Man Comes To The Door And Says: “I’m going to start working on it in a few days”

- Sitting since about 1990 this 1970 Chevelle SS396 hails from the Arlington, TX assembly plant built the first week of July 1970. Sold new at Capitol Chevrolet in Nashville, TN. Featured in code 50 Gobi beige exterior with a black vinyl roof and black bucket seat interior.
Derek at vice grip garage could drive that Chevy home in a weekend
Hell yes he could!!
agreed
Lol
I seen he is selling the cars he fixes on Ebay. That 1963 Buick he fixed was for sale on there for way to much money for a 4 door.
Derek would say a guy's got to do the right thing and get her running.
"I'm going to start working on it in a few days" -- probably what he's told his wife for the last 29 years.
Well you don't have to remind a guy every 6 months to start on a project, he will get to it when he is ready.
@Sam Pizna took me exactly 20 years to get mine on the road. Between rebuilding from a house fire taking every penny and lots of health issues after that not being able to work on it. The time off work from covid shutdown gave me time enough to get it back together and driving. Still a few little things to do before completely done but getting there and enjoying driving it.
@Sam Pizna It's a 68 Dodge Dart GT. It's built to resemble a car you would have seen in the 70s or early 80s. Restomod of sorts I guess you would say. Interior is all stock type but did a big block with a wild green exterior color.
@Sam Pizna it gets lots of comments and people tracking me down to talk about it and such. I'm going to have to upload a walk around on my channel. The interior is all new but original type seat covers foam and all. It had rats real bad. Let me tell you headliner was NOT fun coming out OR going in. Killed my knees and back. lol I feel you on the Cuda for sure. I just saw a 73 Challenger 340 rallae listed about 100 miles from me in fair rebuildable condition. Thinking about all the possibilities. Reason I noticed cause I always wanted an E body. But I just don't think I have it in me to do another one on that scale and better just focus finishing the Dart up and enjoy it. I use what I heard some time back. Just one bolt or one little thing a day and you will be surprised where it gets you. Once you see progress it sure helps too. Thanks for listening and the encouragement. 👍
Sometimes it takes a while, been working my 82 Z28 for 5 years now, little by little. With only 45k actual miles, I can't quit now.
10 months later and the transmission bell housing is still sitting on top of the roof, ignorant back woods joe bobs never cease to amaze me
That hurts to see. Let's get Vice Grip Garage on the case. Derek will fix it!
Indeed most would disregard. As a numbers-matching vehicle it should be saved. It can be saved with the right person in charge of the Resto. Ol girl should be saved.
Thanks Patrick, because of you, someone will buy this car and either fix it or use it for
parts, instead of just rotting away.
That Beautiful Beast Will Sit Right There Until The Owner Passes. Then A Family Member Will Sell It For $500.
Hope so.
To a junk yard
I'd Love to pick that up for $500 lol
That is usually the biggest obstacle, the owner may not be willing to let it go or simply want too much.
I’d give a $1000.00
I know the type, instead of selling it to someone who would actually bring it back to life, they let rot to the point of no return.
It costs big money just to get one to be a daily driver let alone a complete restore. There’s usually never a profit in these vehicles....it’s a labor of love.
its his car, get a life.
This car is Americana all the way. Despite being exceptionally rough, it's a nostalgic view into a great American story... the muscle car era. Thanks for bringing these cars to the people again Patrick!
Probably a tree fell on it caving in the roof, and the car was put out to pasture. I can't believe how rusty it is for Tennessee, it looks like it's from Michigan.
look were it was parked, any car parked on the grass will rot twice as fast , than if parked on cement!!
@@kdscrapping4452 Indeed. Moisture trapped by the grass & surrounding vegetation, humidity, rain through the roof, etc.
Probably originated in N.E. somewhere.. I was 20 when this car was new...from Pittsburgh...they started rusting when less than a year old...after just 2 winters rust holes ....we all had beaters for the winter..
They do salt the roads in Tennessee. And if this car was still running and driving on its 20th birthday it wasn't a weekend ride, it was an old beater somebody drove right up until the day it was parked. I had a 1973 I was still driving in 1993, when it developed electrical problems and also blew a head gasket.
@@kdscrapping4452 yep park in the car and Grass will destroy it. The grass holds the moisture right up under it
Such a sad situation. That car does not deserve to be abandoned and neglected. Coming from an Oldsmobile guy who's 2nd dream car is a 1970 Chevelle.
I agree, how could someone do this to such a important part of car history. I see a parts car at best.
So am I. Got a 69 cutlass and just recently bought a 70 chevelle. They both need alot of work though. Got to start somewhere.
The owner owns this car. If he wants to drop it from a helicopter, he can, it's HIS!

