About the tongue thing you're mentioning, she's always using it in hug me performances. It's just the tone she wants for it.

Normally so hyang gets emotional performing this song, she was also sitting (she usually stands when performing this) and she constantly gets sick because of pneumonia. Maybe that’s the reason for her tongue. She also had sung 2/3 more songs in this festival before this performance
This came over as very touching and vulnerable performance, looked very heartfelt. Almost everybody noted how genuinely emotional it was. It goes to show, that a 'perfect' performance doesn't mean best performance for an audience. Another little fact about So Hyang - she usually plans the production of her songs down to the nth degree and then will practice it endlessly. Nothing is by accident, unless she is unwell, which she quite often is sadly.
Hug me is always so emotional to me..the first time I heard it I really was crying hard. You get emotional and you don't even know what's she saying..

There was nothing wrong about that note in 7:30. She always sing that part same way with head voice. This is her arrangement.
I agree - I don’t think there was anything wrong either but her limbic response in that moment makes me think that something about it bothered her.

"Hug Me" is my 2nd most favorite from Sohyang, when it comes to emotive performance, especially her first "Hug Me" performance in the "King of Mask Singer". Although we couldn't see her face due to the mask, we could feel the emotions *infused* in her vocals. At some points I even felt my heart ache. 😭 She felt the song, and it was transmitted to me. 🤯 I've seen other videos of her concerts where Sohyang can be seen/heard visibly feeling this song when performing, even more than this particular stage you're reviewing.
(BTW, my *#1* favorite of Sohyang's emotive performance is "Where Are You". In case you wish to review it, please be aware that video "Where Are You" found in CZcams is incomplete. Interesting feedback. This is the only time I saw Sohyang sing this song sitting down. I would assume it's related to her physical condition. There were other times she sang O Holy Night on her knees but it reflected the lyrics of song and her devotion of her faith. I was a little surprised not to hear more about the impact of singing while sitting down from you. Nice video.
I think that gesture about removing her hair was somewhat similar to what she once did when she sang this song but in different part. Near the end, after that high note she touched her forhead and lowered her head as if she was in pain. I think that it's her way of expressing what's she feeling particularly in this performance because she said on several occasions that this song means a lot to her. I think that was the case here too.
Sohyang has a tear in her right eye at the end and rolls her head back until her eye absorbs it again before smiling at the audience! What a fast thinker! Oh Sohyang! 👌💘😎

Such a beautiful song and performance, wonderful analysis. I honestly can't believe no one else has been asking for Lara Fabian, her concerts From Lara With Love (Adagio, Je Suis Malade, You're Not From Here, Caruso, Broken Vow) and Mademoiselle Zhivago (with Igor Krutoy and includes the songs Dimash covered- Mademoiselle Hyde, Vocalise/Ascolta La Voce, and her cover of Love is Like a Dream) are both master classes. Dimash learned how to emote from her, I often see her coming through when he performs.
A very underrated song that most people do not recommend enough if ever is Voir Un Ami Pleure in her En Toute Intime concert! I think it would be best to react after seeing one of her more popular performances to see the kind of artist she is.

Great analysis, as usual Marc--so informative. Watch her performance (behind a mask!) of "hug Me," on the Korean show, "Masked Singer," with English subtitles (link provided below, for your convenience). (You'll see one of the male Korean panelists recognize the intro and announce, to someone nearby, "Oh no, it's Hug Me!" By this time in the contest, they'd already been previously reduced to tears several times, by her voice alone, and dreaded what she was going to do to them with this song!) The song is about a spurned lover, desperately pleading with her now cold, devoid-of-any-remaining-love ex-lover, to try again--but she's struggling to remain calm, while alternately resentful of his splitting. Yet, still so in love that she admits she's stripped of any self-esteem and is reduced to begging, ending her plea with a heart-rending "Please, just Hug Me." In an interview, Sohyang has admitted this is one of the hardest songs for her to get through and avoid breaking the "4th wall", every single time she sings it. It evokes such emotion in her that she usually just winds up almost yelling her character's desperation (thus the brighter, razor-edged mix notes) and the frustration of the encounter. In the numerous performances of this song I've seen, she never strays from the character's almost-sobbing plea for reconciliation--consistently, the same timbre changes at every "building point" in the song. Hope this helps provide a little insight into what she was singing. Watch this performance, for voice-only emotional manipulation! Masterpiece! About what you’re saying about the tongue, you can find it ONLY in her Hug Me performances. It’s just the tone she wants. She’s extremely versatile

I watched a lot of So Hyang, and i think something was going on during this concert, she seemed a bit unwell and more emotional than usual. Hence her having to sit during this performance. I have never seen her sit to sing before this.

Can I give you my opinion? My story behind this performance is what I was feeling while she was singing it. I feel the lyrics of the song got to her, she feels like a person who is feeling loneliness and is desperate for a hug, her face while performing the last bridge looked like she was trying hard to hold back tears. Please look for the lyrics in English Hug Me was written by Jeong Jun Il. Awesome reaction Doctor Mark, another amazing Wednesday with SoHyang reaction.

Please react to her You Raise Me Up performance on Immortal Songs 2018. She had pneumonia days before the performance and was advised to NOT SING in Immortal Songs that day. But she still sang, and gave a technically proficient and powerful performance even though sick.

I've realised there's some confusion about her health in the comments because I see some people saying some stuff about her not having pneunomia (I'm not referring to this performance, just in general). I've seen a video that was released yesterday. It was an interview back in the middle of 2018 when she went to vietnam and when a fan asked her about her health she said she gets pneunomia. She literally used word pneunomia so I think there shouldn't be any confusion about that topic anymore.
I think her Heavenly hair was misplaced. She delivered this the same as she did originally.

