Early Datsuns were in fact made from dog food cans! I have had 3 early 70's Datsun pick-ups! I would love to have another. I kick myself for selling them!

To be fair, the most interesting car of those two, is the 200 SX - it's a rare beast. Lots and lots of the Datsun Z-series cars out there, but the 200 SX is like to find a diamond in a mud hole.

My dad had a 200SX back in the day, it was the first non-American car he ever owned. He always talked highly of it, said it was much more refined than his 442 he drove through college. My mom totaled it during a Seattle winter rain storm 😆

That 200SX is in crazy good shape considering Iowa winters and salt. That's definitely a project you should keep and continue working on! So many auto shows have Z-cars, but very few have 200s.

I’m a 57 yr old woman. My mom had a Datsun 200sx when I was a kid. That was the car I drove on when I got my license. I drove it all over town before I even got licenses too. This video seeing that car brought back a lot of memories. My mom hauled 3 kids around on that little 2 door car. Her car was 5 speed just like that. It was yellow with black interior.
That 280Z has a well known problem with the AFM. The spring inside of it loses tension and no longer meters fuel correctly. If you carefully pop/cut the plastic cover off of it, take the spring out of the center of it and find a replacement for that spring. Once replaced, the car will produce up to an extra 30 hp than what it is doing now. I have a 77 280z that I purchased in 1985. It is still in my garage today.

Wouldn't the parameters of that spring be critical to getting good A/F ratio? Coefficient (spring rate) and length being the two most important. If the coefficient is not right it might only be good at one particular airflow and lean or rich at other airflows

Man that 200SX is bringing back memories, My Aunt had a 76 Datsun B210 Honeybee she bought new while she was in the Navy and stationed in San Diego, when she got out she moved back home to Missouri to go to college then went back into Navy went to OCS and became an Officer and went to Pensacola, she drove that Datsun up until the time she had her 3rd kid in 1989 then she sold it, Hers was like a honey tan color with Black graphics and a big old Bee on the back of the front fender, it was a cool little car.
My Dad had a '79 300zx. With the blade shade on the back windshield. That girl was a badass! He looooved that car! 😃
Loved this video. This era Japanese cars were the ones that people realized were so much better than what the US brands offered. I had a 1976 Celica GT that I traded my 73 Vega GT on. What a difference!

I've had 2 of them both were 1977 good little cars L20B engine in them undesirable cylinder head but still a good engine that can be made better if you get a different head or leave it as is.
Also the front suspension is almost exactly like a first gen 510 so it easily be done up nice.
Nissans are good cars, I'd take the 280 myself
In South Africa people love these old Datsun/Nissan cars and pick-up's. I personally still daily drive a 86 Nissan 1400 pick-up and they never die. Especially the carbureted ones.
The Nissan 1400 pickup's got the nickname champ, because of their reliability, that later got adopted as the official name for the pickups and they were manufactured from the 1971 until 2008 until emissions regulations ended their long stading pillar of the South African most beloved pickup.
Over 275, 000 of these pick-ups were build in South Africa and even till today 2024 you still see these pick-ups being driven on a dayly basis.
Rust buckets or not you can not deny the old Datsun's reliability. Forever Datsun will live on in our proud Datsun owners hearts.
I really enjoy the stories and the owners it is nice to see people passionate about vehicles.

That 200 it was kind of like a Pontiac Aztec of its time.
It's kind of hilarious irony, seeing that 200sx look almost contemporary along modern vehicles over 45 years after it was built.
OMG! Not only a revival video of an iconic Z car, but also an original Datsun 200SX! I had the exact same 200SX , a ‘77 5 speed in highly oxidized silver. It was my first car in the early 90’s. It was kept for 4 years and was super reliable after I rebuilt the car on the L20B motor. I remember scouring local thrift stores for 8 tracks to use in the dash mounted player….

That little 200sx is really under rated. It is possibly the more fun of the two cars. I had one years ago and it was a complete hoot to throw it around on the roads

Also, this takes me back to high school. I had a Datsun 210, a buddy had a 200SX and another buddy drove a 260Z.
And, the 200SX was not the bottom of the line. It was one step below the Z as a “sporty” car. In 1978, the B210 was the low car on the totem. There were 310s, 510s and 810s (I think).
You are correct on the three model lines, the 210(Became the Sentra) the 510(Altima) and the 810(Maxima)
I was "given" a 1977 Datsun 810 wagon in 1984 by my parents as my 1st car - I believe it had the nearly indestructible 240z engine with a 4 speed overdrive automatic. It stayed in my family from 1979 to 1990ish. It handled like a boat but always started
The SX was a sporty variant. It looks pretty decent.
There was also a 280 z and 280 zx turbo and a 280 4 x 4 four seater but the rear seats were small like for kids .
They are almost impossible to find without rust . Metal was thin .
Always a blast seeing those old barn finds come back to life. Like to see whats the next diamond in the rust.
We had a wonderful time rebuilding our 280 Fairlady with not quite as much body work to do as you, the fun one and apparently almost always rust spot is in the hatch, mostly due to grime build up that sits and rust all on it's own. Our project was to re-engineer (not much though) a Skyline GT-R engine into the hole and make it run. Which was/is great and it passes smog ha ha. We've done similar things to some Silvia's too, We really need to do videos of our work.
The 200 SX is the true find! Besides the rear end damage she looks great! They didn't make many of them so they may appreciate in value!