This Chevelle can be saved...not many people can handle this much rust but it's not that bad. Livin' in the rust belt I would buy this car in a heartbeat and restore her to factory new regardless of cost..but I'm into saving all the '70 Chevelle SS I can
Hell ya mark!!! We need more guys to think like that in the car world, I'm the same way about novas , want to save them all

And that's a fact !
@Hey Yo 👍👍👍, awesome comment
It might be fixed but it won’t be by its current owner I can guarantee that.
Only way for an owner like that to end up restoring a car like that , is to win the lottery and just send the car and the money to a resto shop.
Thank you for your time......BEAUTIFUL CAR at one time.
His dad is a television repair man; he's got an ultimate set of tools. He can fix it. (ala Jeff Spicoli)
Good one !!!

Awesome, totally awesome!!!

It is what it is, but there are restoration wizards out there, that can make this happen again. The talent does exist.
Great find as usual.... I love to see ‘em as they sit almost as much as I love to see ‘em in their glory.
Can't all be restored. This one makes such fine yard art. The owner is an artist and doesn't realize it.
“I’m just waiting for my JC Whitney catalogue to show up.”
Good Ole JC Whitney!
Unfortunately never gonna happen now!
I use to love when that catalog showed up in the mail. 🤗🤗🤗
You have to start all your future videos with “alright alright alright” lol. You sound just like Matthew McConaughey. Love the videos! Keep up the good work!
Thanks for showing it Patrick.
_Stunning example of the 'American Dream' in 1970 Chevy Chevelle SS396 guise. Sadly this stunning example will only live as a parts car for other original classics that can be brought back. Save the car!_
Very nice Vehicle for possible restoration. Factory Big Block with Automatic Transmission and Factory Air Conditioning!
can tell hes hurting on the inside seeing this,
There's a Capitol Chevrolet in Austin, TX. I worked at a hot rod garage here and we'd get a '69 Nova in originally purchased there. I know cuz the guy who brought it in was the original owner. I'm more of a '50s GM guy, but that's a damn shame that Chevelle was left out there like that. Tarps just trap moisture. You do good work with your channel.
Thanks for sharing.
The car could be restored, no problem at all...it would be the fact that it would cost more than what it would be worth. I would LOVE to see someone with deep pockets buy this car, restore it, just to show that it could be restored. I do not like to see these car go away, they are a part of America's great history, and would that be so cool to see this car bought, and step by step in video's, show the restoration of this beautiful machine! Someone please do this!
Reminds me of a car I was interested in one time, a 1970 ford Torino. The car had sat for so long that it become a land mark, and of course the guy wouldn’t sell it. Then all of a sudden I drove by and the hood was gone. Somebody had stolen the hood and the guy decided that it was finally time to sell.
First one in that color for an ss i can remember... Rode in a 69SS to School.. Can't say anything negative about the condition... Nobody wants to get rid of one while they feel they can STill Fix it ..
Have a 1964 malibu. Put it in the shop in 1989. Started working on it. Got married/ divorced. Saved money again had surgery out of work 8 weeks. Got remarried kids ,college life. Just more important things. But I do have it inside out of the weather. Needs about $15,000 to get her back to show quality. Got about 2 more years and I will be able to start on it again. Some people just don't have the resources or the know how. They just love the cars.
I have a 64SS convertible. Had it 25 years now and it's still not done but close. The thing is keep it a running driving car so you can enjoy it still. My advice is do what you can yourself it will save a lot of money. I painted my car and won several first place trophies. Only the second car I've painted is not really hard it's just hard work long hours. If you buy tools and use them one time they will pay themselves off that one time then you have tools to use or you can sell them.
looks like another job for ViseGrip Garage

Great video thank's
Thanks for your hard work finding these cars 🤟🏻
This truly is heartbreaking to see. But life does happen. We never know what the owner was going through when they had to park it. I'll just pray for better times in the future.
Amen
That's what people don't realize, I still have several classic cars and trucks, and it's been my experience that kids and grandkids take advantage and hot rod the living piss out of them . You wouldn't believe how many rear ends transmissions , frames I've fixed they just don't understand why they are setting, gee I don't know ?
Well said
Here in Brazil this car is far from gone. We can save it anytime.

