Seems to me that Clamp is very good at doing bittersweet stories and Rayearth seems to be no exception. The girls kill Zagato in their final battle with him leading to the princess ready to destroy the world over it, forcing the girls to kill her too. Yeah, they saved the world, but there probably could've been a better way, but what's past is past.
That would actually be a great premise for the remake. The girls are our girls from the og show, but are sent back in time with bits and pieces from what happened in the first ending. So...try again?
Technically Emeraude had the power to just be free for being the pillar cause S2 Hikaru ended up being the pillar cause emeraude is well dead..... And what did hikaru do? Abolish the need for a pillar and have the citizen of cephiro to fight thier fate not like they dont have the power to protect the land from monsters or anything lol..... Yeah so emeraude could have been free from being the pillar should she wish to.
honestly my problem with a princess is that she summoned three people from another world got them involved and otherworldly business rip them away from their homes made them go through trials I could’ve had them killed and got them hurt when all this bitch needed to do was wish and pray that they found a new pillar so that she can be with her love her whole show and the premise of this world is that if you weld it in wish it it’ll happen, so all she literally had to do was wish for a new pillar to replace her but we need drama i guess 🧏🏾♀️🤷🏽♀️

As a sailor moon kid I was obsessed with rayearth! My friend somehow had Japanese VHS tapes of a few episodes from both seasons and I was hooked. I eventually got all of them from a video store. I always indentified with fuu, the intelligent healer, but as I’ve grown older I feel for umi. I love how the villains were named after cars and Caldina deserves more love. I always wanted to play as illusionists in role playing games because of her. Ughhh thanks for making this retrospect. What a pleasant surprise.
Magic Knight Rayearth! The anime I watched as a child that taught me that not all fantasy shows get purely happy endings! 😂 Good times! Edit: I love many things about this anime and while nostalgia probably has a big part in that, I don’t see myself disliking really any part of it any time soon.
For years I thought this series was called "Magical Knight Rayearth". Oops. Also, CLAMP's art is SO charming. I absolutely love seeing a manga or anime and know it is a CLAMP project based on how it looks.
I've heard whispers of 'Rayearth' time and time again but you made it sound like the coolest thing I had ever seen. That plot twist with Zagato and Esperona? WOW! I'd love for this to get a 3D remake like 'Trigun Stampede' as you said... but I'd love an animation climate where an untested IP can get more than twelve episodes before dying horribly. But yeah, we need more screen time for these magical girls having cool sword fights and piloting giant robots. Please do make videos on the other parts of 'Rayearth'. I'm really happy that you shared this. :D
It's very surprising that Rayearth didn't get a lot of love here in the states when shows like Sailor Moon and Cardcaptors did so well. It's really a show that would have been perfect to have on Toonami back in the day. I stumbled upon it when I was in high school and watched all the episodes on CZcams. Didn't finish the second season though lol. But yes this show could definitely use a revisit. I know they made some pretty good looking figma figures of the girls a few years ago but other than that haven't seen much merchandise love for the series.
Well actually, it WAS going to be on Toonami, but Fox Kids bought the rights first to keep Toonami from getting it. And to add insult to injury, they just sat on the rights until they expired instead of using them themselves.

I share a Birthday with Hikaru and started watching the show when I was 13 or 14 years old. I've always aligned heavily with her character, from being tiny and childlike to absolutely adoring animals. Hikaru was my nickname in middle school.
Oh shit, I remember this anime. One of the few anime that I watch that is dubbed in my native language. This and Fushugi Yuugi. The nostalgia is real in this one.
FY was Inuyasha if it was written by John Green. Aside from that one scene we shall not mention that happens to the best friend the moment she enters the play
Wow. Even with no further context of this story than your review, Emeraude screaming Zagato's name at 10:12 is utterly heartwrenching. And seeing all the girls crying at the end is equally saddening. In a split-second, the three of them disappeared, only to reappear with enough emotional trauma to pay off a therapist's mortgage three times over. Wonder if this was the inspiration for Puella Magica Madoka. I'd certainly like to see this show get updated. This is the closest thing we'll ever see to a crossover between Sailor Moon and Power Rangers, so it deserves to be known for that uniqueness alone. That and the star-crossed love story.
I mean Rayearth is certainly why Madoka isn't that special lmao. Other reasons include the ending of Magical Princess Minky Momo and the manga version of Sailor Moon, or even just the original uncensored version of the 90s Anime in some parts. Magical Girl series have always been capable of being dark. I don't even think the idea of the mentor mascot being untrustworthy or their being something not entirely on the up and up with the magic system is all that new either. If your only experience with the genre is censored dubs or anime aimed mainly at little kids like Doremi, then of course Madoka seems dark and subersive.

