WE ARE 5 DAYS AWAY FROM ANIMAL CROSSING NEW HORIZONS 🥳 ARE YOU EXCITED?
Anyway, putting the HYPE aside for a minute, today we take a look at 5 things you should know, BEFORE choosing your Island Map.
Despite having the ability to terraform our New Horizons Island, there are a few features that you should bear in mind, before settling on a Map in order to avoid disappointment later on in the game.
The most obvious is the position of the docks and the secret beaches in Animal Crossing New Horizons, but have you thought about the River exits?

This perfect map situation is ridiculous. Everyone's waited for YEARS to play this amazing game. But some people will waste possibly hours to get the "perfect" map. Pull up your big-boy pants, suck it up and work with what you got. Personally, I'm going to pick the one of the original four produced and enjoy my game.

I'm literally gonna be stuck at the start for ages, I keep changing my mind on my island name, though I do have an idea of what island I want.
Also, I completely forgot about the fruit... so now I gotta think about that.
My philosophy for fruits: It doesn't matter what i get! Some people might want one specific fruit as their native fruit but still want at every type of fruit in their town, so if you're going to have everything, what does it matter? Just wait until you get the fruits and hide all the ones you didn't want so nobody has to see them but you still have them available! Then just take the fruits you think look nice and spread them around everywhere and it's like even though it wasn't your native fruit, you still have it around. I like to do this because normally I only keep perfect trees of my native fruit and, for example, while peaches are my favorite fruit, I like their regular appearance more than the perfect appearance so it's better for me if they're not my native fruit. Go create a Japanise Nintendo Account, and activate the digital purchase of New Horizions a few hours earlier.
Other distractions is check out the SMILE BASIC 4 demo on the Japanise e-shop.
You get to program and even download other people's programs *(but limited to one every 8 hours. You can't save your own programs either Because it is a demo, also your total file size is 32MB so you can't go too crazy making custom sprites and 3D models. [But you can bypass the lack of SAVE fuctions in the demo by the use of the SAVEV command and save the code as text. And use the LOADV command to load it back up.]! There is now an English section in the help, and you'll have early Access to it before it gets fully released in English.)
SMILE BASIC 4, will likely be announced in the next Nintendo Direct.
In new leaf I didn't even know you could pick a map and was scared of offending Rover so I went along with the first map he offered me. I get the feeling something similar will happen here because I'm already overthinking what I should do.

I got the game in 2016 and picked a random one, then a couple years later, the campground shows up DIRECTLY behind a long pond at the edge of the cliff, making it annoying to go there. I hope I don't have such bad luck in this game lol.

@@spaghetie2 My retail was as far away as physically possible from the dock so you're not the only one with bad luck XD. I wept many tears when I found out the best way to get money is to sell fish/bugs from the island.

People will reset many times for a great map layout and for their favorite fruit... Some will reset for starter villagers or airport/plane colors. Great video Mayor Mori!

I'm looking for dual southern exits I think. I want to separate my island into three distrcts with the river separating them. A residential district with the majority of the homes and resident services, the arts distract with the museum and cafe, and the shopping district with Nookling's and Able Sisters.

Tip from me: never, EVER plant flowers without blocking them off, they can breed and overgrow and make a giant mess that will be impossible to clean up
Yeah, they really do overgrow. I wish picking them were as easy as it was in New Leaf.
I've found that you can use the paving tool to place a clear custom design on the ground around the flowers. It keeps them from spreading without using fences or visible paths.

The “land outlet” you’ve mentioned is called a peninsula.
its not disconnected from the land enough to be a penninsula, which would be surrounded by water on 3 sides. Its more like a cape, just a strange variation on the coastline, and surronded by water on 2.
It's a headland lol. Talked about it in geology today

I feel weird trying to civilize the island too much, like, the whole point is a tropical getaway on a deserted island, so in my mind that means just leaving everything mostly as it is.
Of course, planning out where to put fruit trees and new villager homes is going to be a pain but oh well. I just pick out the spots I think look nice and go from there. I picked the island at 1:57 since there's a big strip of land on the right and I can still have plants and stuff on the left side.

I'm honest, I don't think I'll reset the game or think much about the map, I get. I will be WAY to excited to finally start playing! I'll pick my favourite out of the first ones and just make something amazing out of it
I would say the most important two factors is getting South + East and South + West water areas. Not only is this better if planning to huddle all houses and shops together, but this allows for a larger early game area prior to being able to jump rivers. The second most important factor is to have residence services as close to the airport as possible. Given that it is open 24/7 and has most of the important features in the game, it will be used more than any other building. It is likely to be used a lot in coordination with the airport, so having it both near the bottom and near the airport is most optimal.
One other not as important thing to consider is starting fruit. This shouldn't make or break a good layout, but the fruit that shows on passport is not changeable.
Tacet the Terror: what should I know about the fruit?
@@quentin7283 Well, starting fruit doesn't matter much. Ironically, it is actually optimal to have your favorite fruit NOT be the one on your passport. The reason for this is fruit that is not native to your island will sell for more. So if you want an island of peaches, it is technically better to start with any fruit that isn't peaches, trade for a peach via online or get one from an island for 2,000 nook miles, then replace your island population with that newly obtained fruit.
Some people just want a specific fruit showing on their passport. The fruit that shows there cannot be changed and it is showed to everyone any time they see your passport profile page.
Tacet the Terror Most important thing is getting river exits you want. Doesn’t matter whether it’s double south or not.
The town hall will always be in the same couple of rows on the grid. It will always be on the bottom portion of the map near the airport.
Fruit selection is pretty important not just because the card, but Perfect Fruit. You want the native fruit that has the perfect fruit you like the most.

