking we are leaving her. But every moment with her is worth it. She is my baby girl and the only regret I have is not finding her sooner.

For every parent to acknowledge their dog’s behavioral problems and yet have the patience to work through them because of their deep love for their dogs is just so precious. Jamie’s words acknowledging that he wouldn’t have a long time with Lady and Mick just made me cry. Jamie, you have so much love and courage; I admire you so much!

This video is very important for people to watch!! Yes, adopting a rescue is the best thing I have ever done. In fact, all my dogs are rescues and my pack will always be of rescues. But, a lot of people fall in love with a rescue story and don't realize that they are adopting a dog who suffered. The trauma will stay with them. A lot of dogs end up being returned becuase people don't understand this. And this video is important. Because these traumatized souls need to find humans who understand that. Having said that, they are the funniest, most loving beings who fill my life with joy every day!! Thank you for this video.

Oh Jamie, you made me cry, you have so much love to give Lady and MJ ❤
It was lovely to hear everyone’s experiences, and how different the reactions are from each dog🥰
I have a Romanian rescue street dog,Rufus, and he is very similar to all of them.
But he is my soulmate now, after 2 years, and my little shadow.
He is learning now, that I will come back from the kitchen, lol or haven’t gone for ever, if I put the bins out!
I would never of changed my decision to adopt him in a million years 🥰

Our little Jorkie (Cheddar) was rescued and had a bad two years of abuse before coming close to being put sleep.
He has turned out to be a good little boy.
He has the run of the flat, is out walking four times a day, love his toys and is the most loving dog we've ever had.
He still flinches if your hand moves too quickly towards him and becomes a little anxious when left alone, so we take him with us when we can.
He is great in the car and also on a bus journey, just goes to sleep.
Think about a rescue dog first if you are going to have one, im sure you'll be surprised?

This is so helpful. 3 years ago I rescued a street dog while I was working on a Caribbean island. Took me about 6 months to nurse her back to health and then she came back to the UK with me. She’s an extraordinary dog, but struggles with a lot of the issues mentioned in the video and I’ve been feeling so isolated and a failure as an owner for how different she behaves compared to all other dogs. This makes me understand that not all rescue dogs were street dogs and street dogs are a breed of their own and I should probably be kinder to myself for offering her a life full of love fun and safety even if it doesn’t look exactly like what I had with my previous rescue dogs.

There are so many reasons rescues are the best dogs you could ever have. Every person in this video restores my faith in humanity. Thank you for finding homes who understand dogs are living beings with feelings, traumas and personalities just like us. Adding anyone new to the home brings its challenges but dogs are so worth it, and it doesn't take long to get beyond the adjustment period.
Please tell us what happened with Hank. I sure hope he's still staying with you, Niall. Can't imagine him ever going back to the street after all he's been through. Very sad his adaptive home didn't treat or value him the way he deserved but I'm dying to know how he ended up back with you and want to be reassured he's now safe at home with you for the rest of his time on earth. Please please tell us about Hank....

Rescue dogs are the absolute best! I have 2 13year old Cocker Spaniels
and 2 rescues! Although I adore all my dogs, I'll NEVER get any dogs from breeders again. Both my rescues were severely abused, before being rescued and nearly starved to death.😢 Sven chewed on window sills, all my furniture and also cushions, when first adopted. I had to get a while new bedroom suite!😂He also destroyed about 14 cushions. Stacey literally barked by my bedside right through the night for about 2 years and I just could not figure out what she wanted.😮 I barely slept 2 hours a night. All my dogs sleep with me, but now she has the main spot next to me. The other dogs are fine with it though. She does not really like the other dogs, but keeps to herself during the day, but at night she wants her mom. I would adopt them over and over and over! Nothing beats the love of a rescue dog!❤❤❤❤

I think when a dog has lived on the street his life is always in danger. Trust becomes a huge issue. And then in the new home they are confined in a restricted space which is not an easy place to take out frustration and fears. A HUGE amount of love and consistent effort is needed. Routine is very reassuring to them. And a special few words to accompany the activities so they know what is coming. Well done to all you sweet patient people. 🙏❤️🐾

PTSD… that’s what they have. I have 6 street dogs, I’m a dog nut, and my life revolves around my babes. So one story of many, Frida, named after the artist that had a difficult early life but who lived her best life to her last day, would always scream… that’s right, scream when you would touch her. Absolutely heart breaking💔 It took over a year for her not to cry out and jump out of her skin when I would touch her. Now she is so affectionate and loving. It was so hard to imagine how horrible she was treated for her to feel that way. It’s the most rewarding experience of my life to serve these babes, 5 chihuahuas and one blue healer right from the streets of phoenix Arizona. I wish you all the best in your endeavors to share a life and love with such beautiful babes of this universe. I have been blessed with so much love, it makes me feel like I’ve done something. 🍀❤️🍀❤️🍀❤️🍀❤️🍀