At the end of 2022, I found a Japanese copy of the Saturn game at a retro game store near me. I ended up buying it since I was aware of the franchise and of the game (the English version was the Saturn's last game in North America and is one of its "holy grails"). I'm very glad I did, because it got me hooked on the franchise! As cliched as this may sound, the story and characters gave me a lot of hope during a time I really needed some in my life. The studio for the anime created several anime FMVs specifically for the Saturn game, and at least in the JP version, the main anime cast voiced their characters throughout the adventure. Another neat detail, did you know that Sega made limited edition Rayearth-themed Game Gear systems in Japan? They come in all red with the Rayearth logo and art of Mokona on them.
Fun fact the manga, Anime and OVA is the first case of the CLAMP multiverse. As each version is canon. The OVA in particular shares it's reality with Card captor Sakura and XXX Holic.
I haven't technically seen Rayearth. But they do feature in Super Robot Wars 30 presenting a summarised version of their story. They were cool units and their story was the most interesting to me. Yeah this review elevated what I already knew of the series. Thou now I'm a little dissapointed most of Zelgatos minions didn't make it. As far as I remember its only G-string and the shapeshifter one. That one its only on their fox form all the time. Anyway. Yeah. Rayearth sounds cool. It would be awesome to have a mordern studio take a shot at it.
Whenever someone asks me what my all time favorite anime. I always says Magic Knight Rayearth. I am a 90s kid from the Philippines, I had the Filipino version of the OST as my ring tone for years. As a Gunpla girlie I always wished for the Rune Gods model kits and I was over the moon when Good Smile Company released not just the 3 Rune Gods but also the combination Rune God.
Watching this anime, it is like you watch and play an RPG game, where you constantly level up and constantly get power ups. I appreciate, that you have reviewed this underrated gem. 😄 Just asking, do you know the anime called Kaleido Star? If not, then I recommend it for you, to give it a try. I loved it as a kid. 😄
I actual remember reading the first 2 volumes of manga from local library but thats all they had T^T I do love the 90s style animation but i'll be honest, even after this review am in no rush to see it. Think i would watch if they rebooted it just to compare it. Have to ask but i see you use the dub footage in this and last anime you reviewed, is that your preferred way to watch or just easier to get and edit footage? (sorry, don't want to make this a dub vs sub debate, but am curious. everyone one should be allowed to watch there media they way they like best without judgment, is my view).
I do always prefer to watch dubbed if I can. I like a lot of English VA's! I don't mind reading subtitles, in fact I usually have them on everything I watch anyways, but I feel like for comedic moments the dub lands the jokes better for me. When it comes to making videos though, I would prefer not to have subtitles on the screen just because it makes it easier for me to use shots for different contextual moments. :)

I finished watching season 1. I thought it started off boring but after a while it got interesting. The ending was like "what?!?" Though i think i regret watching it all in one setting because of the flashing lights.
My favorite cross over of all times(not just in anime or manga, but for anything) comes from Magic Knight Rayearth. Which is Hikaru who is in Angelic Layer. I mean, yeah she doesn't speak for the entire series, and isn't technically even a person, but she becomes a total badass. And knowing her real personality from Rayearth just makes it all the more epic.
I just finished the first season on Tubi and I quite enjoyed it. The visuals were a great highlight for me as I just love how beautiful classic cel anime looked. It also made me nostalgic for the anime I used to watch on Toonami and Kids WB. I noticed when the girls would be in their chibi forms, Hikaru would have cat ears (and a tail, I think) for some reason? I was so not prepared for the ending twist between Zagato and Emeraude, even as I was starting to piece it together by the end. I couldn't help but feel sorry for the 3 girls, as they were basically forced to take part in a mercy killing. Looking forward to watching the next season.
Yessss I want a remake/reboot of Rayearth so much!! A switch RPG would be fun too. This is an old, but underrated gem, and a really fun isekai anime. Studio Orange is a good choice for a potential reboot.
I remember going through such a huge CLAMP phase in middle school. If there was a book made by Clamp that arrived in my library, I’d snatched it before it even had the chance to go to the shelves. ❤❤❤❤
And the voice of Zagato/ Lantis voiced Han Solo in Star Wars Battlefront 2. Alcyone and Umi/Emeraude VAs started with Robotech. Ascot is Izzy from Digimon.
Also the Magic Knights also appeared in the PS4 Game Super Robot Wars T as playable main characters as well as their Rune Gods and some of the villains as well and Princess Esmeraude also appears too.
I won't lie, I am a CLAMP SIMP. I love all of their work, I love that they reuse characters across all their stuff, and develop them beyond just them as kids, or teens, or adults. If you have not watched anything from CLAMP, pick any of what The Judgmental Critter said at the start ❤❤❤❤

