  • I've owned my $4,000.00 honda for about 7 years now and get questions on why I still drive it or "when are you going to get a newer car." So here are the real reasons Why I drive a beater car and why you should too. Enjoy

I do doordash and one time I delivered groceries to this million dollar home, it was beautiful but in the driveway there was two old cars. One 2002 Buick and one old Cadillac. A old lady answered the door and I complimented her on the home and she told me her and her husband bought the home 7 years ago. I joked around and said "with this nice home you have some nice cars too", and she told me they bought those cars when they were new and kept them since. After I talked with her for a bit she told me that Buick has over 370k miles and I didnt believe her until she showed me the gauge and it started like it was brand new, I ended up leaving that house with a whole new perspective on life.

2008 Galaxy Grey FA5. Bought in 2018 in Texas at 107k. Currently living in Ohio, and just hit 180k this weekend. Clear coat was shot when I bought it, looks horrible now. Accidentally backed into my Jeep, has a silver base model trunk right now. Did bolt ons and hondata at 140k. Only time the car has let me down was when the starter died around 160k. Besides regular oil changes, I did new Exedy clutch, hybrid racing CMC, spark plugs, coolant, valve adjustment and more around 145k. About to do a suspension refresh. Car starts right up every time, still gets 28mpg average around backroads, and is FUN to drive. Insurance is roughly $60 a month for a 25 year old. And it’s PAID OFF. I couldn’t imagine spending money on a new car, anything else would feel like a downgrade and I would spend way more money on payments, insurance and maintenance. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. This car is a sign of wealth and happiness through being frugal and finding enjoyment in something simple. Very well put about putting money into investments instead Gerb. 8th gen owners know what life is about!!!

Its an absolutely amaizng machine and i hope that i can afford one by the time i get my financial life in place. In the American landscape, where roads wind and dreams converge, there exists a humble chariot known as the beater car. Its weathered exterior tells tales of countless journeys, while its steadfast spirit whispers of resilience. Like a seasoned traveler, it navigates the highways of life with grace, embracing each scratch and dent as a mark of character. With simplicity in its veins and freedom in its heart, the beater car offers a sanctuary from the pressures of modernity, where the cost of ownership is measured not in dollars, but in the memories forged along the way.

My bone stock 2008 Si is BY FAR the most reliable car I have ever had. 115,000 recently had to put in a couple O2 sensors, had I known they get old before failure I would have proactively done them both. Got the CEL and ended up swapping both, Rock Auto $200 parts and a little trial and error self-diagnostics.
2 front pad slaps, repainted rain gutter trim, headlight sand and buff every year now, just routine maintenance.
I even still have original clutch, hahahahahaha Bought at 32,000 around 2011 from adult owner, and I'm old enough that the uppity kids at the movie box office give me senior rate sometimes and I said nothing.
I 100% agree on a used car purchase, this fun little go-cart is the LAST thing some people expect I would own, but from a pragmatic standpoint, my cost per year to have transportation when I'm not on the road flying for a living is DIRT cheap.
    Couple things,
-Depending on the State, no tax on private party sales.
    - You probably know it, and milage may be way too high, but I got a letter a few years back about power steering service campaign. Mine has been fine, but who knows, maybe you have a good will option fir that from HONDA
Best new years wishes to you man !!!!

@@TheGerbsteve Center console connection was easy from underneath did not need to do anything inside or remove anything underside but sensor, just make sure you don't dislodge the main harness bracket when disconnecting sensor. It holds on in a way that supports pushing new connector in. You can feel it click. That body grommet is fine, but the Denso does not have the frame hanger grommets, so I improvised. To do it over again I would have bought the NTK as that is what was stock for the downstream and has frame grommets. (Did not know as I had not removed it prior to ordering, I lazily stayed Denso, and did not notice Rock Auto OE note for NTK till later.
Initially P2A00 had me looking at Upstream, code returned. So digging around I found a South Main Auto video for a Nissan discussing the downstream erroneously throwing that upstream code but downstream provably failed. .
By then I had returned the first Upstream Denso to Amazon. (In the end it was probably fine, but seller did not offer any response on my questions before returning as to possibility it was new defective, he just said send it back , so I did)
Of the 4 OBDS scan tools, all cheap auto store or friends, one did show downstream code on one scan but not the others after CEL returned.
So I just got on Rock Auto bought both, 40 minutes to swap both and light never returned.
I learned that they do age on the way to "failure" (to meet a response time parameter.
If I understood that better before this event I would have replaced as a maintenance item around 70-80K, 2 tanks after change were 29.9 MPG up from 28.8 running average before. We'll see if that continues, if so replacing as routine would have paid for itself.
      From my maintenance records file:
-* Previous replaced B1S1 with Denso from Amazon, code returned, different scan tool also showed B1S2 code, so just ordered both from Rock Auto, returned Amazon just in case)
Original factory showed HO2S S2 at .71V idle (operating temp) 4000RPM let off, went to 0V and returned to .67 in 12 seconds
After replacing both. same test HO2S S2 similar .71 voltage but voltage recovery in 4-6 seconds,
After replacement idle catalyst temp went from 609 to 685 , unsure if that would change with different ambient temp, previous ambient unknown, just notes from earlier diagnosis.
all other values similar before and after -*

