I think maturity is lacking in the group. I think getting girls that are "older" would be pretty hard being that they marry and have children so young. I would not have picked the girls that she picked. It seems that she picked the pretty, wild, stylish, loud girls not the quite calm girls.

However, it was Thema's goal to get the young ones with a skill. It was a double edged sword for sure. I absolutely agree about some of the wild ones. I HATE that their parents leave the eldest daughter in charge of all her younger siblings and they practically have to raise them themselves. It’s not the child’s job to raise by our kids because you couldn’t be bothered to use protection or anything and so you just keep popping them out

I teach high school in the US and recently in education we’ve been talking more about “soft skills” and how invaluable they are in the work place. I see a lot of comments about these girls’ behavior and dress at a job interview, but you have to remember they have lived their whole lives in an insular community that has discouraged them from working for generations. They’re also encouraged to leave school at very early ages, and most of the men in their lives probably don’t work “regular” jobs either. There’s no one for them to learn from when it comes to how to act professionally.
I always respected Thelma ,but after seeing this and getting to know her better and seeing what a kind heart she has I respect her that much more!!!! Really amazing woman I hope everything works out for her and her family!!!!
Can’t wait to see the rest. I’m a costume maker so I’ve admired Thelma’s work for years. Good on her for giving these girls a go. I was in the same boat, no dressmaking skills, and someone had faith in me and gave me a go.
I wish more people would do things like this -- take on teens as apprentices so they can learn a skill from an expert. Then they'll always have a way to support themselves no matter what happens.

She found a niche in where others never gave a chance … and has giving back into the community of The Traveller, giving girls these golden opportunities. What is the most shocking/sad thing to me is how the 16/17 year olds still seemed to be emotionally immature. I'm guessing that's what happens when you haven't had any structured training or education since you were 10 or 11 years old. It's not their fault obviously but to me it's disgusting that some cultures still believe in keeping girls sheltered and dependent. They done hard to go to college or be career women but dammit at least give the girls options and allow them to learn and grow.

Great idea ! It could do wonders in the gypsy/traveler community close by. It would also mean the world to these women. Imagine being the face of fashion in their community! That would be rather rewarding, especially over being a basic gypsy house wife. The opportunity to open their minds is also on the table.

I've never though of sewing or being a seamstress for a living but I'm old and still haven't found my niche and to be able to fall back on this and not have to work for anyone but yourself is really really great.

Kids are cruel & have a thing for picking out anything that makes another kid different & sadly the adults in schools don't seem to care much about bullying.. well from my experience anyways

I LOVE this. Not only is it very important working experience but it is also teaching them a skill that they genuinely are probably interested in. Most traveler girls are pretty interested in fashion and they can end up being able to not only make their own money but also be able to fix their own clothes or get paid for doing alterations on their own. It’s such an awesome idea. I totally get the apprehension from her current staff but I have so much respect for Thelma for trying to make it happen. And I do realize this was a few years ago and Is super irrelevant now but still
I think this is wonderful, just a little confused how she’s only made 50,000 pounds in 15 years of dressmaking. These dresses go for many thousands of dollars. Prior to moving to a big space with more overhead, she worked in what looked like a very small space with handful of employees. She lives in a huge house with lots of expensive furniture etc…so is this some way of drumming up stress and chaos for views or is she a horrible money manager.
I can’t believe Thelma’s partner didn’t put together a breakdown of costs to renovate in advance of actually starting. My hubs is a contractor and puts together punch lists and prices everything out in advance of doing projects, it’s a standard practice. And she budgeted $10k for the renovation and it’s $36k over, that’s still not $50k. It doesn’t add up to me.
This is a eye opening experience. I have learned so much from watching these episodes. Thelma is a good person. She's actually a blessing to that community. Her story is absolutely fascinating and a testimonial,, of what hard work will get you. Even though you have made mistakes in your past.
The latest update I have is she fired her head of design Leanne. The two went to court over it. Leanne won on unfair dismissal an since has started her own business

I have no issues with travelers etc. BUT I don't understand how "any" parent would think that it was ok for their child to grow up and be Ignorant in life? Reading and basic writing and just having basic manners and respect for themselves and others?. I don't agree with the no education and getting married at 16 to another "KID"! If their child gets sick and they have to go to the hospital and they can't read or understand a consent form or let alone fill one out? Not encouraging education for these kids is a crime in itself! Dumb/ignorance is forever... I just can't imagine any parent not wanting the best and best life for their kid/s?. You have to love Thelma's courage and honesty! Even when it comes to her personal life she doesn't hold back.

This is a eye opening experience. I have learned so much from watching these episodes. Thelma is a good person. She's actually a blessing to that community. Her story is absolutely fascinating and a testimonial,, of what hard work will get you. Even though you have made mistakes in your past.
Are there any updates about Thelma being that we are almost 10 years on? She is definitely an inspiration and hope she is relaxing in retirement land.
The latest update I have is she fired her head of design Leanne. The two went to court over it. Leanne won on unfair dismissal an since has started her own business

Question...where are the mothers of the daughters while they're taking care of the children and doing all of the cleaning?? It's not like they work and you never see them except for at the weddings.

I have no issues with travelers etc. BUT I don't understand how "any" parent would think that it was ok for their child to grow up and be Ignorant in life? Reading and basic writing and just having basic manners and respect for themselves and others?. I don't agree with the no education and getting married at 16 to another "KID"! If their child gets sick and they have to go to the hospital and they can't read or understand a consent form or let alone fill one out? Not encouraging education for these kids is a crime in itself! Dumb/ignorance is forever... I just can't imagine any parent not wanting the best and best life for their kid/s?. You have to love Thelma's courage and honesty! Even when it comes to her personal life she doesn't hold back.

Thelma is a very giving person to care so much about these girls. She knows they have no work ethics, but that can be learned like everything else. I like her attitude that out of all of them, at least one will shine!😊