I love this anime MKR I have both seasons on DVD and Manga. I love the beautiful celestial imagery and backgrounds. MKR also has that dark and heartwarming Don Bluth vibe to it.
This was a show Jason demarco when he was green lighting anime for toonami & he was struggling the japanese licencing and legal team but instead they gave him Sailor Moon which was a hit but to this very day he regrets not getting this aired on toonami.
Okay, coming back to this AFTER watching the first season... All I have to say is WOW, was that twist foreshadowed well. Except for Furio, who didn't know, all of the characters the girls met kept telling them that they needed to save Cephiro. But none of them ever said anything about saving Emerade. This show really is a hidden gem that needs more love. If only RWBY did a twist like this.
I FELL in love with this anime 2021, I seriously watched it at the right time in my last teenage summer. I remembered after finishing the ova I was so bummed there wasn't more. Does the manga continue the story? Also we def need videos on Season 2 and the OVA. And another point I really loved about the show that stuck out was the music! Not just the op and ed, but the theme that played whenever they triumphed or powered up.
Yeah, I stopped here cause the new announcement put me in a Rayearth mood lol. From what I've seen however, the new anime hasn't been confirmed to be a remake, but a "new adaptation", which likely just means a direct adaptation of the manga. That said, it would be preferable to see a whole new story. I don't feel like modern animation will be able to live up to the vibrancy and liveliness of the 90s anime, but I still look forward to it. And about the "new games" part, Rayearth has been featured in the Super Robot Wars series, and may continue to be in future installments! They were in SRW T (2019), and SRW 30 (2021); both have English translations, and the latter is available worldwide on PC. Not an ad, I swear.
I honest loved my time to watch it I found it charming from rewatching and reviewing. I would love for the series to be remade And the second season is the perfect send off to the series
Just watched this video and I really liked it. I especially liked the segment on the video games, though I was a little surprised you didn't at least mention Super Robot Wars. While it's not specifically a Rayearth game, the show was featured in two of the most recent installments, T and 30, with the main plot being mixed in with other isekai mecha like Aura Battler Dunbine and Knight's and Magic. Still, I really enjoyed this video and I can't wait to see your review of Season 2.
I get that you might make a whole separate video for the OAV but my heart sank a little when you didn't show my favorite part. There's a quick shot after the mech battle in the first episode. It's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it kind of thing. In the OAV mechs are controlled by their bodies acting out the moves. Or their minds are in the robots and they are depicted as floating in an void instead of a traditional cockpit. Either way their bodies are the robots. They actually move differently and more organically than they do in the anime. Anime is actually really good about this. Gundam is an expert at having the mechas move differently depending on how they're controlled. During the fight the lion robot is cool looking and stoic. It's all punches and cool stances. Buy after the battle is over there's a moment when the main character is super happy to see that her friends are ok. She holds up her hands in a feminine way. Then they cut to the the f***ing mech doing the exact same thing.. IT'S.. HALARIOUS... seeing this magical instrument of war in the cute anime girl pose with the shiny metal lion face still looking ferocious unable to correctly emote. I absolutely lost it. I think it's one of the funniest things in all of anime.
this one I really love reading back in high school since it looks cool with the artwork, but the plot twist is fantastic and unexpected. I highly recommend to newcomers who love new magical girl anime.

