As a Killers fan and avid live concerts CZcams watcher, I know that for a few years they've been doing this ¨bring a fan on stage to play drums" thing. I'm not the first and won't be the last. So I wanted to give it a try.
Also, my country Chile is about to vote for a New Constitution. As a Chilean living outside of the country, there's not much I can do except vote when I have to. So I thought maybe I could kill two birds with one stone. This could get "some" exposure and say that Chileans abroad also Approve of the New Constitution. EL APRUEBO ES INTERNACIONAL! I even made myself a YO APRUEBO t-shirt!
I went to rehearsal rooms 4 times in the 15 days leading up to the show. I don't have a drum kit where I live and haven't played constantly since 2016, but some practice makes it feel like riding a bike. I concentrated on practicing (a lot) the drum fills and following the beat. I practiced with my phone, my Shure SE215 earplugs, a Metronome app and also with the Royal Albert Hall version of the song on mp3 and on video, to tattoo the song in my head and also see all the wonderful things Ronnie Vanucci does (WHAT A MONSTER DRUMER. Possibly the greatest I've ever seen).
I got there at 9 AM for the GA Line. Number 1. But there was also a VIP GA line with early entry. Luckily I knew 2 people there: Marco and Elva, two of a whole lot of U2 fans I've met around the world. With them was Marco's girlfriend Sara. They got in first and saved me a spot on the rail.
I brought a sign that on one side was the Chilean flag with a big APRUEBO written on it, and on the other side said "I PRACTICED FOR WEEKS TO DRUM WITH YOU" and then, in smaller print, I wrote BPM 140. BPM means Beats Per Minute. If you're somewhat of a musician, you know what a BPM is. 140 are the BPMs of "For Reasons Unknown". So I was telling them "Hey, I know how fast the song is, I've practiced to that speed, I know my shit". (I've played drums since 2000).
There were more people with signs that wanted to play drums and even bass, but I was right on the rail, front and center, and who knows? Maybe my BPM or the "Practiced" line worked, and they pulled me on stage. I showed the sign a lot of times, just to be sure they could see it.
Then the problems started HAHAHA
Very nervously I showed Brandon and Ronnie my metronome app, maybe they got it, maybe not. On my way to the drum riser, I dropped the phone. I connected the earplugs (should've done that before) and had a hard time getting back to the app! Ronnie was telling me to leave it alone but I pulled through and started to count and leading Ted on the beat in my ear. But then THE PHONE SLIPPED FROM MY POCKET AND FELL TO THE FLOOR. It kept the beat going, but it wasn't loud. I could barely hear it. The first half of the song was just anxiety and concentration trying to listen to the click. When the song gets to the middle part I asked a photographer behind me to hand me the phone. And after that, I don't remember if I was able to get the volume up. (Them rushing things on stage doesn't help anyone).
But I think all the practice paid off because the drum parts went by without even thinking about them, some of them I don't remember a day later. I was just scared of losing the beat.
Also, my Chilean flag/#APRUEBO sign fell after a few bass drum beats :( And I guess my YO APRUEBO t-shirt was hard to see on those small screens on the sides.
I can see and hear all my errors in this video. Some bass drum hits were too quick. Some fills didn't land as I practiced. The damn cymbals are too loose, they have no rebound so they just fly around and they're so hard to hit again! With Ronnie being a tall guy, the snare was a little high and the hi-hat too close to the snare. The view up there is not the best either. A little in between the 2 big crashes, the upper levels in darkness and that's it. I couldn't see Brandon during 95% of the song.
But it was really cool when I started to play the bass drum, the whole riser was shaking and I could hear the people roaring. I'll never forget that, Dave's smile, Vinnie's nod of approval and Brandon's smile.
Thanks to all the people that helped me and to all the people that congratulated me after the show. I guess I did alright :)

This "pepo" guy used to be a part of violent mobs who made drivers get off their cars and dance to support their views 'or else'. Those who didn't obey were viciously attacked and many of them ended up in the hospital. Several children were attacked as well. All of this took place in Chile, 2019-2020. Of course there's no reason for the band or international fans to know this, but I think it is important that everyone here knows this person is a horrible human being and deserves to be imprisoned.