2018 was a tough year healthwise. Her performance in May 2018 of You Raise Me Up was against doctors orders having been advised to not even talk let alone deliver that performance. Pneumonia has been a recurring thing since her cancer battle.. This was an amazing performance sitting down. As far as her tongue, if it was different it's because she wanted it to be.. She is an angel.. Watch her perform same song on King of Masked Singer for comparison..
Sohyang has been sick on and off for years now and I believe she was sick too during that performance. When she's sick the strain starts creeping in in her upper register, so she has to slightly-moderately-desperately strain the notes out. I've seen many of Sohyang's live performances where it was clear she was very sick and had blocked vocal cords. She definitely wasn't in a good health condition in that performance but being Sohyang, she didn't lip sync, no backing tracks. She gave it all despite her sickness.
When she was in bad health, I heard her sing this song LIVE at her concert. She had, till now, chronic pneumonia but as she started singing, I couldn't find any trivial flaws from her. She might have some difficulties in performing those songs difficult to sing, but her powerful and sweet voice canceled out all the hard-to-notice problems.

Rosannasfriend It doesn’t all the time. She only does this on her Hug Me performances, not with Breathe, You Raise Me Up, or her other emotional performances
[ I looked at her eyes they where dark like she was ill but she still was great
she has had some extraordinary health issues (cancer) in her lifetime and has been known to perform when sick with pneumonia (against the advice of her doctor). I personally think she looks extremely tired here. The fact the she is sitting through this entire performance makes me think its because she is not feeling at all well and makes me rather concerned for her though she still does an outstanding job.
Hi Marc! Love your videos and the varied approach you take, it's all fascinating. I never had chance to do voice lessons when I was younger and I'm recovering from surgeries now so I've been singing tons because I have so much empty time. My chest voice sounds really pop/rock ish but my head voice sounds so choir esque that I can't really use it very well in full songs. So I tend to find I have to stick with either or except for occasional notes. When I was at school I had to sing with either the tenors or the sopranos because altos were singing around where my switch is and my voice always popped out the texture too much if I sung with them. I'd never figured out my range before and I used an app called "vocalise" to check it and its b2-d6 but is hoping to be a little more consistent out of reach with such disparate sounds? No worries if you can't respond, hope you have a lovely day and the question isn't too vague. Take care Dr. :)
I'm sure you're getting lots of requests, but if you're interested you should check out Kihyun singing Y si fuera ella and maybe compare it to jonghyun's, and point out like cool technical differences and show how two people can sing the same song differently

Sohyang has a completely unique, God-given, voice which she has honed to a laser-like accuracy. She is flawless. Picking at her technique is insulting. You CANNOT teach anyone to sing like Sohyang.

I think Sohyang & Hyorin from Sistar are the top 2 female vocalists in South Korea. Sohyang's technic is amazing! Although, she can make some unflattering faces at times.

@@dulanjala she is sick often due to Hepatitis B virus. She was treated preemptively for Uterine cancer after discovering Uterine Myoma in 2000. They are not related. Hepatitis B virus has weakened her immune system and weakened her liver and made her vulnerable. 🤷🏽♀️

This performance, I believe, was done right after she was recovering from her illness. She had to suspend her TV appearances and singing performance due to her physical condition for some months. You can see it in her face even with the heavy make-up she has on...and the same reason she's sitting down which is very uncharacteristic of Sohyang.

Actually you have to react a whole performance of Elyxion (EXO 4th Concert Tour)😂because they're more focusing on vocal performance rather than extraordinary perfomance like in Exordium ( EXO 3rd Concert Tour). She didn't have pneunomia but she said she was sick at that time I believe.
She's always "sick," but the truth is that you can find a lot of issues like this if you just watch her fan cams or know what you're listening for. She's great, but not flawless. But that's okay. No one's without flaws--it's just that people shouldn't prop her up so high. Its an impossible standard to meet.

As someone who genuinely loves Sohyang, I'm so sick of her being regarded as some perfect being.
Whenever there's any hint of weakness in her voice, all the comments are like "oh, she almost died before this performance, her doctor said she had 5 minutes left to live but she went on stage anyway".
Come on guys, she has flaws like anyone...it doesn't detract from the fact that she's one of the greatest vocalists alive imo.

You may be a stage director, but the PHENOMENAL So Hyang is not an actress.
Therefore, what you stated in the beginning, about why she has her eyes in a certain position, is to play to the balcony, doesn't make sense. She does what's in her heart and soul. You can't even see a balcony.
So Hyang is that rare artist who can convey the meaning/message of a song with her eyes and voice, because she not only hears the music, she feels the music. In my never to be humble opinion, you lose all credibility,when you interpret whether a note was intentional or a mistake. Unless you wrote the arrangement, you don't have the credentials to interpret the meaning of it. You need to stop reacting to So Hyang as if she is an actress performing a song in a Broadway musical. It appears to me, you just want to comment for no reason.

Yeah, I don't like to watch this performance. She was not in top form, for whatever reason. Having watched her rendition of this song in the "King of Mask Singer" countless times, having recognized its faultless brilliance, it's hard to watch this performance. It's just not up to her nearly unparalleled standards, and I don't like to think that there may be viewers out there thinking that this is all she can do.

It's not that often tho. I've heard some of tongue tension in performances when she was really sick but when she's not she only chose to sing like that in hug me performances. Literally every hug me performance is sung like that, meaning it's intentional.