I finished watching Rayearth recently, read the manga first, and its just brilliant! I particularly enjoyed the second season and how it references Iczer-1, that 80s OVA, it really is amazing how dissimilar the two shows are in tone and style or even the demographic and yet Hikaru is Iczer-1, Nova is Iczer-2, etc. Very emotional with good psychology lessons - respect love as it is a force that can destroy worlds, and learn to forgive yourself and have hope, as that also destroys worlds. Didn't care for the OVA tho, felt it was tragedy porn.
I watched this show a while ago (for some reason in part due to the sega saturn game being so expensive lol) and quite liked it. really did not expect that ending to be such a gut punch. I'd love to see it be brought back today too! ...and yeah, the thing about the girls' weapons starting out as different kinds but later on evolving to just being almost the exact same sword really bugged me as well
I'm definitely down with more wholesome Rayearth content. I have a Moderoid of Windam, it'll be great when I finally get to build it. And the name differences in the Saturn game are due to licensing fuckery. Clamp and or TMS and or whoever had the western rights to the Rayearth anime demanded that Working Designs (the company that was localizing it), pay INDIVIDUALLY for the rights to use all the character names. They did extremely reluctantly pay for Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu, but were forced to come up with soundalikes for the rest.
i was a big fan of Rayearth's manga as a teen, the manga is my most favorite out of any Clap's works, actually. haven't get into the anime beside the god tier sound track, but i agree, this series needs a modern reboot!
In the Philippine dub, the names are Umi: Marina Hikaru: Ruby Fuu: Muni-Muni I thought it had something to do with their color scheme, but "muni-muni" means daydream. So it just sounds weird.
My only problem and its more of a nipick of the japanese fantasy genre as is, all thier weapons and armor are basic medieval european weapons and armor I mean its a little weird when you actually think about it
I do like the idea of there being a remake of Rayearth, for at least the animation being updated for such a big story that I loved when I was young. I would like the ending of the series to be a little different, cause there was extra things they added to the anime that I liked and then things that were put in there that made it so different from the manga where it kind of made me angry... but I'll cross my fingers and hope for the best.
The reason the second season is so different is because Claamp itself told the people making it to change it so they wouldn't spoil the end of the manga

I believe that the only chance a pillar can set new rules for the world. So the princess probably couldn't change anything in her situation.

I do love the 90s style animation but i'll be honest, even after this review am in no rush to see it. Think i would watch if they rebooted it just to compare it.
Have to ask but i see you use the dub footage in this and last anime you reviewed, is that your preferred way to watch or just easier to get and edit footage? (sorry, don't want to make this a dub vs sub debate, but am curious. everyone one should be allowed to watch there media they way they like best without judgment, is my view).
I do always prefer to watch dubbed if I can. I like a lot of English VA's! I don't mind reading subtitles, in fact I usually have them on everything I watch anyways, but I feel like for comedic moments the dub lands the jokes better for me. When it comes to making videos though, I would prefer not to have subtitles on the screen just because it makes it easier for me to use shots for different contextual moments. :)

@@thejudgmentalcritter6584 Finally, someone into anime that isn't a dub hater. I was never into the whole purist thing anyway. The actors and translators work hard transitioning the content into their own tongues, and they get no respect at all.

I finished watching season 1. I thought it started off boring but after a while it got interesting. The ending was like "what?!?"
Though i think i regret watching it all in one setting because of the flashing lights.

My favorite cross over of all times(not just in anime or manga, but for anything) comes from Magic Knight Rayearth. Which is Hikaru who is in Angelic Layer. I mean, yeah she doesn't speak for the entire series, and isn't technically even a person, but she becomes a total badass. And knowing her real personality from Rayearth just makes it all the more epic.
I just finished the first season on Tubi and I quite enjoyed it.
The visuals were a great highlight for me as I just love how beautiful classic cel anime looked. It also made me nostalgic for the anime I used to watch on Toonami and Kids WB. I noticed when the girls would be in their chibi forms, Hikaru would have cat ears (and a tail, I think) for some reason?
I was so not prepared for the ending twist between Zagato and Emeraude, even as I was starting to piece it together by the end. I couldn't help but feel sorry for the 3 girls, as they were basically forced to take part in a mercy killing.
Looking forward to watching the next season.
Yessss I want a remake/reboot of Rayearth so much!! A switch RPG would be fun too. This is an old, but underrated gem, and a really fun isekai anime. Studio Orange is a good choice for a potential reboot.
I remember going through such a huge CLAMP phase in middle school. If there was a book made by Clamp that arrived in my library, I’d snatched it before it even had the chance to go to the shelves. ❤❤❤❤

And the voice of Zagato/ Lantis voiced Han Solo in Star Wars Battlefront 2. Alcyone and Umi/Emeraude VAs started with Robotech. Ascot is Izzy from Digimon.

Chobitz, I finally know the name of the manga. Other than Mew Mew Cafe, I wanted to look into this and the Tsubasa chronicles.
Also the Magic Knights also appeared in the PS4 Game Super Robot Wars T as playable main characters as well as their Rune Gods and some of the villains as well and Princess Esmeraude also appears too.
Fun fact: This series is one of the things that inspired Amphibia.

I love this anime MKR I have both seasons on DVD and Manga. I love the beautiful celestial imagery and backgrounds. MKR also has that dark and heartwarming Don Bluth vibe to it.
This anime was the bomb when I first saw it 20 years ago. I don't think it has aged well.

