- Charine John interviews Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr OBE, Mayor of Freetown, Sierra Leone.
Prior to standing for office, Yvonne had already received plaudits for work that she had done to help fellow Sierra Leoneans. In 2015, she was awarded an Ebola Gold Medal by the president of Sierra Leone Ernest Bai Koroma and she was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in January 2016. In 2020, she featured was on the list of the BBC's 100 Women (BBC) and last year, 2021, she was named one of the 100 next honorees by Time Magazine.

Yvonne is God's gift to Freetown, she has a clear vision of where she wants the city to be in x years from now. This woman has a wealth of knowledge & experience in urban development and excellent Leadership skills to move things forward. Well done Yvonne.

She hasn’t done nothing, look how dirty the city is it is a shame to even be on here. You’ve traveled to other part of the world you saw how organized and decent they are. All the leading office holders in that country are all exploiters God forgive you guys
Now you've won again. I hope you will work to improve the city, markets and key areas in Freetown. I went there but was not impressed. You have to work very hard to improve our community and also to work on yourself as a Mayor. Live by example and Lead by example
The city is filthy and congested
Unfortunately the deterioration did not happen overnight, and climate change has made the issues even more pressing. It's great to have a mayor who is so passionately determined to make life better for Freetonians. Thank you for commenting Iris. Charine, LIDC
