His name was or is Sargeras. He was a Titan who went bad. When his fellow Titans tried to pull him away from Azeroth, he stabbed the planet with his sword. It is the belief that he was trying to kill or corrupt the world soul of Azeroth. She is now calling out to the world's inhabitants for some reason we are not quite sure of just yet, but we got a pretty good idea. Especially now.

i cannot for the life of me understand why some people are giving Anduin so much shit, calling him a baby and stuff. Like how would you expect someone who went through what he did in SL to act like after he had finally broke free?
Not only that. Anduin's life was shit since very early. Always forced to be the voice of reason as a little kid in the middle of huge conflicts, grew with his father MIA for years, and when henfinally returns, he dies a bunch of years later. He is forced to sit at the throne of a huge alliance of races at ~14 years old, instantly dragged around more huge wars and cataclysms, looking his people die in a conflict he didn't want, the pressure of almost losing it and failing his people... And then the mental rape and forced to do war crimes in SL. No wonder the man is broken. Me, you and everyone of those who call him baby would be in our bed curled into a ball if that were us.
@@QueenLuxAeterna Totally agree on all of that. My little brother was a Marine in the 1980s. He saw some serious stuff and he's got PTSD. I recognized Anduin did as well the first time I saw his eyes, even before he flipped out on the light reference. The man has a lot of stuff to get through and is going back to fight, struggling to find his footing without the light he has clung to and used when needed. I'm going to see how they play that out. And Anduin is my favorite, always has been (and I would LOVE to see him and Wrathion get back to their friendship again).
Not just what he want through in Shadowlands. The war he had to fight in BFA, watching his soldiers die before him. Losing his father in Legion. He's lived a very very traumatic life.
alot of people dont want or cant emphetize and just want a war game and pew pew nubs.
Not just SL, the dude been getting more and more trauma ever sense he was a kid, SL however went on to becoming the icing on the cake
Anduin has always been the human figure in WoW, and it is made even more evidently so in this cinematic, with him suffering PTSD, the sheer fear and powerlessness in that same stance that Arthas took at the start of WotLK... there is just so much depth here. I only wish they could make a full-feature movie like this...
Oh and Chris Metzan announced the next 3 Expansion... Not just War Within... but 2 more expansions after it. the Worldsoul Saga :D
Did you catch the reference to Saurfang? That whole "You don't know what I've seen, what I've done" is directly out of the Lost Honor cinematic between Saurfang and Anduin in the Stormwind jail. That's how tight this was, Anduin's stance reminds of Arthas, it's just all brilliant.

The cgi is insane, Anduin looks just like a real person, and the sword is finally dealt with, Im tired of people complaining about it

No, that's the beauty of this quality of detail, it's NOT like a real person.
It's different and that's good.
We don't want CGI to look real, we need to see a difference.

anyone else notice the reflection of the sword in Anduin's eyes?
So a little backstory Sargeras is one of the titans turned completely evil. At the end of legion we defeat his avatar ( in an attempt to prevent him from manifesting fully) in one of the raids, and after doing so the titans basically come rip him from the planet as he is being transported into his now prison he uses his last moments of freedom to plunge his massive sword into the world which is what caused azerite (the blood of the world). This basically kicked off the fight for azerite between the horde alliance and everything in-between. So we can take the giant sword as sargeras basically trying to destroy or wound the world with the hopes of it dieing (his plan had two outcomes corrupt the world soul and the titan inside respectively or attempt to destroy it), because all titans were born from the souls of worlds usually remaining dormant for unknow lengths of time. So for all intensive purposes this expansion could easily have just taken place right after legion and it would have been a perfect narrative arc that made sense, as not dealing with the massive giant sword sticking out of the world for many many years, time skip is evident by the fact that thrall and anduin both are much older in this cinematic.
If i messed anything up feel free to correct me, its been a while since I read up on lore about these characters as shadowlands murdered the logical story telling of an already jumbled mess.

Yeah the storytelling in BFA was dope for the zones especially the drustvar imo the over arching lacked quite a bit in both BFA & shadowlands (personally didn’t love shadowlands) dragonflight has been so much fun, haven’t gotten into the story of DF like I did BFA though sadly but the game itself is so fun, so with all these changes and what’s to come with a planned storyline already is so exciting
People keep saying "is this real or CGI" which I guess is the acronym casual movie-goers know. And it does mean Computer Generated Imagery which could fit here. But I think lots of people are thinking of motion captured performances when they use/hear the word. This is all manually animated!
No mocap... hand animated 3d character based on previous Anduin models. They did use a few human preview models as reference material.

Josh Keaton, the voice actor for Anduin, said that he didn't do any mo-cap just video recordings.
I know for the BfA cinematic they had an actor do mo-cap for Anduin and Anduin actually ended up looking a lot like him. Not sure if they used him again or not for this one, tho.
maybe the person they used to mocap anduin is the same dude they used for male V in the cyberpunk trailers, they look very similar imo
This is all 100% CGI. Awesome work. Anduin has been rendered very well, looks real, and the PTSD he's showing is very, very well done. The guy who was doing this back in the day, Chris Metzen, has come back to Blizzard and he's the guy doing all of this. It's going to be awesome!!! If you didn't see what Chris did at Blizzcon in announcing this expansion (and setting up that trailer), you NEED to go back and see it. Seriously. I've played since 2008 (Burning Crusade) and this is the most excited I've been about an expansion. The production ramp up, the things they're bringing into the game (mechanics and organization) and the story arc that they're going to build is just magnificently awesome.
Not sure you can call it CGI. But there is no motion capture at least. It's manually animated.
Anduin looks like the guy that plays Oliver Queen in Arrow.... or Charlie Hunnam lmao

Sargeras (Old titan) was trying to stab world soul because he's afraid it will be corrupted by the void. He's not died he's imprisoned with Illidan watching over him.
