  • In response to a comment left in the last superbike CVT video, we look at the Aprilia Mana 850 and the Gilera GT800, both bikes have CVTs and higher power outputs than your standard 250cc scooter

    For transmission it's the torque that's important (not hp) so the Aprilia CVT could easily bear the R6 engine (which has comparable torque at the crank).
    And although power to weight ratio of the bike doesn't matter for transmission reviewing, you compared weight of a V2 commuter/all-around bike (wheel hp) with supersport 600 (bhp) to make a case against a CVT (such that all the extra weight is because CVT).
    If you want to be objective, you should compare the weight and power of Mana/GT800 with its peers (Yamaha BT1100, Moto Guzzi Bellagio 940...).

    The Aprilia Mana has 76 horsepower, not 55hp. It gets in 5 seconds to 60 mile per hour.... so decent bike

      The Workshop Maybe it’s his bike. Tested my mana and guess how many horses it had? 75+... this test shows thats removing the airfilter cover gives it more power... power was already there, you have just to release the beast in it. Also this dude has a standard exhaust and a open filter. Too much air, too small butthole. so the air cant find it’s way out and returns to the engine... again... exhaust doesn’t give more hp, but it gives a better airflow... all these things have nothing to do with hp, but it releases the 76hp that is in there. So not marketing my friend. Europe doesn’t work like that.. it’s 76hp@7250rpm~76.5Nm/7.79kgf-m.. so start over 😂

    Thank you for the information, the CVT is simple and rather fascinating, I tried one on a snowmobile old a few years ago and thought, a strong baby could drive this.
    The 165 bhp Ski Doo Snowmobile uses quite a compact CVT, however the snow may offer substantial cushioning.
    I appreciate the ease of maintenance on the CVT and just carrying a spare belt.
    Maybe the sound is more pleasurable when gear changes have to be made.
    Congratulations on drawing accurate circles.

    why use a cvt and then restrict it to seven gears, it defeats the purpose of a cvt

  • @g0fvt
    @g0fvt Před 7 lety +2

    FWIW there has been work done on a different type of CVT entirely, effectively using a shock absorbing spring in the drive train and a clutch mechanism that pulses the drive very quickly. The clutch does not slip, it is either engaged or released, very low rating prototypes have been made, the system certainly works but not yet for high power/torque applications. I have probably explained this very badly, keep up the good work with the videos.

    i always had the mana pegged as a commuter, and as such not tuned for high rpm bhp, more low-mid grunt. bmw f800 of the same era is basically similar for bhp and torque. according to mcn, the mana weighs 181kgs, the bmw 182kgs. i always had the biggest problem with cvt simply being that it's a bit boring, and that being why they put the artificial steps in the operation, and in doing so created unnecessary complexity and a reliability problem. it's easier and cheaper to just make everything normal, so it got dumped instead of developed.

    well, if it's not suitable for superbike how Renault-William successfully develop a cvt for F1 which was eventually so good that it got banned ? Sure f1 have pretty low torque but a "shite load" of power and are really lightweight, so : low torque, high output and light, it's a similar case to superbike, then why would it be impossible to transpose this technology ?

    • @dirtygarageguy
      @dirtygarageguy  Před 7 lety

      loads of reasons
      1) F1 can spend whatever they like
      2) small enough for a bike?
      3) light enough for a bike?
      4) has to be as small and as light as a 6 speed gearbox
      5) can't be too expensive
      6) has to be suitable for mass manufacture
      Solve these issues and we're all gravy baby

    55hp isn't a whole lot for an 850. My father's Burgman 650 Executive made that much power, and even more torque.

  • @stansegers4490

    most of the time you will never get to the maximum torque point. (it is on low rpm where the cvt will never get the bike)

  • @wumme
    @wumme Před 7 lety

    I had the "pleasure" to sit in a Nissan Juke which is using a CVT (which broke after 50.000 km) and wondered if this is not just a normal automatic system as you could clearly hear that is was using different gear ratios which in ideal world shouldn't happen. When reading about it and whatched a video on youtube i understand that a main problem of CVT is, that you don't want an engine to run on the same rpm the whole time. When you crusing along you want the engine to run on low rpm to save fuel, but when you need max power this setup is shit so what the car manufacters using CVT are doing is to emulate a conventional gearbox which is bullshit from my point of view. If they do have engines available like Audi which would be able to operate in small rpm band like the diesels they can't use them for there CVT setup due to torque limitations as you explained.

    1. How you will explain the weight for example of Honda NC 750X ? Even the one without double clutch ... (What is heavy on NC?) To explaint the weight just by using of CVT is little bit unfair.
    2. Once you are comparing the engine output of R6 and Mana. Please consider that you are comparing the HP measured on the rear wheel and HP measured on crank.
    3.Maybe you should point your attention to effectivity of different types of transmission systems. That is something that makes difference. Would be interesting to know what are the date of R6 meassured on rear wheel. That would give you some imagination what is the power loss of different transmission. That is maybe why Honda is using double clutch system to solve the same issue - automatic transmission.

      You spent a lot of time trying to claim that a CVT couldn't handle real power.
      I'd say that 600+ hp pushing a 500 lb machine is a hell of a lot more of a workout than any superbike drivetrain ever gets
