Got a 05 outback xt, bought from a engineer in Colorado springs. Modded right, was smokin under boost, put a 09 sti short block, turns out the rings were not broken just bad exhaust valve guides . Now I got a nice sleeper , besides the BBS wheels it just looks like a outback.

Great video, I just picked up my 05 gt last night but it overheads occasionally, no coolant bubbles, no leaks or smoking, and drive ability doesn’t change at all when it’s overheating (coolant) the lower rad hose is not getting work but I’ve already replaced thermostat. Any comments? Awesome manual wagon btw 🤘🏾
I had a daily 05 legacy for about 1 and a half now. Its been good to me. I drive about 2 hours to school and she has been holding up good. Just had to recently replace the cv axle boot.
Looking at getting at 05 Legacy 2.5GT Limited. This video was great and gave me a few things to look out for. Anything else that I should be asking the dealership about or looking at myself?
Great car my 07 Legacy GT has 225k and the engine runs like when I first bought it at 100k. Only issues I've had is normal part replacement from age. Also Valve cover gaskets are driving me crazy I have replaced them twice and they still leak so I keep an eye on my oil and it still runs fine. Head Gaskets have never been replaced and don't need to be as long as your take care of your car. Only older subarus have head gasket issues (99-04 I believe) because they manufactured the gaskets using the wrong material that wore out quickly around 100k. I'll never sell this beautiful car, good luck finding one nowadays!
Most NA Subarus with EJs are notorious for head gasket issues. The turbo cars have mls head gaskets and are more prone to ringland issues. That's solid mileage for an ej255. You sure are right about taking care of them! Thanks for watching!

I just bought a 2008 legacy 2.5i Limited with only 63.5k miles. They dealership just put on new belts, tires, power steering pump and has all new fluids and oil. It has dings and scratches which is expected for a 14 year old car but the interior is in excellent condition. I paid 79 hundred, which granted, is steep, but comparable vehicles with over twice the miles are going for upwards of the same price because the market is so crazy right now. So I felt as long as I keep it well maintained and keep an eye out for all the usual culprits for this model I'll have it for a long time! Love it so far.
I found a stock 06 legacy gt 2.5 one owner 73k miles. I'm going into my last year of high school and really want to get something with a bit of speed and manual transmission should I make a move on the legacy or find something else? Subaru diehard here.
I would say, if you have the time and money to work on it, 73k is still pretty low mileage. Realize that you will work on it or pay someone else to though. Awesome cars just a bit finicky at times. Mines is running again today after a few weeks of being down.
I just wish you could buy a new Subaru Legacy that looked as good as the 4th gen and had a conventional automatic transmission instead of a CVT! As it is, I'm hoping my naturally aspirated '07 Legacy makes it to 200k (167k miles currently, second set of head gaskets, body looks great except I'm starting to get a rust bubble exactly where you got yours by the rear wheel well.) The new Honda Accords are pretty sweet...wish they'd add an AWD option but I'm thinking they don't want to cannibalize Acura TLX sales.

Having owned 2 subarus and going to get a third this might as well be a general what problems to look for in all subarus. Had an 04 baja that rotted and was just beat to hell when i got it, went off the road on some ice with bad tires too and it kept going even after that. 270k miles and still kickin. Then i had 2011 wrx for 6 years and it rotted in that same spot almost. The side skirts were holding a bunch of rust at the pinch weld there and behind the wheel. Wouldve kept going but a dumbass driver hit my back left wheel and it just destroyed all the rust back there raising the damage costs and they totalled the car. Now im looking to have a really fun time and looking at a built spec b.
Bought our second 4th gen Legacy a few weeks ago. An ‘05 H6 model with a little under 40.000 miles on the clock. Completely in love with it. Hope it’s as problem free as the previous car.
Nice, such a great engine, I miss mine. (If you don't know already) if you like to drive it hard the gears are not the best to hold up against the torque over time. Also look out for the split at the front of the air chamber intake where it connects to the manifold. It should be ok now but when you get upto 50,000 miles defo look out for it or you will need to get a loan out to pay for all the petrol. Change the power steering pump rubber ring, right side engine pully. Obviously replaces all fluids, sparks, start replacing bushings 55,000 onwards and get a bigger rear sway bar. Your car will feel like new unless you struts are blown. Always be preventative with scheduled maintenance, change you trans oil way before what Subaru states and you can get to 200,000 miles .
I bought an ‘05 OBXT a month ago. Basically the same car in a wagon version. It came modified with a few things and the temperature gauge goes up a bit past midline when I drive it hard for a little while. I plan on overhauling the motor eventually..
Mines a wagon as well, the obxt just has more clearance and has the body cladding. I love the obxt fenders. Looks so awesome lowered. Overhauling an engine isn't fun but will give you all the piece of mind! Thanks for stopping by!
@@drivechannelyt Hey, I figured I'd let you know what happened to my OBXT 2 years later. I ended up swapping a jdm ej20X 2.0L in it myself. I had to modify a few things like transferring over the USDM exhaust gears to the new 20X motor and kept using the USDM ECU/engine harness with dual exhaust AVCS off. NO major mods, everything else is stock. The car is still on the road today and it's working great.
Only problem I have had on my 2006 na 2.0r is rust, the slave sylinder for the clutch and some seals for the doors and front window. And rear wiper motor don't work. Otherwise perfect car, no engine problem or electrical faults. The engine have a small tune for 195hp (165 stock) and a aftermarket head gasket seal for obvious reasons.

