The Shocking Truth About Adult Tricycles vs. Two-Wheel Bikes Revealed : Trike Information to Know

  • A lot of us learn to ride two wheel bicycles at a very young age and most of our tricycle experience comes when we are so little that we can't even remember what it felt like. Then when we get to be an adult and we turn to a tricycle instead of a two wheel bike we don't realize how different it is to ride a tricycle versus a two wheel bike. A lot of riders get onto a trike as an adult for the first time and they are confused on why the steering is different. Because most people had been riding a two wheel bike for many years their brains become trained on how to steer and operate a two wheel bike. Once they get on to a tricycle their brains expectation is that it will function just like a two wheel bike, and surprise, they don't. But that doesn't mean something is wrong with the tricycle, it just means you'll need to spend a little time getting used to how a tricycle turns and steers. Trust me, even if you don't get it within the first few minutes, it will come. Spend some time in a parking lot riding your tricycle and getting comfortable with how it functions. Before you know it riding a tricycle will come just as natural as two wheel bike riding did. Whether as an adult or senior you choose a two wheel bike or 3 wheel bike, getting out and keeping your body moving is the most important part.

Wonder if a fall would be worse tipping over a trike or a bike.

I have a balance issue, and people suggested a trike as a possible solution, so off to Craigslist for a used trike. On my test ride, I experienced the ssame issues. The trike seemed uncontrollable, I drove into the curb, couldn't drive in a straight line, so I said 'No, thanks!' I wished I'd seen this video before I saw the trike advertisment. Thanks for posting this video!

I have not ridden a bike since 2011 or even before then. But I had a stroke in 2018 & it affected my balance a lot. I wanted to start riding again but I could barely do it. I had a regular bike 3 speed before but this one was a 15 speed. Very scary that day. So am working on strengthening exercises so I can hopefully ride again. It was recommended by the PT specialist to practice on a stationary exercise bike for now then go to a regular bike. I still cannot get my feet going fast enough together to pedal a bike. It is like I have to start all over like a child. But I will get it done

What would cause a 3 wheeled bike to be crazy hard to pedal ?

What would have been more helpful would have been seeing you demonstrate riding the darn thing. Showing how to take a turn and shifting.

Personally, I don't think we should "teach" children to ride on tricycles for the reasons given in this video. It's been my experience, limited as it is, that children who rode tricycles first then switched to 2-wheeled bikes depended on/required training wheels longer and/or fell more often. 2-wheeled bikes with training wheels are the way to go, leave the tricycles for aging adults.