Most of them have been lost to rust and to people cannibalizing them for parts for other cars such as 510s. Many of these 200 SX Met an untimely death, I'm sure most of them were mint.
It's kinda like what happened to the first generation infinity Q45
The bodies on those q45 cars were so well-made they almost didn't rust. Most of them were strip for their engines long before he died of anything else.
I love the sound of the ford flatheads, they’re so unique and I never get tired of it.

As a Z owner every point that you pointed out on that 280 Z is exactly where the Z’s rust both of the rear quarters are gone, fenders (front) sometimes are gone, the doors yes, the bottom of the door the lower side that is rusted, the floor pans are gone so all the rust on that 280 Z is very common

Friend replies “It looks great I can’t believe you still have that thing so how many cars do have now?” I then quickly changed the subject.😂
Hey, Kevin! The 280 is WAY cool, but if you can get that 200sx in shape and running, you'll have a blast with it! Not long after my wife and I met in '84, we looked at an (I believe)'82 280zx. WOW, was that a sweet ride! She wound up not buying it, but to this day she talks about how much she regrets her choice! Have FUN with both of those! Great video, Brother!

For ya Kev, from an old tow truck hand. Put a bottle of dish soap in your winch box on your trailer. Squirt a little in front of the stuck wheel and and it’ll slide that sucker on quicker than you can say “Robert is your fathers brother.”

That 200 reminds me of a few other Datsuns from my past and I have a soft spot for the 200sx. I think that one might be a keeper to work on slowly because other than the bit of damage, she could be worth the work.

He sure would. It kills the seals in carbs and washes all the lubrication off of the top rings. Probably the harshest thing one can do to an engine that's been sitting.
Interior on the 200sx is awesome, plus seems like it would be fun if it were in better shape.
That car is actually in pretty good shape, the damage to the rear doesn't seem too bad to repair
30 plus years ago my father-in-law bought a used 200SX of that vintage and restored it. He drove it for several years and liked it a lot.

Quite like the 280Z lot of fun to drive especially when completely roadworthy .
Imagine sorting it out and having some decent modern tyres/tires on it .
Yes a nice project for someone.
With a modern wheel and tire combo those old Z cars can easily be daily driven.
The EFI when in good order and tuned properly makes them start like modern car.
Couple that with a light clutch and positive shifter, and simple, robust mechanicals, they are a treat. I had one when i was in tbe Navy, it was my daily driver, and i drove it like i stole it. Just about the only way you can kill one of these cars is to intentionally try to kill it by running it without oil... and even then it would probably run for a decent long time before it stopped.
The only way for these cars to die a natural death was rust. This video is living proof of that the reason his car was parked was because it was so rusty not because it didn't run.
They pretty much drive like a 1990s or even early 2000s car.
Only issue with modern rubber is they become a bit heavy steering when parking, these cars are portly beer cans, about 2800-3200 lbs at the curb for the 280z depending on model and options.
The AC system in a 280z was the equal of a GM system of that era (or in other words quite good)

Love how these look, never knew how well they were made, but usually they were quality cars and these days can cost quite a lot. I just heard that the cars "made In Japan'' before mid 90s or later followed a different principle. They would last longer. My MX-6 1993 back in the day would look better than a Mazda 3 which was rusted out so that the rust was all over the place. So no wonder this thing is in good condition. Although the MX-6 did suffer rust in the end, it was not as bad as on the newer cars which are meant for their life span of 7 to who knows how many years. Probably due to the idea that you want to upgrade to newer standards and what not.
Japan is about making sure the engine last first then go for looks with the rest of the budget, I have a 97 Camry and at 150k miles its barely broke in.

The lil 200 is becoming* a valuable car these days. People are shooting each other in the neck to get at the vintage 70s Jap cars these days. It’s unfortunate she was rear ended. BUT maybe with some pulling and straightening she would fix up! Investigate this car Kevin. You will see what ITalkin bout! Awesome content!
Had a slew of 280Z's, the '75's and some '76's were chock full of German made Bosch components (Later used Hitachi production) for the L-Jetronic injection.
In good tune they were a blisteringly quick car with absurdly good handling. Many I assume got neglected because the early FI systems were more than a bit alien to those used to working on carbs, but if you took time to read up on the L-Jetronic, it was amazingly simple and easy to keep running. I wish I still had some of the ones I hooned up back in the 80's and 90's when they were cheap, but Michigan auto cancer eventually consumed them all.