Seriously one of the best and most informative videos out there. Thank you so much for making it.
I can relate to every single aspect of it.
I am the 5th owner of my rescue pup (adopted 3 years ago at 5 years old) and was told she barks incessantly and is fearful of abandonment - no surprise there.
The first 10 days she was perfect and then she went into destructive mode (now redirected into her own toys). She pee'ed on my carpet rug (but not for long) and hid in my bathroom for a year to every single noise she heard, even the TV remote dropping onto a table.
In the street, she would launch and bark at every single person and dog, but never children, and now it hardly ever happens (although men in black clothes still cause some issues).
When I got her from the rescue centre she had been operated on to remove multiple grass seeds from her body and had to have a further 2 operations in the 1st month to remove more (approx 20 in total). She's never had a problem since.
I don't know what her life was like before and, although I could maybe understand the frustration of her previous owners, I could never imagine abandoning or giving up on her.
The rewards have far outweighed all her issues, some on-going, but I would never, ever change anything even to the extent that I would take on another rescue pup when the time is right.

Great video! It's important to realise that rescues come with their own individual issues. I have a romanian rescue who is the gentlest, cuddliest boy, however he's destroyed my couch by ripping it to shreds with his claws, he's done the same to my hall carpet. He definitely has boundaries and is head shy which I crossed and he bit my nose out of fear. Totally my fault. He's 10 now, been with us 6 years this year and he's my whole life.
Love seeing the reality of the gang. I love watching their progress. ❤️

This is such a tribute to rescue dogs. I took in a puppy from a I found in a London park. He was 15 when he died. He was reactive to dogs on lead but loved other dogs off it. He was cautious of people unless they owned a dog he was friends with or were a member of the family. All children and puppies instantly fell under his protection, which could be seriously problematic! Babies in buggies would be sat beside, if possible, so no-one but parents/carers had access to them. I used to have to intervene and leave a lot of places. But he was the loyalist companion and I would not have missed a second of our time together. Oh, and he ate my favourite hat and a three piece suite! He never peed in the house though.

Living on the streets or in a shelter is a traumatic experience for any dog or human alike. Dogs can also develop PTSD. Unless someone has gone through being homeless they would not understand. Dogs may experience similar reactions as with humans to loud noises and abandonment issues from being homeless. Please persevere and have patience with dogs who have been homeless. Dogs like Whacker, Lady, Moritz and Rodney do want love, eat healthy food and run in a park as well. I am happy the humans in their lives have the compassion to have given them a second chance.❤

I love that we get to talk about the realities of trying to help a stray "dog" become ok with living in a home with a family unit and learn to adapt. Age of the dog matters. I caught my almost dead by starvation chihuahua on the streets. I did all her rehab myself. It took 2 weeks for her to eat food on her own. It took 2 years for her to like me. It took 4 years for her to trust me and become calm. Because she lived on the streets w/o help for a minimum of 3 months she learned to eat everything and poisoned herself 3 times within 2 years. It wasn't an easy journey. She was afraid of everything and other dogs think she looks like a rabbit and want to attack her. So obviously I became her emotional support person. I've had her for 8 years now and she is a true gem. She's my bestie. You'd never know she had a difficult first couple of years. I've always had dogs and admire that she has about 5 times the personality of any other dog I've owned or met. Since that rescue I've become a grandmother of 4 boys and I always joke that the Lord gave me this dog to train me to be an awesome and patient grandma.

I can relate to some of them.
My first one ever was a puppy and was bred in horrendous conditions. I remember just hours of him in the bath getting all the fleas off of him when we first got him as a puppy. He ended living a great 14 1/2 year life never gave problems outside of getting in the garbage. Got on great with other dogs.
My second grew up with my first she was a rehome dog we took when her owners didn’t want her. Think she was abused by her other owners. She lived to be 14 as well. She didn’t get on well with other dogs outside of a couple that she grew up around in the family. She had a bad habit of chewing up cords.
My third I currently have now was another rescue puppy. He’s a golden mixed with something that we never found out. He’s extremely territorial and doesn’t get on well other dogs. Has a bad habit of counter surfing lol and chewed up carpet when he was a puppy like Rodney did. He’s 9 now and has lived a great life. He’s a very independent dog and likes has space. Definitely the best watch dog Ive ever seen.
Totally been worth it all. I’ll never not be a dog owner they’re the best and truly teach us what love is all about.

He’s got great sense of humour is naughty, dirty, smelly but i love him more than anything and recommend it to anyone who has the time and love to give.

