Weekly we rehearsed for years with me as his pianist in a woodwind quintet The oboist, Ed Demattia, is of a family of musicians and conductors. I am well aware of the oboe's capabilities. I meant my statement as a compliment to the music, and not a display of ignorance. In the past oboe was also used for calls to war or to signal danger when a more strident instrument was not present.