@Katrina Cales yes lol.... During this time, we all have to laugh....but seriously, restoring a car like that is very expensice
@Lorne Malvo don't we wish that was true....years ago I've found alot of change in the junkyards around Chicago
This is what has made the nice survivors so valuable
When I moved from outside of Cleveland Ohio to Assville North Carolina in 1978, there were all kinds of nice cars at the used car lots that were not rusted. I bought a 1972 Buick Skylark custom with 60k miles for $2400. It was super nice cream puff. Red with white vinyl top and white interior with bucket seats, 350, 4 barrel engine. Auto trans., chrome stock custom rims with beauty rims. Nice. A month later that car lot got a 1969 Chevy Chevelle with 396 pgk., 4 speed manual trans. Blue with blue vinyl top. All original. 60k miles. $2500. Nice. I wanted to trade that Buick in on that Chevelle. They wanted that Buick plus a $1000 bucks. I did not get the Chevelle. I really loved that Buick. It fit my personalty better and kept me out of trouble. Those were the good old days.
I’m the car whisperer. I stared at the front of this car. This car is saying: “Patrick... Please don’t leave me here. You are my only hope. Don’t leave! I want to live. If anyone can help me,you can.” (dying breath)
Funny, I hear that car whispering my name and telling me the same thing-what gives?
This Car Can Be Saved, I’ve Seen A Lot Worse.
Oh yea
Reminds me of an old 54 Chevy we used to pass all the time when I was a kid. Just rotting away in these people’s yard by the road. Nobody restored it, just went to scrap yard.

Thanks For the vid; great bumper!
I still don't get why people do this... surely could have found a barn to store it in or at least a clear span shelter from FarmTek.
I have 10x20 that I bought from Harbor Freight that would have at least protected it from the elements. Wasn’t that expensive either. Such a shame what people do with muscle cars that are worth a lot of money.
That reminds me of how my ol man stores them! I hate those tarps! They just make matters worse by holding moisture in
Never know, may be some sentiment in that car such as a father son ordeal in which the son passed away in war or something and the fella cannot bear to let it go. But yes, needs to be stored better. Some people just don't get it.... Maybe he saw one on Barrett Jackson or ebay go for $$ and thinks his sitting like that decaying state it is in is worth too much... Who the hell knows.... It needs to be saved!!!
To be honest I think a lot of times people don't understand the true value of the vehicle or how bad it's deteriorating. Dreams can make a person blind to true reality as well.
its his car, worry about your own life.
Hopefully shes saved and is a story to be told wen its done, pray to the car Gods!
Patrick U hit the nail right on the head: When you said with this kinda treatment and storage we know will end up with the car ending up With it never being back on the road again!!!
U said probably the most accurate statement about the Fate of this Beautiful Gem 💎 Of a Muscle car!
U know what’s the saddest part of something like this? Is (people like this) they really don’t care for the car. Even though they have probably been offered good money by someone who would’ve totally loved the car and brought it back to life. But they will say it’s not for sell I’m gonna fix it up on day & one day never comes. So instead of selling it to someone who will get off their hind end and give it New life or someone who has the means $$$ to fix it. They’d rather be selfish & give the car a injustice by letting it rot, than to sell it and give the car itself what it deserves
(Its life back). That car deserves a better owner than that ! It should be sitting on display at car shows in its glory! Like I said in my other comment WHAT A SHAME!!!!
(PS:) I had one of the rarest Chevelles out there,
I had a 1969 300 Deluxe Chevelle all matching numbers that ran and I drove it and when I put it up for sale.....I wouldn’t sell it to Just anyone!!! I vetted my potential buyers & I waited until I found just the right person that I knew Would give it what it deserved....
ITS LIFE BACK LIKE NEW AGAIN!!!
So I found a car guy like you who him and his son would fix up classic and antique cars like new again and show them. So they became the proud owners of my 1969 300 Deluxe Chevelle.
Because if I’d have parked it and been selfish and not sold it or fixed it it would’ve looked like the one in this video and the car deserved better than that from me!
It's an air conditioned car too, those ignorant back woods Joe Bobs can really screw a gem of a car up
My 71 Cuda was nearly that bad but at least the roof wasn't smashed. It was a Michigan car with a ton of rust.
if that was a 70 or 71 Cuda, I wouldn't think twice. DONE. a walk in the park. Chevelle… I'd probably move on.
@@challengerbrant Each to their own my friend...Probably more expensive to restore the Mopar. Not a Mopar hater though; I have a 70 Challenger. :)
I never get frustrated about guys who let them rot. Too many cars out there you can buy in good condition or bad to waste time being pissed at some guy who wants to let his car rust to pieces. Every day these cars are being found in estates or guys just come to the realization that it’s time to let go. There’s always going to be cars changing hands.
Hoarders never realize that it's time to let go, they let go most of the time when they're dead and just planted 6 feet under the ground
@@oveidasinclair982 ultimately
Yes when do a ordinary working blue collar man comes across anything when he do it’s in this shape or worse and they still want a high crazy price sickning