I have a rescue dog. He is my first rescue but I always heard that rescue dogs are a different breed. I have never had such a loving dog. I just feel he is so grateful that he has been given a second chance and really wants to show it. We have him 3 years now. He is reactive to other dogs but only when he is out with us. I think he is protecting us. When he is introduced to other dogs he wants to play with them. Anybody thinking about taking a rescue dog I can only say that it is the best thing I have done.

Brill video. Great to catch up with everyone. Really inspiring & educational and helpful to see that dogs are loving but have needs too. Absolute kudos to the adoptive parents for persevering and fulfilling their commitment. Understanding the fear/flight, the chewing all of it deserves 👏 Dog ownership is a big commitment but the most rewarding too. Well done all.

Thanks for posting this video! I've always had rescue dogs; they are the most loyal and grateful beings. Adapting to a new home is a difficult transition, and perseverance, love and patience are highly required. Don't expect a perfect experience; as we humans, these dogs have a history and baggage; the only difference is their resilience. I felt so sorry for Stich; the family didn't give him a chance. I was part of a dog rescue group, and finding homes was a challenging task. Many dogs were returned to us, and some escaped their new homes. Animal rescue is soul crushing; I'm in awe of Niall and his team; what a beautiful people. Thanks for giving me a reason to continue living in this mad world.

Thank you for this. I really think there is a need for more education and trainers to help with traumatized dogs because they have a different degree of trauma than most dogs who are rehomed or adopted from shelters. We’ve always adopted rescue dogs but this past fall adopted our first street dog - without really understanding what differences in behavior that might mean. She was found starving with 10 puppies on a rural northern reservation. She had been on her own scrounging/hunting for food for a while.
She is strongly bonded to people (a real snuggle bug) but, like Rodney, highly reactive to other dogs and with an insane prey drive. This has presented many challenges but honestly it’s the uninformed and judgmental comments, looks and actions from other dog owners and even trainers that have been most difficult. This video has really been helpful in affirming my experience with my pup.

HappyDoggo chose these new owners carefully and obviously they got it right. I had to chuckle at the all out destruction of the settee and carpets, by Rodney who obviously thinks he's into home decor....yet his owners took it in their stride and still say they have no regrets, which is how it should be. We'll never know what these dogs have gone through, so have to make allowances, but the love that they are giving and receiving, makes it all worthwhile. Thank you to all of you new owners for giving these gorgeous dogs a new life, lots of love and forever homes....kudos to you all. 🐶👏💕

I believe people who adopt are good and kind people. When you have that love in your heart, you'll figure things out to your mutual benefit. Unbeknown to you, the dog has been training you about patience, tolerance, awareness, a good sense of humor and appreciation for the simple things in life.

I've read some of the comments below and what I saw on this video, restores some of my faith in humans. And really, the reason why there are so many street and homeless dogs, is because humans have let their own dogs, around the world, go without being spayed or neutered, not enough love from owners to know that dogs and cats need a lot of care and love. They are not to be exploited by humans for things like hunting (particularly in Greece & other countries), having babies and selling their puppies or kittens, racing greyhounds, puppy mills, dogs and cats (as well as many other animals) are now regulars at laboratories for cruel and painful experimentation, etc. etc. Humans must learn that animals are not theirs to exploit, it's only causing a lot of problems for all animals, domesticated and wild. And only making humans more unconscious to the fact, that animals are sentient beings and are unique and want to be comfortable and safe to live out their own lives. Because we are so complicated and have many of our own problems to work out, throughout our entire lives, which is just part of life, and so that should give us much insight into how we can be patient and compassionate with our animals. If you have learned to be patient and compassionate with yourself in your issues with life, then you can do that with your animals. Not every human is going to be able to do that with animals or people, so of course, that would be a good lesson for them to learn, but maybe they never do, so not a good candidate as a caretaker for either people or animals. Some people are so cruel and totally have no empathy for animals at all, and hence, all the cruelty we see to many animals. However, it can really add so much to your life, if you can be challenged emotionally by either humans or animals, and teach yourself to be as kind as possible, one of the most important lessons we learn in our human life. Really, you are doing such a service to adopt rescue dogs and cats, and truly, that is why we are put on this planet, so that we can be of service to others. And those others, are for me, animals, much of the time.

15 years ago i adopted a 3-legged street dog from Taiwan and she was a gift from God🙏🏻. I said goodbye to her 4 weeks ago, it's been so tough. She was a bit aloof and never became a lap dog. But she was always so excited when i came home. She loved hikes and car rides. I drove across Canada with her more than once. She was the best❤

We fostered many street dogs and finally adopted one 30+ fosters later. They were all different but all the same in some ways. It took them months to show their real personality once they knew they were safe. But they were all beautiful and wonderful souls. They were grateful and loving no matter how they were treated in the past. Dogs are so resilient. They are the best companions and family members.
