  • This video is part of the DVD "Air Show Special 2011", which is produced by the Swedish aviation film crew "TeamM", of which I'm part. For a few hours in the summer of 2011 we got to film this beautiful airplane and also do an interview with it's owner in Sweden, Mr. Jon Roth. That summer I also fell in love with another airplane, the S-38 Sikorsky, owned and operated by Mr. Tom Schrade. Enjoy! /Tille, TeamM

Just thought I would give an update on N2801. We still own the plane and we moved back to the USA about 5 years ago, bringing the Staggerwing to our new home at Willis Gliderport in South Florida. It is presently undergoing a full restoration - which we knew it would need when we originally bought it years ago. Lots of wood repairs to the wings, tail and control surfaces now complete and covered through clear. I have been working on the airframe for the past year, repainting the tubular structure and replacing about 75% of the fuselage wood. Every single glue joint needed cleaning and regluing - 80+ years later. Most plywood is new, but I have been able to salvage almost all of the solid wood. My intention was always to keep as much of the Beechcraft wooden parts as safely possible.
All the 1930s cloth covered wiring is gone, the panel is new and functional and I have been working on replacing all of the control cables. Normally this is not big deal, but I somehow got it into my head that I needed to ditch the modern nicopress sleeves and to revert to the original factory/industry method of using a 5 tuck navy splice.... quickly turns a 5 minute job into a 2 hour job - more when you screw it up and have to start over!
Still have wiring, sheet metal work, covering and interior to go!
    Any year now.
    Best
    Jon

Thank you Mister Jon for the great update. We love hearing about these interesting fixes and problems you encounter. It would be great to hear about the planes performance data. Additionally, if you wouldn’t mind how many in existence and in general what is the market value as a collectable, if thats not too intrusive.
      Thank you.

Flew ours with a 450 P&W, 385 Jacobs and 345 Jacobs. Amazingly performance in the air was very similar, but economy greatly favored the small Jacobs. Learned to fly in that plane. Was an albatross meaning horrible on the ground but incredible in the air.

I worked in the Aeronautical Engineering department at Beech in Wichita, Kansas. We were very proud of the fact that the Beech 17 was the first aircraft in the world to adhere to laminar flow. The Beech 17 could not be improved using Navier Stokes equations. Noting the design of the Beech 17 was conducted with slide rules and brute force mathmatics in the mind. We all sat in awe of the truly great engineering of Walter Beech.

Always great to watch a Staggerwing fly. Actually though...Beech resigned from Curtis-Wright, (they had acquired Travel Air in 1929) in Feb/March 1932 and returned to Wichita to start building the Model 17 in the closed Cessna factory.