If the timing belt and or head gaskets have been done that's not bad mileage and would prob be fairly reliable. All my NA Subarus have been super reliable. although I'd try to talk that price down, does seem a little steep but the car market is crazy right now. Also, you could ask them to get a compression and leak down test if they really wanna get 6.5k. that would give you some piece of mind at least. Thanks for watching!
Get a Toyota or honda. Old subaru fall apart from head gaskets, valve covers, transmissions , wheel bearings, differentials, electrics fall apart. And if in rust belt the frames fall apart.
I really wanted a 2006 or 07 Subaru legacy 2.5i limited with around 113k mileage I could’ve had that but it was bought already instead I purchased a 2011 Subaru Impreza 2.5i premium with 142k mileage and I put a $500 down payment but am gonna pay with cash for the rest of the car idk what to do wether to stick with this one or try to find a legacy I want the reason why I didn’t wait for legacy’s to pop up is because cars here go really fast where I live if you guys have any tips to help me decide please help

Looking at a 2006 Legacy 2.5, it has 200k miles on it but the guy who bought it is a mechanic and he rebuilt the entire engine, including timing belt, water and oil pumps, new head gaskets, new main and rod bearings, new valves, new radiator, and new valves. He wants 4,250 for it. Is this a good price? seems like it might be a little too good to be true for how much he spent on fixing it

Really intuitive video! It's also worth pointing out that you live in roughly the same area as I do, the dreaded Upstate of New York.. I'm more South, toward the Elmira - Corning area. I have been religiously pondering the idea of buying an 2005 Subaru Legacy GT Wagon with the five-speed manual, similar to the one you have. Long story short, I walked away from the car the first time, thinking I didn't need another car. I had the seller at $7,000 and I still decided to walk away.. Roughly seven months later, he still has it and we have been in contact sense.. he is set at $7,500. It's a fair price, but being a full-time college student, and already having a reliable car, I don't see the point right now, you know? It's a beautiful car, and one that will probably not be around for much longer. What are your thoughts?
Thanks for watching! To own these older turbo legacies I think a person has to have the money and time to invest in working on it. They can be finicky at best, and a royal pain at worst. They aren't hard to work on but it can get pricey.
Ugh I really want this stock 5 speed manual 2005 Legacy GT for a daily but I am an out of state grad student and I have none of my tools or jackstands with me. I eventually will need a toolbox but I'll have to buy one and that's gonna take some time and I need to study first and foremost Already I figure I'll need $1000 to get the Cobb accessport to do the Stage 1 tune and $2-300 to do the up pipe not to mention delete the banjo bolt filters. I might have to get a NA Legacy instead
Your line of thinking is correct, and nice to see you have your priorities straight. Study now, tinker with cars when you have more time. LGT is one of my favorite cars but they are finicky and temperamental sometimes. An NA Legacy might be the better choice for now. Thanks for watching!
I got absolutely screwed in the exact scenario this video is about. I bought an 09 Subaru in April of 2021. I foolishly didnt question it and went for it, then literally only a week after the purchase I started noticing a burning smell. If you havent already guessed, yeah it was the head gaskets.
Sorry to hear that! It's pretty much a maintenance item for these cars. The good news is once it's done with a proper metal head gasket, it'll be good for 100+ miles most of the time!
IIRC the Spec. B's had the same tune as the GT's, plus HG failures result mostly from neglect. We're halfway through '22 and I still want a damned wagon.
Want an almost Spec B wagon? 😂 2005 OBXT with a JDM Spec B driveline swap. Suspension has been converted as well. 6mt and R180 diff. Even have the Spec B rear trailing arms.