Isn't that sad. Just goes to show that, in-time, nature reclaims ALL. I owned a 69 Buick Kenny Bell edition GS 400 back in 79-81, about the amount of time it took a 19yo crazy kid to drive it into the ground. But back then who knew they'd become classics!? 😪
There is a 70 dodge charger about 30 miles from me rotting away on the side of the road with a sign in the window NOT FOR SALE. Its been there my entire life.
I live in Tennessee and you'll meet a lot of guys that will restore a car like this over the course of 25 years. Theres an equal amount of them that are ok with just letting their classic sit in disrepair because just owning it is close enough for them. Just let them be.
Well Said
I know a guy who built one in that condition
Never was a big Chevelle fan, but this is an absolute shame! Excellent parts car tho. Thank u for sharing
Great video Patrick its a shame , You can't save them all even though we would like to . Keep up the great real work I always look forward to your videos
I see potential. Easy candidate for rusty muscle. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just safe and functional.
When I saw the shed, I said "Couldn't be that bad." But then....
All those sirens you can here in the background called 911 to send emergency to the chevelle to help bring it back to life 😁👍
To some people a car is just a car. They drove it until it ran no more then parked it and moved on to something else. it's a 1970 car and was driven and enjoyed until at least 1991 there's no great loss, it served its purpose. Only car guys will mourn death.
That is very sad waste of a Chevy and that’s coming from a Buick guy😪
Think she may need more than that can of WD-40 that is on the crushed roof to get her started...
Ain't it??!! Unbelievable brother!!
I HAVE A BUICK REGAL T/TYPE. IM GONNA FIX ONE DAY
He, I'm running Honda and even "I" think this is a fucking waste. If you love cars at all this is a crime.
I know this car and the last time I saw it driving on the road was in 1989 I was 10 years old
Was this car in clarksville
No, that would have been the last train
Brian is that car owner a very old guy
So sad, but so common. My good friend was a 55/56/57 Chevy lover and he found a 57 Bel Air sitting next to a house not far from where we worked one day when he went out for lunch and took a back road he rarely drove. The car looked to be in decent shape when he first saw it but you could tell it already hadn't been moved in years. He knocked on the door and asked about it. The owner said he planned on restoring it. We would drive by the house once in awhile and it never moved. Year after year went by and the car sank lower in the grass and dirt. He'd stop probably once a year and politely ask the owner if he'd consider selling but always got the same answer. Finally, we drove by after about 15 years of this and the car pretty much disintegrated in the yard. Wasn't even worth part salvage by then. 😪
I was maybe 7 years old when in my driveway was parked a black 1970 Chevelle SS with that cowling hood sat. Being only a kid even my breath was taken away at the site of this car in my families driveway in 1972. It wasn't ours it belonged to someone visiting my family and while they were all inside I was in the driveway with my face smashed up against the driver side window taking it all in. I remember heating this thing cooling with the tick tick tick tick sounds from cooling metal. It was such a beautiful car.
I am a Mopar guy and I had to stop watching after a few minutes, what a waste of a beautiful car, that beige is more then likely a rare color.
I'll tell you why it was parked. You remember the 80s? Lots of SS cars still around for decent prices. Problem in my area they were all rotted out and the values didn't make people save them there was no need finding a better one was fairly easy. I used to cut up and scrap what today would be very valuable cars but back then they were just scrap.
That's true! During the gas crunch as they called it gas hogs were not worth anything especially big block cars.
I always love for you to post brother
I would rebuild it if he would sell it bud
This is sad to see for sure , I appreciate everyone keeping it as positive as possible considering the damage left done to this great car .
PGN doesn't have it easy ,and we all come here to see what he has found .
Looks like at least 143 guys here could fix it No problem, but a couple guys have said "it's not for sale"
There are plenty left out there that ARE for sale , appx.47,500 SS were sold that year
This one is in purgatory for now.
I would buy it.
I’ve been trying to get this car for 15 years. He ain’t selling.😢
Did you give him a number?
Money ain’t nothing to him
We all have things like that in our lives. For me, it's a 1980 Z50 Honda that my dad got me in 1982. Never sell it! Doesn't matter what condition its in. Not for sale!
This is his baby. You can have it after he's gone.
People that do that stuff don't deserve having them cars to begin with
That's so sad. I hope someone with the financial means finds it in their heart to purchase, and completely restore this little piece of history!
Ive had my eyes on a 72 454 SS 4 speed, functional hood, black interior all moldy now, but right down the road from me for a while now. Same story of fixing it up soon... since probably the 90s... atleast that ones under a tin roof but the floors have seen better days
A person like myself that dreams of owning a 70 this makes me sad
Exactly!
Anything can be restored.
How much money do you want to dump into it?
How much will remain original?