Had an '80 model regular 280ZX myself in mid-'80's, bought it for a good price and replaced a vacuum advance unit on it, car used to return me 28 mpg on the highway. It had some very minor rust issues around the windshield trim area, otherwise perfect body on it. It was unfortunately stolen a couple years later from my 1st wife's work.

Highly entertaining. I have to say you're brave to have your truck connected to the trailer still. One word FIRE. Absolute blast to see you drifting in that little car! Amazing that they had the clutch master cylinder in stock. It must fit a BUNCH of cars.
Yep pretty much every single Nissan manual transmission vehicle since probably the late 1950s and up to like at least 2010 or so uses the same three-quarter inch bore clutch master cylinder and a 5/8 inch bore slave. In fact, up to about 1979 or so they use the same Bendix bolt pattern..
Those early Datsuns, Wilwood master cylinder, will bolt right on, and even the later ones, with a slightly different bolt pattern are close enough that they aftermarket manufactures, simply make a larger base and they just drill appropriate bolt holes for the specific vehicle application.
Nissan basically built their brake systems under license from Bendix and it stuck.
even today Nissan hydraulic systems use standard bore sizes rather than metric.
I loved Datsun's in my youth. Here in OZ I had a baby shit brown Datsun 1600 (510), 68 degree works cam, head work and twin 45mm DCOE Webers. I sank every spare cent into that car. Later on a I built an offraod race care out of a Datsun 520 Ute, which finished on the same chassis but with 720 body, f100 twin I beam suspension and a 351 windsor in it. Another fun car.

The 240z was a beast, I ran one without even a cooling fan for 5 years, I ran with 140lb of sandbags over the back axle. it would drift going from 3rd to 4th at 90mph without even trying.the 260 and 280 were a poor attempt to cover the added weight of all the safety implentations required. Torquier, but less smooth power band. this wasn't fixed until the 300zx.
The 260 in this video sounded horrible.

I have a photographic memory.. One of my cousins on the wealthy side of my family had a first-year '70 240 in Orange, and the image of it, brand new, factory fresh, and pristine is still vivid in my mind, as are the experiences of riding in it.. the longest being a four hour drive each way to their vacation house.... And he always drove it like he stole it... FUN TIMES.. Truly a Breathtaking car for it's time..

Damn Kevin, back at it with the White Datsun! My first car was a 78n280z. Love these cars. I'm in the process of restomodding a 69 Datsun 510, 2 door. Always fun to see these things get revived.
I actually like the old 200SX. It's got weird body styling, but it's kinda cool. Reminds me of a large Datsun 100A Cherry.
I've always liked the 200SX. Many think they are odd looking, but to me, they were among the last of the nicely styled Japanese cars before they went with way too many scoops, slats, and spoilers.
Back in 1985, my dad let me drive a Navy Blue 1979 Datsun B810 coupe to high school. It had the 240Z straight six engine in it, which made it pretty quick for its day. I really enjoyed that car.
I grew up with a few Datsun's in my early years...the first and most memorable was my dad's new 260Z, copper metallic with black interior. What a car!
Time to learn welding, frame repair and panel replacement! Make her safe.....ish to drive. You can do it! In The UK, 70's Datsuns dissolved faster in the winter rain than a sugar cube in hot tea!
@JunkyardDigs, here's an idea: use the 280Z as a parts car for the 260 that you already have. Either run the L28 with the stock L-Jetronic FI, or use that as a base for a standalone EFI, like Megasquirt or Microsquirt. That way, you'll have the full 170 hp in the 260 body, plus you can then use any Windows-based notebook to tune the engine for the best performance and economy possible.

I once found a massive pair of mole grips at the scrap yard. Have been used loads for things they probably shouldn't.

Those old iron block L20B's are practically indestructible! With forged crank and rods from the factory, you can wind them to the moon and not hurt them, and they can be built for some serious horsepower! Same with the 2.8 L28E (and ET turbo) in the Z and ZX cars brought into the US. Datsun had turbo versions of both the L20 and L28 engines for competition use only, called the LZ series that were making upwards of 560 hp. with a twin-cam crossflow head. There was also a LD28T, which was a turbo diesel based on the same block. I actually worked on one back in the late 80's that was in an 810 sedan! Supposedly they weren't even supposed to be offered in the U.S. in any vehicle, so this guy must have gotten one of the Japanese 'pullouts' that usually have under 30,000 mi., and had it installed. At any rate, it was no slouch for a diesel burner!!😉 A lot of cool history behind these cars...😊

That is a pretty sweet deal. Yeah 500 was probably too much for the smaller one, but was it really? Those were like the beginning of the Japanese economy car movement here in the States. They really are a part of hour history, be it good or bad, we now rely on Nissan Toyota and Honda as 3 of our MAJOR importers today! Neat and surprisingly easy to get them both running
