To answer a point Daz made: They did keep him from playoff games at some point. He sued MLB for racial discrimination over it. He lost the lawsuit because just like his umpiring, he gets everything wrong. 🤣
Fans aren’t generally supposed to know any umpire’s name So if an umpire has a name that’s not only known but WELL-known, that should definitely tell you something
Exceptions can be made for the GOAT Pat Hoberg. He called balls and strikes during a World Series game with 100% accuracy. Ian Happ said it best, if Pat calls me out on a borderline pitch I don't even question it. I turn around and walk back to the dugout because most likely I am out.
@@coyotelong4349 There are quite a few spread across sports. The problem is that casual fans will only know the really bad ones, so all of them are looked at as "bad" if you know what I mean. It is interesting that the vast majority of both pitchers and hitters do not want full roboumps calling balls and strikes. They want to keep the human element in the game, but allow a challenge.
@@melissaford717 I was born, raised & still live in the city & no one talks like that. He has even admitted that people think he’s from Delco, not Philly

Here's the best joke about Angel Hernandez's retirement that I've seen: "Reports are coming out that Angel Hernandez's retirement came out from a meeting with top MLB officials. Officials were questioning Hernandez's ability to see and comprehend correctly. Angel got so worked up that he stormed out and slammed the door behind himself. It took Angel 10 minutes to realize that he was in the closet...His announcement of retirement came soon after."
He once told a story on a podcast of how he failed umpire school 4 or 5 times before sneaking into a hotel where a league president was staying to convince him for one more chance.
Hernandez was earning over $400k his last years as a senior umpire. MLB umpires receive good compensation and benefits like health insurance, travel allowances, and pension plans. Happy retirement!! ...Time for college baseball tournament madness!!!
Tim Donaghy is the most infamous NBA ref. He confessed to fixing scores for gambling. Way worse than Angel Hernandez, who was just stupid and trying to end games sooner (contrary to his purported "love for baseball").
With the recent, dramatic increase of legal gambling on MLB games, the casinos and their oddsmakers can't be crazy about having additional unpredictable factors such as umpiring compounding the statistical variability of player performances, the latter of which they can at least try to model.
The worst NBA ref was Joey Crawford. Hes the one you saw eject Tim Duncan for laughing on the bench. He was a complete scumbag with a massive ego, and he constantly made the game seem rigged by always calling so many fouls against the away team at the end of games. He made the NBA unwatchable
Last I checked Joey Crawford never went to prison because of his calls he made. You can't call him the "worst NBA ref" when a referee in the NBA was literally sent to prison for his involvement in a points fixing scandal. You may not like Crawford, but at least he upheld the integrity of the game.
@@brianeleightonupheld the integrity of the game? He literally threw out Tim Duncan for laughing. Man had the thinnest skin taking professional work personally.
@@beckayshaw6083 Having a short fuse isn't failing to uphold the integrity of the game. That is being an asshole, which falls squarely under the "you don't like him" category. Why? Because referees ARE allowed a wide latitude under the rules for ejecting players...including for laughing. You are saying he is worse than a referee that literally threw entire games in order to make gamblers money. Referees are definitely NOT allowed to do that. See the difference?
Baseball Doesn't Exist goes into much greater detail in his video this week about his career. He's pretty well defended in the video about umps who are worse statistically, but when Angel was wrong, it was atrocious.
What would have been the result if both teams refused to play knowing Hernandez was the Ump? Could MLB force the Umpire Union to ditch Hernandez? Could the Fans have forced the Umpires Union to act? My guess is yes, I for one, wouldn't spend my hard earned cash to watch a Baseball game dictated by a Mister Magoo.
He is not the worst, just has had the worst reputation. I kinda feel bad for him, he is a great guy, always gives balls to kids, just has made some bad calls and become the posterboy for bad umps.
Even though he was a shi umpire he was a genuinely nice guy off the field and would give game balls to kids at games. Also it takes multiple years of minor league umpiring before you ever make it to the MLB as an umpire.

He lost outward. Im still convinced the mlb kept him on because they didnt wanna go through any more lawsuits with him.
Only thing he got right was deciding to retire.
Even if he _was_ forced out by MLB…
Didn't even give us a goodbye tour so we could all boo him.

A great day for baseball.
firing a ump in the MLB is almost like trying to go into area 51, JS
heres hoping yall get a MUCH better ump than Angel for the london series although that bar is really a tripping hazard in hell
I think the institution of the official strike zone box on TV, guaranteed his retirement. It was too obvious how bad he was at calling pitches.
The strike zone box you see on tv is not official. It is placed there by the tv broadcast and can vary based on each team's feed.