Just ordered replacement Factory replica rims from "wheelership" online, They seem reputable, new years code and $529 to my door, My factory are usual curb rash, little paint peel and finish flaws, But I have new tires to mount and new TPMS sensors (Stock lasted a LOOONG time) I just decided to buy new rims for about the same as refinishing mine would have cost in my time or pay someone. My paint is basically perfect, so it compliments.
Now I just gotta see if I can get and $ out of old ones, Don't need the money, but what do I need with barely legal tires on spare rims? I don't need to drive when it snows, so no need for snow set. Cheers

I still have my 06 SI but I also bought a 08 350Z manual sports car that I bought for 4 grand , I got tired of seeing the other plain jane honda civics around town and the only difference between their car and mine was the Si badges from a visual standpoint, I wanted a car that stood out more and had more power, was RWD and had torque, the Z really fit that role for me. I've been doing all of the work on it myself, I just recently ripped the engine apart down to the timing and replaced the oil galleries. At the end of the day the honda is more practical with the back seats and stuff but it's not the more fun car to drive. And with the insurance prices both cars at this point in time are about the same to insure since I'm in my mid 30s now. So really its just a matter of what car you want to own. I think the Z is more fun and more of a drivers car, especially since the transmission and shifter are connected directly to your hand, no shift cables, but the shifting fork is directly connected to your hand and when you shift gears you can feel the engine through your hand, very good driving connection to the car IMO!

These cars are not beaters friend. Just needs a refresh thats all.
The tradeoff of no car payment and an older performance honda is yes they are reliable but you will pay more on parts and repairs being out of warranty.
I havent had alot go wrong on me but thats because ive pre emptively repaired and replaced ALOT of parts.
Like you said it has been fun because its never left me stranded all of the problems ive had have been manageable. I will never sell this car. 5 to 10k will never be enough to part ways and it doesnt cost that much to keep on the road now that ive restored the car.

I never want to buy a new car. I find it hardly so. There could be an exception, but the market right now doesn’t have it at this time. And even if it did, I would NOT give up my car.
I have followed you since your first days on your channel, you were the guy I looked to and that’s when I also bought a Civic Si sedan 2008. Is not that your car is a beater, brother, is an icon.
    The platform matters
Also I find it luxurious when you can pay so much less for insurance in car like these and even less frequent stops at the gas pump. This also carries on your story, and I definitely wouldn’t have noticed you in the beginning if it wasn’t for the car you have. So whatever you do, don’t get rid of it. Your car is an extension of your character. Please drive safe.

i don't drive a beater. I drive a leaner. A car to lean on for life while other cars come and go. A beater is your burner car, not your base car. In my case, I own a base car -- an indestructible Toyota which I do take indeed take care of -- because it allows me any assortment of 2nd hand sports cars as a 2nd car. but my point is it's the sport cars which get beat up so they're "beaters", whereas the uninteresting but well maintained and indestructible Toyota Yaris is my lifelong fallback.

I am doubting that this is true especially since it was a rear main seal leak among others. I was told to replace the timing chain. I got this car because a belt has to be replaced and a chain doesn't. Do you know if these cars still need valve adjustments? They also said I had a leak around the valve cover. One last question, how did changing the wheels work out as far as the ride goes? I had a CRX before and when I changed the wheels it never ran right again until I put the stock back on. Thank you.

Took my chance and bought a 07’ rav4 with high miles for $2,000. Feels good to own stuff outright. I do get why people buy new though, there are some benefits, but the money you spend on a vehicle should depend on the funds that you have in your bank account. If you cannot afford to buy it outright or have money for the full cost of the vehicle, don’t buy it.