This was a show Jason demarco when he was green lighting anime for toonami & he was struggling the japanese licencing and legal team but instead they gave him Sailor Moon which was a hit but to this very day he regrets not getting this aired on toonami.
Okay, coming back to this AFTER watching the first season...
All I have to say is WOW, was that twist foreshadowed well. Except for Furio, who didn't know, all of the characters the girls met kept telling them that they needed to save Cephiro. But none of them ever said anything about saving Emerade. This show really is a hidden gem that needs more love.
If only RWBY did a twist like this.
I FELL in love with this anime 2021, I seriously watched it at the right time in my last teenage summer. I remembered after finishing the ova I was so bummed there wasn't more. Does the manga continue the story? Also we def need videos on Season 2 and the OVA. And another point I really loved about the show that stuck out was the music! Not just the op and ed, but the theme that played whenever they triumphed or powered up.
Yeah, I stopped here cause the new announcement put me in a Rayearth mood lol. From what I've seen however, the new anime hasn't been confirmed to be a remake, but a "new adaptation", which likely just means a direct adaptation of the manga. That said, it would be preferable to see a whole new story. I don't feel like modern animation will be able to live up to the vibrancy and liveliness of the 90s anime, but I still look forward to it.
And about the "new games" part, Rayearth has been featured in the Super Robot Wars series, and may continue to be in future installments! They were in SRW T (2019), and SRW 30 (2021); both have English translations, and the latter is available worldwide on PC. Not an ad, I swear.

Just watched this video and I really liked it. I especially liked the segment on the video games, though I was a little surprised you didn't at least mention Super Robot Wars. While it's not specifically a Rayearth game, the show was featured in two of the most recent installments, T and 30, with the main plot being mixed in with other isekai mecha like Aura Battler Dunbine and Knight's and Magic.
Still, I really enjoyed this video and I can't wait to see your review of Season 2.

I get that you might make a whole separate video for the OAV but my heart sank a little when you didn't show my favorite part. There's a quick shot after the mech battle in the first episode. It's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it kind of thing.
In the OAV mechs are controlled by their bodies acting out the moves. Or their minds are in the robots and they are depicted as floating in an void instead of a traditional cockpit. Either way their bodies are the robots. They actually move differently and more organically than they do in the anime. Anime is actually really good about this. Gundam is an expert at having the mechas move differently depending on how they're controlled.
During the fight the lion robot is cool looking and stoic. It's all punches and cool stances. Buy after the battle is over there's a moment when the main character is super happy to see that her friends are ok. She holds up her hands in a feminine way.
Then they cut to the the f***ing mech doing the exact same thing.. IT'S.. HALARIOUS... seeing this magical instrument of war in the cute anime girl pose with the shiny metal lion face still looking ferocious unable to correctly emote. I absolutely lost it. I think it's one of the funniest things in all of anime.
this one I really love reading back in high school since it looks cool with the artwork, but the plot twist is fantastic and unexpected. I highly recommend to newcomers who love new magical girl anime.

I finished watching Rayearth recently, read the manga first, and its just brilliant! I particularly enjoyed the second season and how it references Iczer-1, that 80s OVA, it really is amazing how dissimilar the two shows are in tone and style or even the demographic and yet Hikaru is Iczer-1, Nova is Iczer-2, etc. Very emotional with good psychology lessons - respect love as it is a force that can destroy worlds, and learn to forgive yourself and have hope, as that also destroys worlds. Didn't care for the OVA tho, felt it was tragedy porn.
I watched this show a while ago (for some reason in part due to the sega saturn game being so expensive lol) and quite liked it. really did not expect that ending to be such a gut punch. I'd love to see it be brought back today too!
...and yeah, the thing about the girls' weapons starting out as different kinds but later on evolving to just being almost the exact same sword really bugged me as well
I'm definitely down with more wholesome Rayearth content. I have a Moderoid of Windam, it'll be great when I finally get to build it.
And the name differences in the Saturn game are due to licensing fuckery. Clamp and or TMS and or whoever had the western rights to the Rayearth anime demanded that Working Designs (the company that was localizing it), pay INDIVIDUALLY for the rights to use all the character names. They did extremely reluctantly pay for Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu, but were forced to come up with soundalikes for the rest.
i was a big fan of Rayearth's manga as a teen, the manga is my most favorite out of any Clap's works, actually. haven't get into the anime beside the god tier sound track, but i agree, this series needs a modern reboot!

I do like the idea of there being a remake of Rayearth, for at least the animation being updated for such a big story that I loved when I was young. I would like the ending of the series to be a little different, cause there was extra things they added to the anime that I liked and then things that were put in there that made it so different from the manga where it kind of made me angry... but I'll cross my fingers and hope for the best.
The reason the second season is so different is because Claamp itself told the people making it to change it so they wouldn't spoil the end of the manga