Meanwhile,, I chose mine in 20 seconds because of the cute heart shaped pond
I'm gonna try for an island with a double-south river exit, with the seaport and community center/town hall in the middle. Then, I'm going to split my island right down the middle, and put all my shops/commercial stuff on one side, with a river running through it, and put all the houses/residential on the other with its own river. Then I'll color code and decorate them, so it feels like you're walking into the big city from the suburbs, to shop! I'm excited, lol.

Can someone sum this up? I tried to watch, but for whatever reason, I’m having a hard time absorbing it
1. You can't change where you rivers meets the ocean, so pick carefully. There's two exits and you can't change them like you can change the rest of the environment.
2. The town hall/resident service centre is possibly unable to be moved too.
3. Peninsulas (bits of grass that continue out into the ocean) can't be customised either.
4. We can make layered towns now, building cliffs on top of cliffs. Apparently there's some 3rd cliff (fourth layer up) that aren't accessible.
5. The dock (and the rocks) aren't movable.
Can alter: rivers, ponds, cliffs, shops, houses
Cannot alter: town square, dock, airport, river mouths, beach rocks, peninsulas.
Breanna Galea you can move the rocks there are 6 if you destroy it with a shovel it will spawn somewhere different if you was a Specific spot you have to put mannikins everywhere so the rock has no choice but to spawn

I was thinking so too so you could use the rivers as divisions for the towns layout. Like villagers live in one 3rd of the map. Shopping district in another 3rd. Fruits and harvestables in the other third...

Wow, the first one really safed my life😅 I'm planing to form a great palm in the middle of my island (inspired by the one in Dubai) and for this project it's important to have the south exit of the river nearly in the middle and not at one of the edges, thank you so much🙌

I want my map to have a west and south exit for rivers and townhall a bit lower, so I can have a pretty garden with ponds above it. I want the grassy pier near the town hall, at the lower part of the map, so the lighthouse can be a part of the "town area". I saw a picture with loads of options with the map layout, don't know if you saw it, but I want to get map nr1 or nr20. Got a beautiful island design ready and I cannot wait to start!😍

Aaaaa I’m so excited!! These last days are going to feel like the longest days, I think I want to choose a south-south river and split from the middle later on that way the front is dedicated to the shops and buildings. I want villagers to be to the north-west and then I want pure nature with occasional benches or other cool things to be on the noth-east section of the map!

Thanks for making the video, it was a help. Thankfully I don't think the details will bother me much (if at all) but it's nice to know everything when starting. I just got my switch lite and game today (early b-day gift) and I'm SO EXCITED. I was totally grinning ear to ear when I took it out of the box.

South-South rivers (equidistant from the edges), central-ish town hall, central private island. Anything other than that I can work around. I love symmetry so designing my entire island around things being symmetrical sounds perfect for me
Also my name for the Island will be Inset Island. Not only a reference to Outset Island from Wind Waker, but the fact I'll be doing the exact opposite of Wind Waker's starting island, ergo never leaving it XD

my map plan:
All the facilities will at the bottom, near south-east almost next to the airport, so it's like a town centre! there'll be 2-3 neighborhoods, each far apart, with 3-4 houses in each. (1. One north-west, one south-west and one north-east) A cute campground / relaxing area will be on one large cliff, with benches, etc etc. there will be a large lake on the north-east, and in between the neighbourhoods there'll be long paths with trees on the side! the beach will have like a sort of tiki hut, and the name will be either Coral Island, Turtle Island or Blossom Island!

The "Land Outlets" as you call them are called peninsulas, I believe.
Caleb Evans thank you from Michigan, where we are literally made up of a upper peninsula and lower peninsula. Although “land outlets” may be just as accurate for such a small example.
I’m going with West and South, but western based. I’m trying to set up a port town of sorts on the right side of the map.
Map! lol Thanks for posting these vids. They're really helpful. I got my ACNH this past January and I thoroughly enjoy it. I play it everyday. However I need to learn how to do terraforming and lay down pathways though; that'll really help my island take shape.

Okay, this means that my ideal island will have: one water exit to the south, the other to the lower middle of the east side, the nook tent lower-central or lower-eastern part of the map (ideally a couple of squares below the east water exit), grassy island to just slightly below mid-western part of the map, I don't care much about the position of the rocks or the private beach, but I would prefer an eastern dock

I'm not worried about any restrictions, I don't have grand terraforming plans, but I am looking forward to choosing my MAP and planning my town around it. I think both rivers draining to the South could be cool, but who knows! I can't wait to get my hands on it, and get started! We're almost there, everyone!