About 6 cents a pound currently
Sad, but that has happened so many times when an owner's dreams are bigger than their aspirations. I tried to buy an Olds Rally 350 that I watched over the years move from a guys garage to his back yard and then out to the field behind his house. This was way back in 1991. I figured since it had moved out to the field the guy had given up on it. I was wrong. He said he was going to restore it but still offered to sell it to me for $8500. That was about what a perfect example was selling for back then so I passed. I figured it was worth about $1500 at the time. It was far from perfect but was restorable. The guy died in 2002 and left the car to his son after never doing anything with it. His son disassembled it with the intention of restoring it in honor of his father. One problem, the son had no idea how to restore a car and he also had no money. The last I time I heard anything about the car was in 2015. It was still in pieces and many had been lost. The son was needing money and had it for sale for $5000. If it had been left alone and stored inside for all those years it would have been worth that or more by 2015. I heard he sold it for $1500. No idea where it is now.
Wow??!! Unbelievable!! That is a very sad ending for a special car!!
396 engine is a collector by itself.

I've saved two 70 Chevelle's in about the same shape , including 1 that I put a roof on. Its not that bad now that they make every single panel new. I have the skillset to do this work , but for someone to pay me hourly to restore a car in this shape is financial suicide unless you had some crazy sentimental attachment and deep pockets. This is the kind of stuff I like to save because I love them , and because I'm a glutton for punishment! I sure am glad the guy is going to start on it in a few days!!! Damn shame.

I made 3 offers over 15 years on a 70 Malibu 350 sitting in Bath county Virginia. Owner said his son would be driving soon and they were gonna "fix'er up". Then, "my son is getting out of the service soon, we're gonna fix'er up". Then, "my son and his wife just had their first baby, as soon as they get back on their feet, we're gonna fix'er up". Last time I saw the car a tree was growing up thru the engine compartment and had pushed the corner of the hood up. The tires were all flat and the car had sunk to the rims. One day soon, one day soon.
Keep it positive! I'm POSITIVE, this thing is dead and ready for burial. Buy yourself something at the auction and DRIVE it TODAY!
To the right person it's still restorable, hell I'd fix it, it would definitely be worth the money
Open to the rain like that, it will be severely rotted.
This is FAR from being a "parts car" . Especially with a vinyl top, the roof can easily be put back to shape, and the rust repaired. I'm a Body work and paint guy for 38 years.
I can appreciate your occupation, for the simple fact that not too many young uns are interested in the nasty and dirty job of old car body restoration!!

The titanic has a better shot at being restored than this car when it’s stored like that.
This heap will sit there until the owner dies. Then his heirs will sell it for $20,000.
The only way that owner would do something with it , is if he won the lottery and someone said he should restore that car , and let the money and car go to a resto shop.