Subaru could have done a better job rust proofing, but they just didn't (money thing) The main reason these Subaru's disappear from the streets is rust. At one point it just gets too bad and it's not repairable anymore and just won't pass inspection. Too bad, because these are nice cars My 26 year old Volvo 940 has no rust anywhere and lives outside, and yes, salt is being used on the roads in winter here in NL
The turbo motors used the MLS head gaskets while the na motors didn't from the factory. . Which is why the NAs are so prone to failure. Turbo motors are known for ringland failure more than the head gaskets

@@drivechannelyt Subaru’s are a rarity in Belgium too. I’m owning my 2007 Legacy Touring Wagon for 12 years now. Bought it secondhand with only 55.000km. In all those years I saw just two like mine. I never had any engine trouble. He likes batteries, but that’s because I don’t drive it regularly. A few lightbulbs, a wheelbearing and a malfunctioning sensor. The exhaust needs to be replaced now after 150.000km’s. The very direct clutch and the gearbox takes getting used to it. But still very happy with the car.

If it's a dealership, make them do at least a compression test on it. Maybe even a leak down test.

Well all of the EJ problems i will avoid by going for 3.0R Spec B, lovely that they offered it with STI 6mt in europe, its still kind of rare.

Ugh I really want this stock 5 speed manual 2005 Legacy GT for a daily but I am an out of state grad student and I have none of my tools or jackstands with me. I eventually will need a toolbox but I'll have to buy one and that's gonna take some time and I need to study first and foremost
Already I figure I'll need $1000 to get the Cobb accessport to do the Stage 1 tune and $2-300 to do the up pipe not to mention delete the banjo bolt filters. I might have to get a NA Legacy instead
Your line of thinking is correct, and nice to see you have your priorities straight. Study now, tinker with cars when you have more time. LGT is one of my favorite cars but they are finicky and temperamental sometimes. An NA Legacy might be the better choice for now. Thanks for watching!
I got absolutely screwed in the exact scenario this video is about. I bought an 09 Subaru in April of 2021. I foolishly didnt question it and went for it, then literally only a week after the purchase I started noticing a burning smell. If you havent already guessed, yeah it was the head gaskets.
Sorry to hear that! It's pretty much a maintenance item for these cars. The good news is once it's done with a proper metal head gasket, it'll be good for 100+ miles most of the time!
IIRC the Spec. B's had the same tune as the GT's, plus HG failures result mostly from neglect. We're halfway through '22 and I still want a damned wagon.

2005 OBXT with a JDM Spec B driveline swap. Suspension has been converted as well. 6mt and R180 diff. Even have the Spec B rear trailing arms.

A 16 year old car does not have to rust! Subaru could have done a better job rust proofing, but they just didn't (money thing)
The main reason these Subaru's disappear from the streets is rust. At one point it just gets too bad and it's not repairable anymore and just won't pass inspection. Too bad, because these are nice cars
My 26 year old Volvo 940 has no rust anywhere and lives outside, and yes, salt is being used on the roads in winter here in NL

All of those gasket issues seem to be with the 2.5L N/A engine. Never heard any other EJ engines having this issue.
The turbo motors used the MLS head gaskets while the na motors didn't from the factory. . Which is why the NAs are so prone to failure. Turbo motors are known for ringland failure more than the head gaskets

It was put back to stock shortly after this. Did a couple logs with it on, seemed to only run rich between shifts. Always better safe than sorry in the end! Thanks for watching

I never had any engine trouble. He likes batteries, but that’s because I don’t drive it regularly. A few lightbulbs, a
wheelbearing and a malfunctioning sensor. The exhaust needs to be
replaced now after 150.000km’s. The very direct clutch and the gearbox takes getting used to it. But still very happy with the car.

And try get the manual transmission
Head gaskets are mostly an issue with the NA EJ 25. The turbo EJs used a MLS head gaskets so it's less common.

I own two and have spent a nauseating amount in just proper maintenance and modifications. And it would probably be astronomical amounts if I had all of the work done by a shop.
